  • I have had IBS since I was 10 years old, I'm 29 this year and it has only got worse as I get older and no doctors or sprcialists have been able to help me. Everything I do is dictated to me by my IBS, I don't run my life, the IBS does. One doctor said to me a couple of years ago that I have IBS because I'm a very anxious person, well woudn't you be after living with it for so long, that was his diagnosis as to why I have IBS, what a JOKE!!! Except its not a jke its my life, its very upsetting.

  • I'm 16 and i have the same problem but the weirdest thing is it only occurs when i'm at school,i try to empty myself before school by getting up very early but still the pain in my lower area still hurts,i always feel that i don't need it but my gut thinks differently which makes it difficult to leave the class-room and explaining to the teacher why i need to go (i make excuses instead of explaining really) i just hope that it will disapear in my last months at school for GCSE.

  • no-spa might be very helpful to calm the intestines

  • Fevarin helped me with this anxiety :) , ppl please consult a psichiatrist :) (xanax for start )

  • This video also describes my situation perfectly. I'm 19 and I moved to Boston a year ago for college. In Boston I've had a lack of two CRUCIAL things- large, public restrooms, and close friends who understand. Its been miserable trying to navigate in such an unfamiliar place with no help. Most places in Boston don't have public restrooms and if they do, its just one stall. I had to take an incomplete grade on some of my classes because I missed class too much due to IBS. This condition is hell.

  • I hear ya, mate. And my sympathy and support go to all those who suffer this syndrome. There are cures out there for you so don't give up. Sometimes, it may just be your body reacting to certain kinds of food as some posters on here mentioned already. Take heart and peace be with you.

  • This IBS thing is a joke, doctors know next to nothing about it. I've spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours at doctor offices and they all tell me to eat more fiber and that its all in my head. Its not all in your head when you life is reduced to staying home and watching TV , torture for a guy who used to be an active outdoorsman. It has reduced the quality of my life down to a drepressed zombie like state I don't really enjoy anymore. Its the worst thing ever.

  • Good video. I have exactly the same problem.

  • Surprised it took me this long to check youtube videos about IBS... Glad I found your vlogs here. Sounds exactly like me... except I HATE public washrooms so it's even worse. I'll be reading over the website, thanks for the info, even if it took me 4 years to find it :)

  • @InkedCanadianGuy LOL! - this video is quite well buried as I made it over 4 years ago - most people find it when searching for IBS stuff. My subs rarely stumble across it. Glad you found it in the end :o)

  • It's so reassuring to see other people talking about this problem, because it's something I believe a lot of people suffer with but *do not* talk about. I've tried to tell a handful of people about my IBS so that they can make allowances when travelling, working etc, and it doesn't help when they grimace as if to say "Please do not talk about your insides, I don't want to know!" If I were diabetic or asthmatic I wouldn't need to feel embarrassed about telling people that. It's very difficult.

  • @BellamyBlue Indeed, this is a condition where you truly get to find out who your genuine friends are.

  • My god I feel for you.I am 14, I don't have a problem this serious but I have an extremely weak bladder and I can tell how you feel.. I have to go the toilet constantly and I can't walk when I need the toilet, I have been bullied before because I have accidents a lot and it's just awful.I have had the problem for as long as I can remember and I have been publicly embarrassed countless times. I am on medication now but I rely on the medication. I know your case is worse but I know how you feel x

  • I have severe IBS and the part where you´re saying that it´s frustration when people forget and when you´d have to explain it all over....that is EXACTLY how I feel. I´m getting sick of repeating myself all over, and I´ve become hateful towards people in general cause of this. I just cant stand people asking me to do stuff with them anymore since they will see me as this "boring guy" when I say i Cant. So I simply dont talk to anyone but my closest friends no more.

  • I have not been diagnosed with IBS, but I've for sure got the symptoms and clearly inherited it from my dad. I'm only seventeen, but I'm already coming to realize I really wish I didn't have it. I don't have this anxiety to stay at home - thank goodness but I do feel the pain and I also feel embarrassed when at a friend's home and having to use their bathroom and be in there for a while. It's annoying but... I guess I must be dealing with it a lot better than most. :/

  • You have more or less explained my whole entire life in this video blog right here. Fear of leaving the house (I only ever go oout if I REALLY have to)!!! I always sit there hoping there will be nearby toilets where ever I go, my condition is so extreme, I have to ring up venues, I am at to ask them where their toilets are and if they any, in advance before I can psychologically prepare myself to going our somewhere. It is a horrible thing to have :o(

  • You have described me 100% im only 22 and i first started with this when i was 17 and Im sure you know it is the worst thing i have ever had and i have two kids and i just stay locked up in the house all day everyday and i get so sad because i want to go play with my kids at the park and i want to be there for their doctors appointments but im to scared and no matter how much i tell people they think i just want to be lazy and i feel so alone everybody in my family knows but seem to not care!!

  • I have IBS and Lactose. All this bloating and anxiety, nut I worry about having accidents at school . People don't understand, and they arn't nice. Its embarrsing to talk about! I do feel isolated. I have taken alvera and gas x. But the bloating is just so much. I might now also be gluten intolerant. Argghhhhhh.

