He loves to come to New Orleans and he attended a wedding from some very good friends also in the music business, Shmuela and Ira Padnos. @ATFrez the writer of the song is lost to history, it did first appeared in sheet music with pretty much the same lyrics in the late 1890s. i have heard, and there are several recordings of it between 1901-1920, . some are done quite operatic or to the standard ragtime tempo and quavering tenor style of singing of the WWI period. got it's first bit of fame in the late 30s by Leadbelly, not much fame, but enough to be found on records and revamped by the Animals in the 60s.
