  • Joni herself, Tina with Herbie Hancock, or Melody with Herbie, you have to admit this is one of the best jazz songs of the last half of the 20th century.

But for my money, nobody does Joni like Joni.

  • Oh, boy, I love this song... So... Sensual...

  • as pat matheny said in the liner notes of jaco,s reissued debut album.jaco was the greatest jazz musician of the late 20th century1 I concurr! wcf

  • JONI M. is great and ....

  • icon of icons

  • And one other thing;

Damn, I miss Jaco. What a musician!!!!

  • As to the Tina Turner comment, I will say that even Tina phrases like Joni on that particular rendition. You can still tell that the song is Joni's. My voice is all over it!!!!

And this must be the "Shadows and Light" band, same as on the VHS, but this looks like a different performance venue. Anyone know where the other one was filmed?

  • How on earth can anyone with ears prefer Tina Turner singing this song?????!!!!!

  • Joni Mitchell herself has said that she enjoys Tina Turner's rendition.

  • But sorry, they are all genius here... :)

  • Lyle Mays on keys... Lyle the genius.

  • I love Lyle :)

  • what a musician...

  • Sublime!

  • Hi superunknown373. Michael Brecker was also there...

Thanks for posting it, even after 2 years...

  • this song gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it...especially live...she is amazing...i hope she gets well!

  • just imaagine the way of joni mitchell like foto model she looks like an angel in hers early days and now she has beauty and talent but she always want to be just as she is nothing else then songwriter and painter

  • Very nice song but from 0:51 to 1:02 is pure groovy!!! Wow!

  • I love that Woman. I wish I could meet her once. And I mean, what an incredible all star band !! wow !

  • She is a legendary visionary. Songwriting skills like hers come about once every million years. I wish her good health. *(thank you for this video superunknown)

  • I beg to differ, this version has so many musical layers, along with JM's vocals. You have some of the best jazz artist on keys (Lyle Mays) and guitar (Pat Metheny) and bass (Jaco Pastorious). All these musicians are legends in their own right, and to come together on this gig...amazing!!

Best Version of Edith and Kingpin (hands-down!)

  • the smooth bass lines of the late Jaco Pastorius...love it.

  • Her guitar's an Ibanez George Benson. PS Great gig

  • what is the guitar of joni?

  • I love Joni Mitchell, she is one of the best songwriters ever, even Herbie Hancock realised this. She is awesome. I have loved her since I was a young girl. There are some great versions of this, but Joni does her own music best. Great stuff. Love Ronara

  • First I thought sacrilege! But now, cheers for introducing me to Melody Gardot!

  • The sound quality of the performance is unbelievable.

  • The CD is also incredible audio quality!

  • I was lucky enough to see Joni Mitchell with Pat Metheny band LIVE. Wow! I have always loved Joni with a passion as she knows a woman's heart to the tee,

Love this woman, just love her forever,

    Rebecca

  • "The band sounds like typewriters."

Has she been listening to Kanye West?

  • Its pobably the opposite my friend

  • Comment removed

  • She cannot gowrong with the band, because they are The Pat Metheny Group.

    Beautiful!

  • For me , this is the summit of man/womenkind´s achievements maybe the Space Shuttle comes second or so..

  • without trying to cause any hater hysteria, this is a cool acoustic thrill however i kindda prefer melody gardots' rendition. this is very soft and has some really nice notes but Melody's is soft and more engaging. (in my opinion)

  • ahh with Herbie Hancock? That version is amazing, but both have their place in history.

  • Absolutely the best, no discussion about it

  • I adore her, because she's so natural!

  • i'm 24 years old and she's probably 90 but i'd marry her, at least propose if she walked down my neighborhood.

  • She's about 65 I think. :)

  • Gee, this woman is just incredible. I love her !!!!

  • With a backup band like that she could hardly go wrong could she? Which isn't to say that she would have gone wrong without them.

  • Pat was OK - have played a few bum notes in a few passages there. Joni, Jaco and Lyle were right on the money, and how excellent was that ending with Jaco doing an inverted 3rd..(I think).

  • i see her whole life here.

  • What can I say, I love her!

  • Joni and Jaco and Pat -- this was quite an outfit -- one and only -- still resonates despite the passage of time.

  • and Lyle Mays.

  • and Don Alias

  • absolutely, don't forget Lyle

  • This is like her Woodstock, beautiful!

  • Ms. Mitchell's visual & aural stage presence is absolutely overwhelming. That short look into the camera at 03:46 is breath taking. Can you spell "repeat button"?