  • 13 years of similar symptons...man it feels like going maaaad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! inbox me here at g mail if u like...people think im just procrastinating but it really is a problem.doctors dont see nothing wrong, psychiatrists dont get it,pills just postpone the problem...so whats left? i keep changing my food habits and just started going to the gym...we'll see

  • I've had it for 3 years and it is absolutely aweful! the phycological part i can totally relate! i can ride in a car though. conciddering i'm 11 and i'll have it for the rest of my life is really scary and i sometimes cry myself to sleep because it is so scary to think that. i hear it runs genetically. my dad has it so i think thats where i got it from. i tried the beano, gas x prevention, the tiny green pills, dairy enzymes, and more!

  • @PieEmma Sorry to hear that. Don't loose heart too soon though, there are lots of ways to tackle this issue, many of which involve just avoiding certain types of foods that can trigger it.

A lot of people get a major improvement when they cut out dairy products for example - might be worth a try?

  • Hey, great video. You've just described everything I've been going through for the past 9 months. Finally, someone out there gets it. Have you had any improvements since you made the video? I'm currently looking for work, which is hard enough in a recession, and to make it worse I can only apply for jobs which are 20 minutes away from where I live.

Try digestive enzymes for a while, they helped me. They didn't totally get rid of the problem but I did notice a slight improvement.

  • @ RagingHangover , I DISAGREE, I have IBS and have gone thru Every Test that the Doctor could do, And by what you said to do, is Wrong. If you have been Diagnosed with IBS, the Doctor does not know what else it could be, or how to Treat it and thats the Problem I am having, Just like many Other IBS Suffering people. So before you make a stupid comment, make sure it has some Facts, because I for ONE Suffer from IBS, and It's No Fun. @ rickvanman, This video is Right, I deal with the same symptoms

  • hey, i just turned 14, and i had diareeah for the past 3 years atleast 5 days a week. i cannot control when i go and i really think i have a serious issue, but, my parents dont belive me because this has gone on so long. i cant go out with my friends and i always have to make somthing up when i run to the bathroom in school because im embaressed of this, im starting to consider homeschooling or somthing. does anyone else have these symptoms, or, does anyone know what it is or if it is dangerous.

  • im with you as regards to planning journey's rick. Ive had this since i was 17 and am now 30.it got better for a couple of years in my mid-20's but the last year has been awfull. i hate travelling in cars. im at ease when i know there is a bathroom near by and i find people are understanding when you explain as its becoming more of a known condition. i find the worst thing about it is that even at my youngish age i feel it denies me so many opportunities.the video is excellent

  • @Ozz19801 I have to agree with everything you said, especially the bit about letting people know and not hiding it. Thanks for the comments.

  • i have this to.. :( no one seems to understand. i also have celiac disease besides and can only eat gluten free food but still have these issues daily.. you should message me at my gmail.

  • And lastly, (sorry for the multi-posts) No, I am not saying ALL 'IBS' is caused by this, but I do strongly feel that much of it is and it is a real shame that many people haven't even looked into these two infections.

  • Another source of useful information is a site called badbugs (search for it in google) and no it does not sell anything. Hopefully you'll find some relief from this horrible sh*t. One last time because it is very important, the stool test must be over 3-Day and must use a Fixative (preservative) as those bug die quickly outside the colon. Obviously It's up to you...Take care I really hope you all find an end to all this 'IBS'. It is not all in your head.

  • I cannot believe so many people are willing to accept the BS answer of 'IBS' being all in your head. Do yourselves a favor and get tested properly (3-Day Stool Test WITH FIXATIVE) at a lab that knows how to look for Parasites. I'm very certain most of you will find an infection with Blastocystis Hominis AND/OR Dientamoeba Fragilis. These two bugs are considered 'harmless' by out-of-date western doctors, yet they very much cause 'IBS' and even Wikipedia has them listed on the IBS page. Go Check!

  • I'm new to IBS and just recently, I too contracted it. I think it's IBS because I alternate between constipation and diareah. But lately, I've noticed that certain beverages were the culprit for the diareah. IE Coffee, regular and decaf. By avoiding coffee, and driking tea instead, I've lessened my effects. Also, I'm on Align and drinking lactaid milk, which seems to have improved my symptoms somewhat. It's just a matter of figuring out the triggers, I guess.

  • I am not sure if I have IBS I have the oposite problem Pain and Constipation is that IBS as well? Thank you for sharing your video on IBS.

  • @Morningsidenursery Could be, but always best to get it checked out by a doctor as IBS symptoms are often similar to symptoms of other conditions.

  • @rickvanman take 1 cup of metamucil in the moning every day u will not get the diariah

  • @Morningsidenursery you never really know if you got IBS, since the doctors tell you that you have IBS when they dont find anything wrong.. typical failed doctor.

  • Hey rick, I have the same problems that you have. The problem is that I am only seventeen years old. At first it was not that bad but now it has escalated and I can´t go anywhere where there is not a toilet near. I have seen a doctor about it and they say that it is just a temporary thing that will just go over but I don´t think so. The worst thing is that I can´t visit my girlfriend. She always ahs to come to me.

