My Theory? This style use to be the thing for underground rockers to wear. Kind of party of the "I just woke up and came here" look. Sonic the haircut is a cultural response to the mullet. Women everywhere hated the mullet SO MUCH that they decided to create the exact opposite, aggressively dye it, and make it pretty much permanently spiked with products.
An incredible number of women i know have described the Sonic as "funky" or "young", which might be part of the reason it won't die, but i have no real explanation for that.

Well, laides. I have the peice of information you so long for... It started way back in... 2003. A massive stink bomb was created, but this stink bomb was designed to blow up AND fill a 100 mile radius with the stench of burnt pubes and rotten eggs. One young womans life was forever changed. She was walking to the store and just happened to stand directly in front of the bomb in the time it went off. The back of her hair was blown into a thousand different directions... creating... the haircut!

recently, in the news, somewhere out there, ran a story on the guy that gave her that haircut. he designed it on his own. ...i think the guy was mad at her. ..possibly a friend of her husband, who was trying to humiliate her, like he was humiliated on that show.

I'm a hairdresser, and fortunately have not had to do this particular haircut yet. I'm not a fan. I agree with Taylor Swift's explanation of how this haircut came to be: the blowdryer exploded on the back of her head.

My Theory? This style use to be the thing for underground rockers to wear. Kind of party of the "I just woke up and came here" look. They had the front relatively straight but the back looked like the worst bed head ever. Anyway, there was a middle class mom who once was huge in the rock scene and just couldn't let it go. So she adapted this haircut as her last grasp to hold on to who she was. Then all her friends saw it and though "how rebellious, screw our husbands, we want one too!"

Actually, I believe seeing this cut well before Jon&Kate Plus 8, all over the emo girls, in middle school. seriously, it's been around for a good long time, just not in blonde variations. the swoop in the front, which has become oh so popular today, is also a variant on the classic emo fashion.

i think this haircut was supposed to be a more female version of the mullet, business in the front, party (or in this case, utter porcupine chaos) in the back.

I think it's just a woman's way of making her short bob haircut look more punk. It's a rebellion against straight hair for girls who's hair is too short to curl.

Sonic the haircut is a cultural response to the mullet. Women everywhere hated the mullet SO MUCH that they decided to create the exact opposite, aggressively dye it, and make it pretty much permanently spiked with products.
An incredible number of women i know have described the Sonic as "funky" or "young", which might be part of the reason it won't die, but i have no real explanation for that.

A lot of women have this haircut because 1) it's easy to maintain and style, and 2) it's supposed to be a "reclaiming your youth" thing.
But mostly it works like too much tanning... you just look ridiculous.
