the chassy can't get torn apart. what happens is that because of the fact that car is so light it pick up leverage also because the chassey is much stronger than the other car's because it doesn't absorb the impact. it looks bad obviously from the front of the smart but the structure is not compromised at all. the front window didn't even brake however the tritium cell really puts the other cars frontal integrity extremely vulnerable. i don't know if you noticed but that Mercedes benz's front
this car is soo strong and extremely safe. its better than most small cars out there today and even large SUV's from america such as the dodge fuckin' 'durango' :)
I saw recently online where a smart 450 was hit by two very large trucks and the driver walked away. The smart is a very safe vehicle. It is also designed to take advantage of the other car's crumple zone that it is impacting.
imagine if a huge cadillac escalade crashed into you when you are in your smart.. i am not saying that the smart is not safe, i am just saying that it has a small crumple zone. there are other cars that perform equally well in the iihs tests that have longer crumple zones
I'm saying this: For a very small car, this is extreme. If an ESV smashed into you, you would be dazzled and dizzy, but at least the dash won't swallow you up.
hmm, how would a smart perform if it was going at 20 miles per hour and the ESV crashes into it head-on? the only bad thing about the smart is that it has such a short crumple zone..
well, do you think that with such short crumple zones you won't be swallowed up when such a huge and heavy vehicle crashes into? i think i would take my chances with a civic or an accord
The body structure is extremely strong. Maybe if an Escalade is going at full speed, a Civic will be history, but a Smart will still survive, although it will likely get tossed away (this video explains). Youtube search "smart crash test", click on the first one. Strong.
I bet I could total a smart car hitting one at 30 mph in my daily driver. Those cars have no business being on the road they are light, small and easily pushed around by a car with a larger mass. I also saw a crash test of one on tv where they talked bout how the driver would have very sever injuries with a normal sized car traveling at 30 and the smart car traveling at 30 and hitting.
Appleweek, please don't take this the wrong way, I am not a troll or flamer or whatever. I am honestly curious,,,, Why do people replace "th" with "d", and misspell words? It really and truly makes people sound very unintelligent. I almost always ignore any comment which is spelled in such a manner.
No offense taken. Its just because FireDemon101 and I are from the Southern Caribbean where that's the vernacular of spoken English dialect down here commonly used.

Get the facts before making negative comments about the smart fortwo's safety!
Run a report on the smart car at the NHTSA site for proof!
Read the letters at safeandsmart dotcom for proof!
Example- F150 doing 45mph T-bones a smart car. Truck is totaled, smart driver is severely BRUISED!
Example- smart car doing 65mph hits a truck head-on. She breaks her wrist and WALKS AWAY!
More proof- auto insurance rates are low for smart cars, DUE TO THEIR SAFETY RECORD!

I would imagine if were hit by a normalsized car it would be pushed a little... which would take some of the force out of the impact.

Very, very safe! Smallest, safest! Wow, it's so light, the impact made it turn around and land further away!

longer crumple zones are usually better

I understand. But would you rather have crumple zones and get swallowed up, or have limited crumple zones but be in one piece?