  • I have the pain in the ass IBS. Although, I very rarely get stomach pain and such. I just get the diarrhea. It's very stressful. I've opted out of going to some concerts and other events with family and friends under the guise of I was busy, sick, etc.. Not until recently have I got it under control. I was wanted to lose some weight, so I went on a diet. A few weeks after starting the diet, my IBS has gone away.

Everyone who has it, has my condolences.

    Excellent video rickvanman!!

  • @sheba106 What do you take for Diarrhea? If you arent already taking Imodium.. buy them, in 10-30 min(person to person) your diarrhea is gone.

  • i love you for this vid...your so brave!

more to say but will send you a messege !

  • hey rickvanamn I can relate 100% to everything you have said in your video. For over 30 years I lived with uncontrolled IBS ruining my life. Quite accidently though I found my personal cure which is WHEY PROTEIN taken three times daily. Please watch my video and I hope it will help you lead a normal life as it has done for me.

  • @zrunner240Z Glad whey protien wiorked for you - I found it made my stomach ten times more unpredictable. Just goes to show how IBS affects different people in different wats.

  • are people born with IBS or does it just suddenly happen to you?

  • @peacefrog1916 it usually comes on anytime from about 5 yrs onwards as we build up intollerances to certain foods.

  • Hello! I can definitely relate to you, especially the bit about mapping out precisely where restrooms are and how outings are a dash between the nearest ones. I am 19 and enjoy being with my friends, but am so afraid most times. Also, right now I am currently in college, and have not yet decided an area of study. I've considered medical research and your video has inspired me to head in that direction. Who knows? Maybe I can help find a cure for it! Thanks so much for this =)

  • What a nice person you are. You're being so honest about it, which i can only give you credit for, as you hold nothing back, which is how everyone should be really? I'm sick of my family urging me to eat more, e.g "Are you sure you don't want anymore roast potatoes with that?" Of course I'm damn sure for christs sake. i don't look this green today for nothing. Why do you think i keep going to your toilet today? THESE people (family) who've known me to have i.b.s for years. *sigh*

  • Hi :) My I.B.S seems to go away on it's own for a few year, only to remission itself a few year later. That always happens with me. I find cutting down portion size of meals can help. Also, when it's at it's worst, try sitting on the toilet with a drink. Using a hot water bottle can help a lot too. It's the spasms that i hate. I've given myself a hernia 3 times, from straining too hard. Boy was that a lesson. lol. I kept vomiting, so be careful when..........clearing yourself out.

  • i have had many operations ect and tried lots of drugs for my leg and CRPS but i have suffered IBS probably for most of my life... anyway i have recently discovered LDN (look it up on google capital letters..) i reckon this could well help!! well live in hope anyway... i, myself cant try this yet, as ive just had another operation and am on morphine but am planning on trying this in the next few months... i have been taking drugs for about 9 years, but am gonna ditch this for LDN... good luck

  • Thanks Rick for the video!

I am living with IBS since 4 years now and I just discovered its name, I didn't even know that it has a name, I thought I was the only one who is facing this problem.

After 2 years with IBS, and due to my panic, I stopped eating during the day; The first and only meal that I get is at the end of my day before I go to sleep which will be "digested" on the next morning

I know that it is not a good solution for other people I am just sharing my experience with the readers

  • @raedbadawi glad it lepled you feel not alone. do check out the IBS-Life website as there is a load of information there that will help you.

    Rick

  • @raedbadawi Try some Whey Protein three times a day it "cured" my IBS symptoms. Check out my IBS video on my page for more info

  • wow... I had to keep wiping my tears while watching this video.

Because everything you said. EVERYTHING. I related to.

It is just so good to know that I am not alone. That I'm not making up excuses. That I'm not really just a boring person who doesn't like to "do anything", as my friends say.

They often invite me places and then say "oh yeah, I forgot.. of COURSE you can't."They think It's an excuse because I'm lazy.. but they have no idea how much I'd love to leave the house.

  • @IndustrialKitt3n Kake - i feel your pain, and welcome to the club. No you are definitely not alone. There are several things you can do to keep the IBS at bay, but it does take a fair bit of effort and willpower to keep up - a bit like going on a diet.

I've just discovered cutting milk out of my diet has helped enormously. Might be worth a try.

  • @IndustrialKitt3n Try some Whey Protein three times a day it "cured" my IBS symptoms. Check out my IBS video on my page for more info

  • How do you work? I Can't get a job because of this.

    How did you do it?

  • @IndustrialKitt3n I know how you feel. I have had IBS for 9 years and don't have a job..because i can't,how do you explain to potentional employers about the condition that we suffer from and i worry about the embarassment of having to run to the toilet all the time.

  • @mhari1980 It's so hard. I have only had one job in my life. I have a video on my life with IBS on my channel. if you'd like to watch it. Message me if you want!

  • we need to beat this! ive had it for 9 year now, i have tried several medications, therapies and diets and it has really interfered with my social/family/studying life and im only 21, it is very hard to deal with as it comes with many extra problems for me such as insomnia, anxiety, stress, bloating and so on.....many people just think im overdramatic, crazy, obsessive and full of excuses but no one can really say anything unless they have it as well, thanks for your video,

  • we need to beat this! ive had it for 9 year now, i have tried several medications, therapies and diets and it has really interfered with my social/family/studying life and im only 21, it is very hard to deal with as it comes with many extra problems for me such as insomnia, anxiety, stress, bloating and so on.....many people just think im overdramatic, full of excuses but no one can really say anything unless they have it as well, thanks for your video,

  • You are not alone. I've had this my whole life, to every detail as you've said; the mental conditioning, the panic on the airplane etc. I'm 41 now. My whole life I've thought I was the only one in the WORLD with this, and no one understands. Thanks for posting and I wish you peace.

