Answer me this (someone). Has there ever been a right handed-left footed open handed drummer, who plays open on a left handed kit??? Every and I mean EVERY open hander I've seen has played left handed on a right handed kit. Weird...
@Hitmanfan91 i'm sure there is, somewhere out there! i've heard of one, but honestly, i would imagine they're hard finds. the reason i chose open handed on a righty set is not only because i prefer leading with the left, but the practicality. almost every drum set you find will be righty. so being an open handed player, i can play all of those sets. being open handed on a lefty set kind of kills the practicality, don't you think? like my roommate, who plays a lefty guitar... screwed!!
@wigzateguitar open handed is when you can lead with either hand which makes for ultimite creativity possibilities and almost no restrictions of what you can do.
anybody here play a mix of open-handed and traditional?
i.e. hi-hat on left, leading with left, but, ride cymbal on right leading with right.
basically, anything to your left you play with your left hand, and anything to your right you play with your right. i've been using this technique since i started (about 8 months ago) and it's made playing so fun and challenging.
open-handed drumming is only 2 letters away from open-minded drumming.
Started playing drums open handed (left handed) for about 3 and a half years.
Started playing with right about a year ago and It's been the best decision I have made to pursue my drum playing. It's helped me so much co-ordination wise.
@Timmememememeh just wondering, do you have trouble playing hi-hat-heavy beats (like the beats from arctic monkeys 'view from the afternoon' or 'brianstorm')?
i can play it but it feels kinda awkward, especially at high-speeds
btw, this is playing it right-handed (hitting snare with right).
Hi, I saw another video in which it was apparent that your side snare (and maybe even your main snare) was a musashi. What size are you using for that one? It appeared to be a 10 inch, but I wasn't sure.
I normally find drum-solos to be quite a bore, but this was great. Had great groove, which is what drumming is to me. Awesome technique that makes me want to be a better player.
I play open handed because it feels natural, but I've never really understood the bodily mechanism which makes a drummer open handed. I cannot cross my arms and play; it's like trying to write left handed.
I considered getting pro marks actually, I got Vater instead. I love those, feel like air in your hand, with just a wonderful feel to them while playing. But I need some larger sticks for playing hard rock stuff. I'll definitely take Pro-Mark into consideration.
to all you Sabian haters out there.

Hey! Awesome drumming!
Does anyone know if this guy is right or left-handed? I'd really like to know.
SonorPhonics 2 years ago
one thing is for sure. he is ambidextrous. that's what you achieve in open handed drumming with ride still on the right.
lordlors 2 years ago
I wonder how it would turn out if I tried out mastering this as the regular right-handed drummer I am...
SonorPhonics 2 years ago
if you do that, you will strengthen your left hand in drumming.
lordlors 2 years ago
Well, that's pretty obvious:) Maybe this is a better way to put it:
How long would it take?
I'm just reflecting over the subject while sharing my thoughts with you :D

Hey, if you're interested in a good pair of sticks, you should try a pair of Pro-Mark 747 Rock sticks or Pro-Mark 747B Super Rock.
I use those, and they are AMAZING!
