From 1975 to 1976, 200,000 Portuguese "retornados" immigrated to the United States and another 20,000 to Canada from the former Portuguese colonies of Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea. The whole independence process was tragic since it had an adverse effect on the Portuguese of both Caucasian and African descent.
It is a well known fact that more Portuguese immigrated in the post Carnation Revolution era than under the New State dictatorship.
Don't quit! Learn how to speak Portuguese and spread the language over there! How I am proud to be Portuguese! To see my people spread on the 4 corners of the world. Keep the tradition alive over there. The great people of Portugal is counting on you!
I arrived in 95 and have seen Portuguese culture disappear little by little. Those who have seen how Ferry st in Newark has changed and how many Portuguese businesses in CA, NJ, NY and MA closed know what I'm talking about. Our heritage is being kept alive only because of the hard work of people at Portuguese Halls and institutions in several cities across the country. Unfortunately many have let the host nation absorb them completely and have forgotten where they come from.
I find it incredible how young children are being taught our wonderful Azorean culture through dance, dress and music at the Rancho do Clube Potugues, Cranston, RI.
At one time, many years ago, San Jose, CA was vibrant with a huge Portuguese community; today, sad to say, it is nearly dead.
I salute Rancho do Clube Potugues, Mr. Jorge Cabral and all that guide, encourage, and teach our children, our future our Azoren culture.
Beautiful :)