  • @wallywow Thanks for your comment. I'm 41 too!

  • Rick, do you still have this problem? I know how to cure it easy. Actually anyone can cure anything using German New Medicine. You can read the entire site, buy the book, study hard for months and cure yourself of anything, easy, within days, even dry skin, balding, tumors, ulcers, anything...I can email you the thought patterns to get rid of IBS if you want.

  • @TeacherPhilEnglish Hi Phil, yes its still a major issue. I tried everything but eventually ran out of energy an enthusiasm to even attempt to cure it. These days I just live with it and ignore it to the best of my ability - it seems to work reasonably well. It would be interesting to read about what you are talking about though.

    Cheers

    Rick

  • ty, 4 making this clip, i also have suffered this all my life , and was a professional dancer ballet and model , i dont drive , but everything u said it was like i was saying the same from my own mouth , and guess what , just sold my house and bought a mobile home in australia , u are totally understood , and i just had to say good on u, 4 putting this out there, warm regards karen , my yahoo add, is astraaa100@yahoo.com.au , agreed u arnt alone hugs ....

  • @astraaa100 Thanks for the comments Karen. Glad you found the video.

I have a comprehensive website called IBS-Life which might offer you some helpful hints and tips for coping with this frustrating condition.

  • suffered with ibs for yrs now, pain is so bad everyday, its constant bubbly feeling and gas, tried all sorts of meidication nothing works, im always on the toilet, nice to know im not alone in this, wish i could cure it. thanks for video helps to know ppl have it too

  • You should try an herbal tincture called "artemisia absinthium" (aka wormwood) manufactured by the "herb Pharm" company. Most of the herbal pills don't work because they are too weak. It gave me my life back. It is a powerful antiparasitic - so much so that pharmaceutical companies make pills based on the active component artemsinin. Take 1 tsp every night before bed. If you have a "herxheimer reaction" (temp feel really horrible for a few days after taking it), it is killing a parasite.

  • My problem is that every time I'm in a situation where there are a lot of people and it's quiet, my anxiety goes through the roof and my stomach tightens up and I get gas. The more I think about it the worse it gets. I want to go back to college but it's tough and I'm stuck doing mediocre jobs...it's so demeaning. I want to learn and progress myself in life but this thing has taken a major toll on me. I'm emotionally drained and this is causing me physical problems now. Eff my life.

  • Dear Rickvanman, I have the same problem for 2 years now. What I am looking for is a Diaper designed especially for Diarhea. I mean One where if I am wearing a White suit, & have an accident , that nobody would know it. There are plenty for Urine problems, but none for Diahrea problems. If you know of any, Please let me know about it. Meantime Good Luck with coping with this Damned Disease! J.B.

  • I have it but it is not as bad as you say , may be you have another problem and not IBS, please check your self.

  • I have all the same symptoms except I am unable to burp. This leads to me having air build up all the time which leads to anxiety, especially at night, which in return causes more air. Its horrible not being normal and maybe one day a week I feel good. If only there could be a magical cure for us all!!!

  • Avoiding the fears of travel just make it worse for me later on.... I wish there was a cure.

  • I do have a trash bag in the car and baby wipes. They are my protection for just in case I ever need a bathroom - there it is, the trash bag. I have never used it, but it keeps me calm to know that it's there. I found that dieting and medication helps a lot, but most importantly, I force myself to face my fears. I don't allow myself to give into my fear of traveling, and although it is extremely stressful, it gets easier the more times I do it.

  • I have the same problem as you. I've had it for 8 years now - some years worse than others, but now it's nowhere near as physically bad as the first three years, but psychologically it feels the same. I thought about getting a van like yours, but the idea seemed to submissive to the disease for me.

  • I am 20 years old & I understand how you feel but for me its constipation. & I cant eat dairy anymore. & I am a male.

  • Rick, thank you for doing these videos. I can relate to absolutely every single thing you said! I must admit I'm quite used to being open with people about this now - have been involved with Anxiety UK (former National Phobics Society) talking at their big toilet phobia conference and was interviewed on their free toilet phobia dvd, I found that being honest with people made it so much easier but they still find it really hard to understand how it affects the day to day stuff!!!

  • my bowel habit has changed sinc like august. i used to go 2 times a day.. i was very regular.. now i go maybe once every 4 days. its like my bowels dont work the same.. and now my waste is dray and hard when it comes out where as it used to be wetter and softer.. and i feel bloated soemtimes... its weird.. just thought id mention

  • It was so good to find these videos. Your experience is the same as mine. I'm on a gluten free diet, which helps, but I still get caught up in the anxiety of it and wind up ill. I like to know where the bathroom is at all times and I avoid things like public transportation. I feel like I keep getting worse and worse as time goes by and I desperately want to find a way to get past this. I love to travel and am planning a trip over seas this week but am completely stressed out about it.

