I don't really understand Akira.

Humans were trying to make some sort of 'perfect' or 'all powerful' human but it wasn't figured that humans are not supposed to be all powerful and the analogy of this was of a child having some sort of envious rivalry and not wanting to be controlled.

Kinda dumb and a bit gore heavy but soooo well animated.

@GrantgJackson i wouldn't say this is scary, but the the whole idea of this happening to someone is really disturbing and like you said pretty fucked up. imagine if your best friend was like tetsuo, he/she gained an extraordinary power and used it for evil, became unstoppable, and in the end the power overwhelmed and destroyed them and there's nothing you could do about it.

@Cadatroopa my guess is that his powers were trying to expand through a weak part of his body (his arm), and he'd been fighting to prevent them from expanding beyond his control but when Kaneda blew it up they overwhelmed him before he had the chance to regain control, thats just what i think anyway...

@Deivil007 Think of it as the physical manifestation of tetsuo's psychokinetic strength gone horribly out of control through rapid evolution in an attempt to accommodate that power. Unlike Akira who ascended beyond the need for a human body, Tetsuo's body instead tried to adapt through exponential cell growth. In fact in later clips the scientist inside that observation van watches tetsuo's form take the shape of a new born child; though he does not mention it we can see it clearly.

@zombiespecialist without the drugs he had been taking his control over his abilities went wild through rapid evolution and needed to expand beyond his body. His body then began to expand to compensate and even tried to absorb nearly anything and everything to add to the new body that would contain such power. If you look at the "blob" closely you'd see a new body being formed if rather horrifically; Think a fetus suddenly growing and rapidly maturing outside of a womb.

@Cadatroopa My guess would be that any break in Tetsuo's concentration; already strained fighting Kaneda as well as dealing with the 3 kids along with quickly crushing the SOL system the military tried to use, would be enough for Tetsuo's body to try adapting. Self preservation can kick in even when we ourselves may be unaware of it, in Tetsuo's case it was rapid evolution aided by that power.

@KLamki1 I think you're missing the point. He mutates because his powers are out of his control and distort his body in an effort to expand. If they kept expanding they would have created an explosion that created a new universe (a big bang) which is why Akira came to take him someplace where that could happen. Its usually explained at this part by the doctor & tetsuo but in this dub its not.

I've always loved Tetsuo's little rant @ 0:18, as exaggerated as it is in this dub I still like it. I always thought of it as a good representation of how mentally scarred he is at this point in the movie. Also how he thinks of himself as a god especially when he says "you want to use chemicals to turn me into a humanoid like those other kids", then he breaks the chair after .. so fucking cool lol

Dude, please help me. I have this version on VHS that no longer has picture only sound, really crappy sound, and have been looking for a dvd or downloadable version for 15 years. I first watched this when I was 14...33 now and it is still my pinnacle of awesome. I have bought the remastered twice and downloaded what I thought was the original eng/dub 8 times. Where did you find this? better yet...where can I get this?

Im not sure if I remember correctly, but I think this is supposed to be the creation of another universe. In science, they believe the there are countless universes that all reside in the 'omniverse' the other universes start out like bubbles and have there own laws of physics. Once a new universe is started it brakes down all mater down to the atom. Think of it like reformatting a hard disk. Thus in the end you witness a "BIG BANG" all energy and matter is there, just displaced, and then reused
