the phalanx were doubled up, each side had 2 units of 3 rank deep men. That way (by having the second unit mashed into the first) you have 6 rows of spears jutting instead of the 3 you would have if you had only 1 unit 3 or more ranks deep (only 1st 3 ranks put spears forward).

@RoyalAnarchist Prince has a very good noob square destroying tactic. First he charges with his infantry from all sides, then, he charges with his cavalry. The infantry keep the spears at bay, and, being immobile, the spears really can't do much against an extra wave of attackers while being attacked by another, even if the extra wave is cavalry. If you notice at 7:26, the pikes' spears are all unorganized, and, so, ineffective against any unit.

@Colest503 welll im not pom but.. first of all florins are in medeival tthe money in rome is denarii. foresters are EXTREMEly expenise.. and they are the only archers for the gauls.. gold gold upgrades foresters ar eliek 1700 denarie each. and pom plays 15k battles so yea. not alotta money for them. and i think gauls are underrates

@HavingFunProduction Well 15k would explain it but the Foresters without upgrades are fairly cheap, 430 denarii. They are so much better than Skirmishers it's not even funny.

I have decent success against Greek factions with the Gauls but any Cavalry-based factions (Parthia, Seleucids, etc.) and any faction with Legionnaires almost always had an advantage over me. Light Infantry are good for little more than flanking ranged units and their heavy infantry can't stand up to Legionnaires.

I had a dude use nothing but 4 Spartan and 4 normal spearmen and a couple bowmen. I was fortunate enough to have chosen an army of nothing but Horse Archers and Hillmen. Spent 5 minutes shooting the crap out of his noob circle and when it broke, the Hillmen rushed out of the tall grass and ate up what was left.

Im not very good at this tactical stuff,but couldn't the other guy inside his noob circle put archers in the middle to shoot you,put a large unit of soldiers with their melee weapons to attack around the archers in case the defense is broken?

On the other hand if the melee defense is broken than the archers would be killed.

He could also save about 2-4 units of melee weapon soldiers with their swords to surround you when the archers are being attacked.When your back is turned he could shoot

But personally I think they should take the Shogun II style (smaller game; clan based; etc) and just take it to a different region. Like Britania, the Baltics, Africa, etc. Something like that you know?

I faced something like this in barbarian invasion. I was the huns and the other dude was the celts. i had 3 groups of horse archers left but they all had less than 20 men and the other guy had 1 unit of fresh untouched spears or something and formed into a circle(it was the unit's ability) i surrounded them and charged i was extremely lucky and they routed :)

when i ever play any total war game i use sword and shield, my infantry is the shield taking any attacks and my cav dishing out the damage from flanks or just a full frontal charge, then my inf moves up to join the fray.

The noob circle is something which unless you have a legit stratagy, is almost impossible to unlock. Phalanx units on all sides just stop you flanking or charging the units, while killing you with their spears. Without archers or superior pikemen, they are hard to beat. PoM can win any battle though, no matter the difficulty.

Yeah, flaming is good, just need to aim for the unit which isn't facing you. Also, most people who make noob circles won't allow you art or ele, or they wont make the circle.

Gaul is definately my favorite faction. Just get a main battle line of 6 warbands and have a few columned groups of heavy infantry behind em and when you pin their line you bring the columns around their back on both sides :D

The reason a lot of people lose to the supposedly "weak" ones are that they underestimate them. The base infantry will break pretty easy against a phalanx if you don't flank them in time, same goes against civilized heavy infantry.