  • Thanks for the tip - unfortunately that particular method doesn't work for 90% of IBS sufferers.

  • I have IBS. Everything you say rings true...its spooky. Public transport, going in the car, going out for meals, being on top of a mountain, going to football matches. All these have been a problem for me due to panic attacks and IBS. Much improved at the moment (I've done all the above recently) but I agree, it is difficult to make people understand. They look bemused..even my close family. Its as if I am on screen talking seeing you explain your situation. Do get in touch

    John

  • I also have IBS, I've had it since 2001 or 02? And since then I haven't been out to eat with my family.

  • Whatever you do,never buy a pair of white trousers.

  • I was looking for a email address as I wanted to ask some questions but I fear asking in here .

  • If you prefer, you can contact me through the IBS-Life website contact page (see the notes area of this video)

  • TBH I'm m willing to try almost anything but am struggling with no diagnosis as yet ...but I am taking action while the doctors twiddle thumbs

  • Hi Rick,

It's your friend Srini again. Although I do not have IBS or any other condition that I am bothered about, but your video along with other videos I have seen today has really put my life in perspective. I always felt that I was deprived of many trivial things, but the way you live through your issue is incredible. I also commend your courage in coming out and really pouring our heart out to the world. Hope you can win against this illness!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Srini

  • Thanks for the kind comments Srini :o)

  • some are saying bone manipulation....any thoughts on this ?

I've had varying effects in searching trying various health changes etc ,...man , been some crazy times....glad to have found this vid, really, really glad,.thanks.

  • not heard of that one before - but glad you found the video.

  • me too, very glad I found it,. actually, its like I've found an oasis where people who feel the same are so I signed up for news letter etc, yeah it's something to do with something chiropractors have found, in that by manipulating certain bones in the spine it can have a positive effect on these probs ...it is what it is ..maybe worth people with better skills than I researching a little

  • I hear you with the family not understanding...o one does understand because folks usally'loo'k ok and others imply forget . i'm having similar symptoms to IBS/IBD though not, sounds odd it is.had an RTA since then had bowel issues along with pin/loss feeling from neck to toes mainly Lside and back, my back spasms quite regular the rest is constant aches/numbness... doing my head in.. the docs dont know/ wont give diagnosis and I've had this goin on for years ...

  • I think you are very brave for telling your story and posting it on youtube. I can relate to a lot of what you said.

  • I am suffering too, mine is triggered entirely by social situations and the fear of people knowing and judging me. I don't know how to break the cycle.

  • As you get older, you grow to care much less about what other people think of you.

It's a cruel fallacy to believe that people are judging you - in reality nobody cares, people are only interested in themselves. But this false belief is built into most people's psyche.

The way I broke the cycle was to realise that I am 1 person in 7 billion! Like a grain of sand on a whole beach. I'm simply not that important!

Any thoughts to the contrary are just self delusions.

    It worked for me anyway!

  • do you think it also helps to tell close friends rather than hiding it? I think the stress of hiding it is also making me worse.

  • Absolutely! There's nothing worse than lying or deceptive behaviour - it will kill your reputation and credibility.

Trying to hide this condition from others only makes it worse - get used to the idea of letting those around you know you have IBS- as a matter of fact. Don't make excuses for it.

This one act will take a lot of pressure off you.

If they have a problem with it (which they wo'nt) they they are NOT your friends. Rid yourself of these people - they will only bring you down.

  • I have now told my friend and she doesn't mind at all, I'm now hoping my symptons will ease around her as I am living with her in a months time. Thankyou so much for your advice! it really helped me overcome my fear.

  • Good for you! Lets hope this is the start of a new lease of life for you!

    Always happy to help :o)

    Rick

  • Don't feel embarrased. I have had to tell people many times, and at this point I just do a matter of fact statement. because I just find it such an annoyance for me. also I love your website.

  • Thanks for your comments :o)

  • i am in the same situation...

    i completely understand 1!

i dont like to explain it to people .. it gets embarrasing.. i didnt know there was other people out there that felt the same way..

lately my ibs is extremely bad and i have been so down.. but seeing this video made me realize i am not alone.. and other people feel the same way i do.. i stress when i dont have a bathroom nearby and it impacts how i live my life...

  • Trust me, you are not alone with this - it is much more common that people think.

The best advice I can give is don't hide it - let people know you have an IBS issue and may need to find a bathroom at a moments notice - this will take a lot of the pressure and social worry off you. most people are fine with it and accept it without any worries. If they have an issue with that - it's their problem, not yours.

  • Hey Rick, I'm from Sweden. Sorry to say I can't share your big problem.. But remember this is the worlds most common problem in this area.. And we are all humans.. Luckily for me I got a friend with the same problem and another one that's in to the doctor thing.. So I'm lucky to have them.. I can feel embaressed at times.. But the other side of me doesn't understand why, I'm human and it can happen any1.. So it cancels each other out you know.. I wish all ppl with IBS to unite and help others

  • Hi Rick! Thanks for posting Part 2.