  • What does it say? I cannot rid the feeling this song is about Herself.

  • You were so totally blessed to have seen this live, what amazing talent all on one stage, joni and pat and jaco, what luxury, thanks for the post...

  • Gorgeous

  • Oh! Joni ¡que bien cantas mi amor!

Esto no se repite jamás escritora poeta intérprete compositora...vaya talento!

El bajo de Jaco Pastorius ohhh! una de mis piezas favoritas!

    5 estrellazas!

  • the best was the early 80's........

  • Where was this? France perhaps? tia

  • Berkely California, I was at this concert.

    Amazing, Beautifull, God Blessed..............

  • It was at Santa Barbara Bowl, which I assume is in Santa Barbara. LOL

  • What would you expect?, a bass player who changed the history of modern bass playing and a guitarist who has won 17 grammies. This is even crazy :P

  • plus strains of Michael Brecker coming through the snow and the pinewood trees :~)

  • You think? :-) Metheny and Jaco, among others.

  • i really wish she would play live again somewhere again, ilove her music!

  • "i really wish she would play live again somewhere again, "

God bless her, her smokes and her booze have turned her soprano 1 into a tenor 2...

  • Teddy, She just played in a little theater here in Campbell California 4m months ago for 2 hrs, she talked about her preferrence to play smaller menus

  • venues ;)

  • wish there was some more fotage of the band.. otherwise.. superb video

  • I dare not look away...

  • maravilhoso!!!!!

  • ...genius

  • way better than the studio version

  • waaaaay better indeed!

  • She´s the best...!

  • Is this at Wolf Trap in Virginia?

  • No, it's in Santa Barbara.

  • No it was Berkley California, I was at this concert...Amazing, Beautifull !!!!

  • Amazing concert! Even the audience looks gorgeous! All that naked skin and late 70s vibe!

  • Is this concert on dvd? I would love to have a copy.

    Please tell me if so.

Joni is perhpas my all-time favorite female singer/songwriter. She,K.D., and just a few others.

    Thanks

  • Yes, it's called Shadows and Light and is the best live performance DVD I've ever seen. Buy it and enrich your life.

  • Confession: some 30-odd years ago, I gave birth to this song; as dark as the lyrics are, the solid beauty of this melody was the only thing that soothed me through labor (I'm told I threatened to murder my hubby at one point :-P ). I'm so glad to have this along with the Tina/Herbie homage. (a bow of gratitude to all responsible including superunknown373 for posting)

  • PERFECT!

  • I like this as well as the Herbie/Tina version. Both are awesome. Is the original album version posted?

  • please someone tell me why she need's george benson signature guitar and jazz legends like pastorius and metheny ? and why did hancock recorded her songs....

  • are you seriously asking or just being ironic? Joni doesn't need anybody, those guys WANT to play for her and record her songs, you figure out why...

  • Great answer.....they want to play with her, she is the true "lady of the lake". Her grace, beauty and talent are what have driven her for decades, there is also a album coming out soon with 10 other talented musicians playing a tribute album to her. Check her web site......peace

  • So simple: the best for the best

  • The words to this song are HEAVY. WOW! Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny, Don Alias, Jaco Pastorius. Too bad she couldn't find anybody good for the band. LOL

  • thank you SO MUCH for uploading all these videos:)

  • in the beginning when we see the crew, we can reconize Jaco's sound since the first note, what a man !

  • Jaco really sets this song off, you're right on. It's amazing that he wasn't involved in the original recording. A wonder how he makes this composition sound like his own !

  • the passed over girls are conferring....

    i love this song

  • Thank you for posting this. I love this song.

  • Tina Turner, George Michael ? No way.

Actually the best version was the Album version (w/ The LA Express?)The lead-out is mezmerizing (also featured Graham Nash , David Crosby , James Taylor, Larry Carlton , and John Guerin) . This is just one of those songs that falls into a node; a place that no one can re-create like the original...like when Stevie Wonder releases a song. It is forever unique in its created version.

  • I love this live version with Joni, Pat & Jaco, but I agree w/you that the album version on "Hissing of Summer Lawns" is the best: the music, written by Joni, is some of the most beautiful & haunting Jazz/Pop ever heard, and those lyrics, also written by Joni, are so perceptive, descriptive, poignant. (Who writes like this today?...no one, except Joni, herself. Most pop music today is repetitive & bland and passes for "good", IMO. Kudos to Herbie 4 Album of the Year: due 2 Joni's music!

