@williamgag I made a mistake, the Alice in the song is actually Régine's grandmother. But her mother is also dead, as she wrote to her blog "When I was growing up, we never had the money to return (to Haiti). Even if we had, my mother never could go back. Until she died, she would have nightmares about people coming to “take her away”. My mum passed away before she could meet my future husband, or see our band perform and start to have success"
@Hog4n That's kinda weird because last week I met this very nice lady at a dinner at my grandparent's house in Longueuil a retired english teacher that lived in Haiti and has "Chassagne" as a last name and that has the same fucking face like Regine xD
somehow the live version of this song is even more magical than the studio one...it's like some kind of sad & beautiful march into the afterlife (at least that's what the end makes me think of)
I hate your statement mr popenfresh... :( ... this song is terribly amazing. and for you to say that was rude. try to enjoy it :) even if it makes u feel sad. thats perhaps the songs' goal for you
@CBMCT Oh come on it was funny, TAKE A JOKE GUYS.
I forgot this is arcade fire real music and we can only be serious or declare love for the band making jokes NOT ALLOWED, DO NOT RUIN GREAT ART WITH LOWBROW HUMOURS?!
Arcade Fire have created a masterpiece with 'The Suburbs'. Its the kind of album that makes you fall in love with music all over again. There's not a weak song on it....it makes everything else being churned out nowadays almost irrelevant.
man all these comments about her singing.. i like her singing.. i dont know if the wobble is out of nervousness or just done on purpose.. but it works for her songs and i think its cool how she sings.. she stays in key
@redninja2010 Regine is a member of the band(the one singing), she normally plays piano/accordion. This song is about the death of her grandmother, and she sings it with such emotion, and that's why it's such a sad, richly emotional song.
@caffisc No! You are missing the point. The lyrics are about a brave but scared girl that had to grow fast against her will. Her voice reflects that, a girl that regardless her fear stands up
I know what you mean. Have you seen the version live @ Paradiso? That's my favourite version of this song but even there she doesn't manage to pull it off. Still an amazing performance though. I can't wait for them to hit the road again!
Could this also mean that everyone seems to be making decisions for her, and all that she knows to do is doing what others have told her to do; it's all that she knows. I've been learning to drive all my life... sitting in the back seat... because nobody will let her actually go where she wants, drive to wherever she wants. Some may feel angry about it, but she seems to ok for it at this time of her life... just a thought.
Their first album, Funeral, the liner notes the Arcade Fire refer to the recent deaths of several family members -- which explains why Funeral aches with elegiac intensity. Chilly imagery from this indie-rock band's native Montreal dominates the album, the band could have gone for a less direct title, but even then it would have been crystal clear: Funeral captures the agony and even ecstasy of surviving death all around you..... from Rolling Stone.
The song is about the death of her mother and how she was forced to take controll of her life at a young age and was un able to really leave choices up to somone els and just enjoy the landscapes of growing up. Atleast that's what I feel what it's about. I completely relate.
because if you read the lyrics to hati, wounded mother i'll never see. her mom died while trying to save her from the hati army. i heard that alice was her cousin.
@vanillasmile10 i am fully aware of that...some other user commented saying "this song is about Alice in wonderland" so i replyed, but that user deleted that alice in wonderland comment, so i just look like a dummy. Alice is Regine's mother.
Great song. Ghostly. Sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it.

@williamgag Nah, it's her mom, she died when Régine was 11 I think. She's the Alice referred in the lyrics.

@Hog4n well, her mom retired from that high school in St Lambert in 2000 or something xS

She definitely doesn't have a strong voice, but for this song, that vulnerability works for me. It's sort of a childlike thing, and it makes sense.