  • new information on IBS, is a simple fact, yhay some of those noew diagnosed with IBS-D Actually have "Haba syndrome", ironically it has been know for many years hat "Cholestramin" is a solution for many , Colestyramin binds gall acids so they will not act as a lacxative in the colon, it helps me and many others, look it up on the internet best regards Ural

  • hi does anyone feel theres a lot more pain after drinking alchol, i used to enjoy whiskey but now i cant touch it, It just seems to be ten times as bad after drinking, and is getting worse after a year. Is it a typical symptom to have pains in your sides as well.

  • Hi Rick. Im 20. just turned 20 this year. and From January. I started off with this problem as well. its was according to me due to excessive stress of my High School exams. and excessive drinking of tea. i feel exactly the same. God bless us all

  • Your Story Is Basicly my life. Its hard to leave the house and be in cars. Esp in traffic. and even at work. I panic and end up in the rest room for almost 1 hr out of the 8 hrs I work.

  • You are a brave man for putting yourself out there like this. I have had IBS symtoms for years but have only been recently diagnosed with it....you are absolutely right about IBS being a phsychological disorder for the most part, which causes people to assume that it's all in your head and you just worry too much. But this disorder is REAL and does affect every daily aspect of ones life, so that is why it is so stressful and has caused me to become a recluse in some ways and less outgoing.

  • Rick I've suffered with IBS since I was 12 and now that I'm 49 I've learned a few tricks.Fasting before a plane trip enabled me to take my wife on trips.Metamucil 3 tbs every 2 or 3 days.Alcohol to socialize but like you I can't drive. The psychological part gets easier as we age BUT... I know how HARD it is trying to explain to family 40 times a year ??? :0)........ I do have a way to deaden the nerves without sugery and get it to back off.

  • to plan out the journey so i know in my head where the nearest pub, resturant shopping center etc is.public transport is a big no no and i take imodium for car journeys depending on how far ill be travelling.i hope to join the royal navy soon but im worried that this problem will prevent me from doing so.

your van is a great idea and ive actuaslly thought about building one myself.

    cheers

  • ive had this problem for about 9 years and i have all the same problems as you.i cant go out without atleast 30mins on the loo.then when i go out i need 2 run back home 2 go again.

Also i dont travel too well either.i too have

  • I don't get it! I've been diagnosed with IBS and I don't have diarria. And I don't want it either! But on the contrary...I hardly ever go! I'm just really cramped up. Apparently I'was so severe that just with a simple test with a tube on the mouth, the doc was able to diagnose me. My stomach was cramping by its self, pretty severely for what I understand. Later then, he did a colonoscopy, and the same thing... What are the common symptoms anyway? Anybody?

  • you need to check out the IBS website I made (see the notes) - it tells you everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!

    good luck

    Rick.

  • Hi Rick! I'm from California and I literally feel the exact same way as you. I've even resorted to carrying plastic bags and loo paper with me in my car just to have sort of a "safe haven" on journeys. Never had to use it, but you're right it's the "oh my god what if I have to go... RIGHT NOW?"

  • Comment removed

  • could this be related to a yeast infection in the stomach?

  • Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease - book by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn - Plant-based diet, starches. No meat. No fish. No oil. No dairy.

Pioneered by Dr. John McDougall. See The McDougall Program, p322-326 - Colitis Mild (Spastic Colitis) / IBS -

"Your bowel problems are not due to your emotional make-up (although unending bowel pains and diarrhea can drive even the strongest person to emotional collapse".

Difficult cases - allergic reactions - try 'elimination diet'.

    Worth a look?

  • "Most people with IBS improve almost as soon as they begin to eat a starch-based diet that provides all types of fresh or fresh-frozen plant foods.

"An occasional sufferer will need to avoid specific plant foods causing an allergic reaction".

"Plant foods notorious for (that) are wheat and citrus fruits".

It is a _great_ diet otherwise. Chew steel and spit bullets - brown rice affects seratonin(?). YMMV.

Amazon, abebooks - s'hand for book. B. of luck.

    Exc videos RVM.

  • Excuse 'highlights - shorthand', which now appear insensitive, after hearing part 1 -- it wasn't intended.

I blame the 500 char limit. Mostly. :-).

I still say Dr. McD walks on water. For me at least.

A very canny man. How he noted differences in Asian generations in Hawaii, by diet, is a fascinating, vital story. imo.

And still relevant to IBS and anyone still on the SAD diet (Standard American Diet), = UK too.

  • I am in the EXACT same situation as you.

I was diagnosed with IBS but to add to that I was diagnosed with Social anxiety too and they tend to trigger each other.

I still have social anxiety and the ibs isnt as bad as it was but like you its still in my mind. Constantly thinking " what if i get here and there isn't a restroom, Its miserable.

I love your van! That was a very neat idea!

  • When the IBS kicked in, the company decided they didn't want to deal with my symptoms (running to the bathroom constantly, etc)

I was forced to move back to live with some family. I now am unemployed and hardly able to do anything I used to love. I have become totally anti-social and afraid to meet anyone, because I don't think they will understand it.

Anyways, thank you once again for your video and the website. There definitely are people out there who understand!

    --------------------Peace.

  • I have been suffering with chronic IBS-C for about one year.

Thank you Rickvanman for sharing your story! I relate completely, and am very sympathetic. IBS has pretty much destroyed my life.

I am now twenty, and began to experience the symptoms around 07/08. At the time, I was working at a good job, and became the top sales person.

