  • Great song. Ghostly. Sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it.

  • Is it just me or does she sound better in this version than she does on the record?

  • @pianod00d I think your ears are right on that one.

  • It must be about her dad cause her mom is not dead.

  • @williamgag Nah, it's her mom, she died when Régine was 11 I think. She's the Alice referred in the lyrics.

  • @Hog4n well, her mom retired from that high school in St Lambert in 2000 or something xS

  • @williamgag I made a mistake, the Alice in the song is actually Régine's grandmother. But her mother is also dead, as she wrote to her blog "When I was growing up, we never had the money to return (to Haiti). Even if we had, my mother never could go back. Until she died, she would have nightmares about people coming to “take her away”. My mum passed away before she could meet my future husband, or see our band perform and start to have success"

  • @Hog4n That's kinda weird because last week I met this very nice lady at a dinner at my grandparent's house in Longueuil a retired english teacher that lived in Haiti and has "Chassagne" as a last name and that has the same fucking face like Regine xD

  • @williamgag Wow, that's weird :O Maybe she was her aunt? :)

  • lmfao mrpopenfresh is such a fucking idiot

  • somehow the live version of this song is even more magical than the studio one...it's like some kind of sad & beautiful march into the afterlife (at least that's what the end makes me think of)

  • this is a masterpiece

  • This song reminds me a lot of my mum, who's here without being here... Pauvre maman!

  • beautiful

  • sounds as good as the studio version.

  • god almighty this is music

  • I hate your statement mr popenfresh... :( ... this song is terribly amazing. and for you to say that was rude. try to enjoy it :) even if it makes u feel sad. thats perhaps the songs' goal for you

  • @CBMCT Oh come on it was funny, TAKE A JOKE GUYS.

I forgot this is arcade fire real music and we can only be serious or declare love for the band making jokes NOT ALLOWED, DO NOT RUIN GREAT ART WITH LOWBROW HUMOURS?!

  • Arcade Fire have created a masterpiece with 'The Suburbs'. Its the kind of album that makes you fall in love with music all over again. There's not a weak song on it....it makes everything else being churned out nowadays almost irrelevant.

  • @mrpopenfresh No, it's about Régine's mother dying

  • madre mia! que grupazo! severa cancion!

  • Arcade son los mejores!! gran banda!!

  • This must be heart breaking for Regine every single time she plays it... she's amazing <3

  • Definitely one of the best songs on the album, if not the best.

  • This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard in my entire life........ Makes me cry every time..

  • god, they are so TALENTED!

  • damned incredible

  • Her voice is just so amazing. I love her distinct style.

I just adore Arcade Fire in general. Haha

  • why do I cry everytime I hear this song ? :/ this song is so beautiful ...

  • @NS222 i can't help crying every single time i hear this song either. these people make my life complete.

  • Here voice reminds me of Bjork. I love it!

  • Aw Jeremy!

  • Regine is magic!!

  • thank you bluelighttalarm for the post ... you must see their last song in rock en seine 2010 in the rain !!

  • its about her mother right...anyway its probably the most beautiful song ive ever heard.

  • god, her voice is beautiful.

  • man all these comments about her singing.. i like her singing.. i dont know if the wobble is out of nervousness or just done on purpose.. but it works for her songs and i think its cool how she sings.. she stays in key

  • @redninja2010 Regine is a member of the band(the one singing), she normally plays piano/accordion. This song is about the death of her grandmother, and she sings it with such emotion, and that's why it's such a sad, richly emotional song.

Glad to know there's another fan, though.

  • @redninja2010 If you don't know the answer to boh of those questions, you don't need to be looking at this video or listening to this song

  • She sings like Bjork.

  • this song is one of those songs that just makes me cry.

  • I am amazed!

  • comics. com/peanuts/1972-08-06/

check out the parallels between this song and this peanuts strip.

  • @liambf that's awesome.

  • editor's a knob. however, what a brilliant song

  • She definitely doesn't have a strong voice, but for this song, that vulnerability works for me. It's sort of a childlike thing, and it makes sense.

  • I love this song, but her voice is messy. :( I absolutely love the lyrics and though.

