No computer aided special effects back then (other than blue screen.) Real cars, and stunt performers. Obviously, miniatures used for the "falling form the sky" scene. Even a better stunt coordinated car scene in the movie was the chase through the mall. That was a real mall in the Chicagoland area which was used (the mall was scheduled to be torn down, thus the location department negotiated a deal to use it.) The talent of production stunt performers have long been overlooked and underrated.

It was a great coincidence that allowed a great scene to be made. My dad was actually in a building across from the bank center when they were filming. He saw the helicopters and the SWAT members rapeling down the side of the building.
