just a question did marqueise merteuil have a cocaine addiction, or did roger humble just add that to cruel intentsions because it went with the whole upper east side rich girl
@Elanorele uum actually cocaine has been around since like the farros. it was around back then, and even marie antoinette was noted as using drugs such as cocaine
@c19ify cocaine comes from the coca leaf and was created by chemists at the end of the XIX century for aenestesy. The coca leaf has been around for a long time, but making cocaine with it require relatively sophisticated installations. Maybe MA was using drugs, but it was probably another one, there's always been plenty of them!
Thank you for posting this. It satisfied my curiosity without having to waste my money buying the DVD. It barely resembled the book, and was historically inaccurate. That said, it was enjoyably light and entertaining, as well as visually stunning, but for true authenticity and brilliant acting, you can't beat the pure perfection that was Dangerous Liaisons, starring a superbly cruel Glenn Close and an unforgettable performance by the amazing John Malkovich.
Well I must say that "Dangerous Liasons" is a very amazing film, but each film has its quilties of what they want to bring to the table, yes this version foces more on Cécile than the other character, I must say this version is well written also, in fact I like the costums, to me it is more realistic than the other version with Gelen Close!, don't get me wrong, "D.L" is an amzaing movie I love, but like I said both versions of there qulities of beauty!
This was a more lavish production. And I loved the wedding scene, and, Danceny with his friends looking down from the balcony at a disgruntled Meurteil.
Very disappointing ending because it never showed that Valmont gave all the letters to Danceny and he made them circulate and destryed Meurteils reputation which was lethal at that time. And also... oh can't be bothered, the other version by Stephen Frears was just so much better and more accurate. That's why they call it BASED on a novel by.... I suppose..
@redlocks1: This film version had a more satyrical ending I might say. Just thought it was kinda sad that Valmont's greatest revenge against the bitchy Merteuil happened when he was already deceased. Imagine if the other woman he was in love with also got preggers along with Cecile. hahaha.
If you liked Cruel Intentions, you should watch Dangerous Liasons. It's much closer to what the author had intended and the characters are much more convincing. It's a beautiful film filled with beautiful & wicked people and it builds up (like a good movie should) to an explosive end. You'll like it.
I, for one, am very glad we no longer life that... married off to some old fart before 16.... no say as a female, no independence, servant to my husband... I think not...
Dangerous Liasons is also a very nice movie, and it sticks better to the book .The book consits of letters, and in the version with glenn close you can see letters are being exchanged. This version though is nicer. The game of manipultion is more tacktfull in this version, in Valmont MMD de Merteul seems all nice and modest, while Glenn Close plays the biggest bitch ever, where you can see she is manipulating .
But isn't that the point? If you've read Laclo's collection of letters you must remember that Marquise is a total cynic. In fact Glenn has enlighten her character with touches of love and jealousy for Valmont.
I find this version very funny and a very interesting portrait of the era but nothing further.
I completely agree. In the book Merteul is cold, while Glenn is heated, not with love, but every other feeling you can think of. And really, Malkovich is the better Valmont. Firth is just so...bland ,in comparison. Not even sure why they cast him really. For a movie title Valmont, I felt very little presence from the character. I feel Cecile was the main character and they should have named the movie so.
couldn't agree more.... If you've seen John Malkovich and Glenn Close together (and the brilliant rest of the cast for that matter) this is like a Disney version of it... It shouldn't be about Cécile but about those evil little games by Merteuil and Valmont. Colin Firth was the wrong choice, he never came across evil enough. Bennett was ok, but no comparison to Close.
I agree that this movie pales in comparison to Dangerous Liasons. That version was so well done. All the sub-plots kept it interesting and flowed well together. This one seemed thin and lacked the dramatic ending you expect.
i dont think colin firth as an actor was the wrong choice after all it was the movie and the way it was made that made him not evil enough, your right though this was like a disney version, it had good acting though and was deeply entertaining.
The death of valmont isn't dramatic and I think it's a good thing. He had a death at the measure of his life. After all, despite all the good things he did at the end, he remains an awful character. This version of "les liaisons dangereuses" is wonderful. Thank you for posting this video.
Your welcome!its just a great privilige for someone to upload the bestest of the best movies as im completley devoted to 18th century france(Georgian)Besides Colin firth is a role model for other men who want to be in the periodic drama acting industry!
Never read the book but now I def. will. It's sad cause it seems that Merteuil was hoping to break everyone. But in the final scene with her she realizes that she did just the opposite. She gave the "kids" more confidence and I guess opened up Tourvel to love more passionately. The only one left broken and alone, is her.
Merteuil is not a "bad" person. Like she said to Valmont at the beginning, she was once like Cecile. People around her "harshened her". Her husband was probably horrific (when she tells Valmont that she never remarried because she didn't anyone to claim her again like a prize...). There's something quite desperate in everything she does.
M. is actually a very ambigus character and you can't help to think that, in her very odd way, she actually loves Valmont.
Ah! And there, in a nut shell, is the great revelation: the same aplies to virtually every "bad" person in history. When you look closer, there are always "explanantions". But explanations are never excuses. We define who we are by the choices we make. And Merteuil made some pretty bad choices...
@Lydzi: She loved him enough to cause him his death? Frankly, I don't think she deserves to even be at his funeral. Her character depicts a very jealous, bitter, and spurned lover. In fact, she is the perfect character people love to hate and she performs it excellently with grace. :)
so does she have the kid or wat???

Te Deum:
Pleni sunt caeli et terra
maiestatis gloriae tuae.
Te gloriosus Apostolorum chorus,
Te Prophetarum laudabilis numerus,
Te Martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus.
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets

Does anyone know the music during the wedding scene?
crowleysridgegirl 2 years ago
It's Te Deum (H. 146) in D major by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The part played at the wedding is "Pleni sunt coeli et terra"

I have not heard of him.I thought maybe Mozart or Handle.

Thanks for answering me.This is baroque music, right? Very dramatic. Was this similar to the music played at Prince Charles/Diana's wedding?