  • @caffisc No! You are missing the point. The lyrics are about a brave but scared girl that had to grow fast against her will. Her voice reflects that, a girl that regardless her fear stands up

  • I perfer the album version but this is still great regardless

  • that part at 3:39 is amazing in the studio version but she can never seem to put as much force when she does it live.

but its probably super hard to sing live

    she's still amazing nonetheless

  • i mean 3:38

  • I know what you mean. Have you seen the version live @ Paradiso? That's my favourite version of this song but even there she doesn't manage to pull it off. Still an amazing performance though. I can't wait for them to hit the road again!

  • when are they going on tour cuz I've always wanted to see them

  • They're in the studio now apparently so either later this year or early next :-D

  • can't wait

  • @BeardedGlory they're on tour right now

  • can't help but check their website every 2-3weeks hoping a "ok our album will be out tomorrow and we're back on road , yesterday! kthanksbye" :(

  • That's my favorite part!!! So powerful!

  • Could this also mean that everyone seems to be making decisions for her, and all that she knows to do is doing what others have told her to do; it's all that she knows. I've been learning to drive all my life... sitting in the back seat... because nobody will let her actually go where she wants, drive to wherever she wants. Some may feel angry about it, but she seems to ok for it at this time of her life... just a thought.

  • What's the story behind this song? Someone died you say!?

  • Their first album, Funeral, the liner notes the Arcade Fire refer to the recent deaths of several family members -- which explains why Funeral aches with elegiac intensity. Chilly imagery from this indie-rock band's native Montreal dominates the album, the band could have gone for a less direct title, but even then it would have been crystal clear: Funeral captures the agony and even ecstasy of surviving death all around you..... from Rolling Stone.

  • On In the Backseat, Chassagne sings of having to grow up faster than she wanted to after deaths in her family.

  • thanks man... i like em enough to want to know that ;-) so thanks

  • The song is about the death of her mother and how she was forced to take controll of her life at a young age and was un able to really leave choices up to somone els and just enjoy the landscapes of growing up. Atleast that's what I feel what it's about. I completely relate.

  • This is literally one of my favorite songs ever. Thanks for the insight into its meaning to Regine!

  • I love this song because it is such a lovely song and i really, really feel sorry for her!

  • Arcade Fire is brilliant. Srsly, I cannot find a more wonderful sound of music or a better group of people to play it.

  • someone asked me in the pub last week to name me the band of the 2000,s

    haha no question!!!!

    the Fire by a mile

  • because if you read the lyrics to hati, wounded mother i'll never see. her mom died while trying to save her from the hati army. i heard that alice was her cousin.

  • alice was actually her grandmother.

  • her mother died in hati alice was a family member.

  • this is the most poignantly beautiful song i know.

  • This gets me every time. So pretty.

  • So beautiful. I'm crying right now.

  • this is visceral in the most gentle of ways. régine, régine... *sigh*

  • Heck yes, I listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic on NPR.

    Heck no, I missed this.

  • is "alice" a reference to alice in wonderland?

or some sort of implication that death can attack imagination?

    or something else

  • Alice was Régine's mother

  • @bluelightalarm

I did not know that, and I'm a huge AF fan.

I started crying right when I read that. So sad!

  • yeah she wrote this song after her mother Alice who died in a car crash.

  • Comment removed

  • @cousins851 Alice does not mean Alice in Wonderland.

  • @vanillasmile10 i am fully aware of that...some other user commented saying "this song is about Alice in wonderland" so i replyed, but that user deleted that alice in wonderland comment, so i just look like a dummy. Alice is Regine's mother.

  • ...even my 7yr. old girl loves this song: it pushes all the right buttons...it's magic

  • some times win sounds so pathetic which makes it even that much better. damn i love this band.

  • poor alice!

  • one of the best songs of all time i think, this is magic

  • The girl can sing!

  • Thats the best thing I've ever heard. Hands down.

  • zomg, i knoe you.

  • This song makes me so sad...

    so beautiful, poor regine =(

  • @musicman3230 ugh i accidentally voted it down!! can i change it?

  • @Andykun713 that really does happen eh? that made me smile