  • WHAT a Band!

  • I keep coming back here again and again. This is so good, so touching. Bravo Joni and all musicians on stage. And thanks for posting it.

  • it's incredible, no? sublime, poetry, popular music at it's best. ( pop music is not a prejorative term). good, better, best, pshaw! herbie, wayne, and tina doing this is just affirmation of what we can achieve and share together. beauty

  • yes, popular indeed - look at that rapt audience! we are all connected through music.

  • isn't it a beautiful thing ? I've been learning this version and the tina-wayne gem, and i feel blessed to be a musician and be enchanted by a creation that is so unique and so ancient in the resonance of our collective soul. Good, better, best does not matter, but Tina's performance is indeed a special moment in our great tradition. I love you-tube and you all, my tribe that get it.

  • has anyone heard tina turner sing this ? its awesome as hell ! tinas version is way better !!!

  • I´ve only recently come across this song by Herbie Hancock´s version of it with Tina Turner which completely overwhelmed me. Joni is still there to be discovered for me. Edith and the Kingpin with these musicians is divine. So sad, so beautiful, so strong.

  • She is one of the giants of our era (in my opinion) and I wish my music was of the quality so as to claim her as an influence...her work has been (and still is) a major positive influence in my life...thanks Joni!

  • so beauty so subliminal so gooooood

  • So So Sublime. She's appears to me like an angel. During this period she was not only sweet as usual but sexier than ever, physically and musically. Truly one of the people I wish I'd known personally

  • No one can write lyrics and music and sing and play like Joni Mitchell...She is a magnificent, ridiculously talented, true original, completely gifted!....This is one of my favorites of her, just a sublime song.

  • OH WHAT WOULD I GIVE FOR HAVING BEEN PRESENT AT THIS MUSICAL EVENT . . . WITH PAT . . . & JACO . . . & LYLE . . . & MICHAEL . . . & DON . . . I NOW LIVE 5 MNUTES FROM THIS AMAZING VENUE (Santa Barbara Bowl)

THIS IS WHY HOME THEATERS WERE CREATED . . .

  • I used to do live sound work years ago in the Miami area and yes, I assisted on a couple of shows for Jaco("The Birthday Concert"CD) He was a character and a bit mischievous, but he played unlike anyone else, truly a unique visionary soul...

  • Yes, Joni is simply sublime, as usual. So talented that all I can do is give thanks for her music. I love the way she's looking upward and grooving at 00:59

  • Why do so many dead beats who make no contribution to society have to make insulting comments about un-presidented talent.

Nothing comments from nothing people...as usual.

    For god's sake grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sublime

    'he tilts their tired faces

    gently to the spoon..'

'hissing of the summer lawns ' a seminal album

    thank you for the music...

  • That was just breathtaking....I am really touched. I did not appreciate this when it came out and today I can only sit here in awe at these artists.

  • My fave rendition of this song, either by Joni herself or others. :)

  • Joni was like a god to music, many musicians today, pay respect to her ,she was and still is a pioneer ,esp. back then ,modern music is not like it, when Joni,Neil,GuessWho-Burton-Bachman,Gordon,etc.got hold of the world.

  • The chance to see Joni Mitchell on these YouTubes is like dying and going to heaven.

  • Another person who thinks he/she is a sophisticate because they know the name of jaco pastorius. How tiresome.

  • Herbie and Tina do this one however their version is a C+. so0000 smooth jazzit with Tina a hint of what her voice is capable of. Tina gets close, but she's still singing "Private Dancer". Edith is with a pimp-like character spooning her dope you don't walk, you slowly fall on your face and realize you can't get up. Joni gets into that space, what it feels like to swoon and give in. Ya, dope is bad, and the bad guy is bad, but it feels OK. Joni delivers.

    Check out Joni's version ...

  • Ma chanson préférée de ma chanteuse préférée .

  • Muy bien hecho superunkdown por postearla!

Felicitaciones deveras, aunque lo van a sacar nuevamente, dee tener derechos reservados(espero no)

Oh! Joni ¡que bien cantas mi amor!

    vaya talento!

    una de mis piezas favoritas!

    5 estrellazas!

    wuaoo!

  • Tina Turner is covering this song on the new album of Herbie Hancock,River, the Joni Letters. (release 25sept.) I'm curious but still Joni is the BEST!

  • yes she has done a version of this, look on my videos and you can see her version if you are curious, it is very good but you can make your own mind up on that