  • FG you have 60 plus _good_ years to go.

See McD below. Worth a try?

Guarantee no more C. 'Ask me how I know' joke.

  • thank you rick for writing me back, I'm getting ready for about an 20 trip, I'm just not eating before hand, I cant think of what else to do, most days I'm ok, Yes, it is all in my head, stress really brings it on , and not knowing where the next bathroom will be while I'm out, thank you so much for the support, it means the WORLD to me

  • No Probs. If you get a moment take a look at my IBS website - there is a ton of useful information there which may help. (link in the notes area).

Good luck with the trip - remember immodium is your friend!

  • I just wanted to thank you for your video, all I did was cry while watching it, I ,like yourself suffer from this, I have exactly the same fears as you do going on 18 yrs now and have never told a soul about, I dont know what to do anymore, such a hold on my life.

  • Hi. sorry to hear about IBS having such a hold on your life, but it doesn't have to be this way. There are many things you can do to alleviate the symptoms. If it is mostly psycological, then hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy are your best options. Changing your diet and taking certain things will also help considerably. The crutial thing to understand is that IBS will continue to rule your life until the day you decide to actually take action. So make that appointment today!

  • i think we just have to try to not think about it and find things to do so we dont have time to stay and think about it im hacing IBs i noticed when im very busy and not thinking about it its okay its good

  • my dad doesn't have IBS technically, but he does have celiac disease, which has some of the same problems. He has to really watch what he eats because if he accidentally eats even a wee bit of gluten or wheat or modified food starch, he'll have GI problems. It's not just a food allergy, it's an autoimmune disorder.

  • I'm 13, And I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It seems like most people think IBS is a nutrition problem, and like this person, its more a mental thing. I have anxiety, and going out to do anything, go to the movies, go to the store, even go to school, I can't deal with the anxiety/IBS Combo. It totally kills me.

  • im 17 and have been suffering from IBS over the last year. especially recently it has become more severe and i am desperate for any help. i have tried appropriate dieting and fibre supplements but they havnt seemed to work. can you recommend any herbal remedies or medications i can try>?

  • Hi Roly. I'm afraid it's a case of figuring out what works for you as IBS is different for every person. There is some excellent info on my IBS website (see link in the notes area) that may help you. be sure to check out the info on fiber - insoluble fiber is an IBS irritant!

    cheers

    Rick.

  • Hi there, I have some info that may help some of you:

There's a lot of research linking IBS to parasitic infections such as Blastocystis and D.Fragilis. The only way to test for parasites is to do a stool test in 'fixative'. Blasto is found in something like 80% of IBS sufferers and post treatment most experience a resolve of their symptoms.

Ctd... on my next post (out of space! will include useful websites)

  • as u told its just a mind game., whenever i do stuff which i am very involved and which interests me, i never feel it. only when i think something will go wrong it always gives me worries. may be we all need to be more comfortable doing things of our interests to divert our minds from thinking we are not normal. its been 3 years now, seeing this i felt someone in this world has the same fear as me.

  • Do you know it's not small intestine bacterial overgrowth or Blastocystis hominis? science doesn't know a lot about ibs, b. hominis, and SIBO, but there seems to be an overlapping... so if you didn't do it yet, go take a hydrogen breath test and if it is positive to SIBO than ask for riflaximin, wich is a non absorbable Antibiotic. Otherwise go for a b.hominis test.

I'm sick since april 08. If i ever will heal i will be researching in the field.

    greets from switzerland.

    D.

  • Thanks for the reply. Some interesting ideas there, I may look into them.

Feel free to visit my new website all about everyday living with IBS (see the notes for a link)

We are encouraging people to send in their tips on making life easier for people living with IBS, and also their IBS stories.

    Cheers.

    Rick.

  • yes ive been like this for a little over 4 years but dont know for sure if it is ibs...can relate to things you said i dont think people can rly understand what its like unless you live with it.

  • i feel like joining you in your van for some peppermint tea (or whatever else is good for us ibsers). thanks for the video and all my respect to you!

  • Hi, I watched your video, take care!

I'm having the same problem for 17 years ^^.

I hope U find a cure, let me know if U found one, I'm gonna do DA' same!

    Bye.

  • and now van man makes even more sense ;)

This video is over a year ago, in other videos ive seen you go to places, many people worked with, did you ever manage to "fix it" you say that in your video but i find that a little weird sounding but you get what im trying to say i hope just curious

Great video man for people top learn / relate

  • Hi Cybrax.

    Thanks for watching.

No I have not yet managed to find a cure. this is something you just have to manage.

Some days are better than others, but I am practically house-bound without the van!

  • This was a great series, however i do not cope with this problem i found it interesting to learn about, i had never heard of it until today

A lot of respect for making this video and talking about it, some parts i can relate too in another way because of things of my own

  • i dont believe its all in your head,

what happens is that when u dont have a bathroom nearby u get more nervous and it affects u more. feeling stressed, anxious, or nervous makes it worse. but it doesn't mean that u actually dont need it.

  • Hello, i have had IBS for 3 years now. I have been taking imodium for the last 2 years and it make a huge difference. Like u said in the video it is all in ur head, i have same problem as u. The worst part is my girlfriend of 2 years, has a problem with me not being spontaneous enuff.TY for the video.

  • what cured it for me was counter-conditioning and square breathing. I also don't eat any junk food or anything made of grain.

  • After reading through some of the comments, ive noticed people trying to give advice. I really hate to admit this but by far the most therapeutic realizations ive had is, "If you have to shit, shit!" as horriablely embarrising as it is you can always run behind a building or car or woods and any one with my form of ibs knows it takes about 2 seconds to shit, it will be over and done with.. Hell i have go as far as to keep my doctors note, hand sanitizer, and paper towels in my pocket at all time

  • Rick, What a great video I had to show both 1 & 2 to my husband so he could have a better understanding. This is exactly what I go through it has been with me since grade school and has gotten more severe as I got older affecting school, jobs, traveling. I think this video is inspirational and sends a message that no one is alone, from the anxiety, pain, traveling with groups, fear of no bathroom. Thank you for the great videos, my husband now has a better understanding :)

  • Glad my video was of help to you!

  • hiya,

just wondered if you'd tried meditation, as you said the problems really in the mind. If you can strengthen stilling and calming that then you are on the path to overcoming this disorder.

    best regards,

    darius

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. I have the same fears. Travelling by plane is the absolute worst. I don't want to have an accident on a plane with so many people around. I have to take anti-anxiety pills the night before I travel and the day I travel, along with a load of anti-diarrhea medication. I'm so out of it because of the medication that it takes a few days for my head to clear. Now I have a motor home and I find it's the only way to travel!

  • dude i got the same exact thing as u. and quite frankly if i dont find anything thats gonna work for me in the next 3 months blowing my head off my shoulders doesnt seem like such a bad idea, i cant get a job go out. No point in living. ive tried everything and my doctors treat my like a fuckin idiot.

  • Just seen your video.Oh my god. you are my double. You have the exact same kind of ibs as me. You describe everything exactly the same.

I am a lorry driver and ibs has taken over my life. Every single trip i make has to be planned for loo stops.and traffic jamms are just unthinkable. The amount of emergency stops i have to make are getting more and more. Im so glad i saw this video because i thought i was alone. Thanks for posting.

  • Rick. Excellent video which has offered me comfort and hope where previously there was nothing but fear and gloom. In describing your experiences, you might just as well have been referring to me, so great and many were the similarities. I am often reluctant to leave the house and even when I rarely go to the shops, I get screwed up as I convince myself that all the cubicles will be occupied (and they often are!). I am going to try hypnosis rather than raiding my Immodium. Thank you so much.

  • Hi

Glad my video was some comfort to you. Do be sure to let me know how you get on, if you go for hypnosis.

    Good luck.

    Rick.

  • Hey rick! I've had the same problem (IBS) ever since I started high school and it has really taken over my life I'm completely miserable. Everyday is so challenging and I feel so alone, you're right it is a part of who I am and I have to learn to deal with it

    Best of Luck!

  • Rick, I'm so glad you have managed to control your IBS. I know the pain and anguish because sometimes I have to interrupt a class and go to the washroom because of my condition. The most frustrating part is indeed opening up about IBS but I'm also one of those who suffer more from diarrhea than from constipation. It is a tough syndrome that makes you wonder why YOU have it, not someone else (1 out of 5 UK residents). Like mentioned in the video, it has such a severe impact on a person's life.

  • Good Video. I share the same frustration at 1:30 about offers by friends to do something spur of the moment. I mean, I can't tell the truth. I am not gonna say "No, I just ate a meal and I need atleast 3 hours because of the strong chance I will have an urgent need to use the bathroom in that time span." lol The thought of a common activity like going out to eat, and then going to a movie creates more worry than a future trip to the dentist to have a tooth pulled. No kiddin.

  • Hiya mate! Just wanted to say great video, I think what you've done shows that your a strong person, not many people would be willing to be as open and honest about something like this. So good on ya mate! I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, it's kinda the same in some ways. It takes control of your life. I've only recently been getting my life back together. All the best, and best wishes, Dan

  • Thank you. I'm new to this problem. I am still learning to explain to people why I must run out of conversations sometimes to immediately go to the bathroom. People do no understand that when I try to excuse myself I need to leave immediately.

  • what do you think is going to happen to you if you cant get to a toilet?i know complete and utter terror irational thoughts am i correct? then maybe a panic attack god forbid they are bad enough been there done that if you need to talk great take care

  • hi there conditioning of the mind is a powerful thing and hard to escape from but it can be done believe me i have been there and still am somtimes i really do understand and there is no need for embarassment please if you need to talk let me know

  • I know what you mean mate, i'm 18 and had IBS for the past 2 years, sometimes it isn't that bad but on 2-3 occasions its been extremely painful, i'm on medication called "Mebeverine" it stops the amount of time it happens but of course it doesn't stop it completely. Hopefully in the future they will find a cure for this horrible disorder.

  • Your video is great. After my husband bought a van, a port a potty was put in back of the van. And like you just the thought of it being there is comforting. I've never had to use it. Now I go everywhere. I think with the help of Effexor and reconditioning my thoughts thru traveling has helped me. I've recently had a set back through illness, but I'm not going to let it get to me this time. I'm getting right back on the horse that bucked me off. Good Luck to you.
