The child was in no real danger unless the animal felt cornered. The next thing the lizard (not a komodo, no resorts there, probably a varanus varius in australia) would have done is probably run. However, the girl wasn't just being whiny, the tip of the tail is very long, thin and hard. The tip of a monitor's tail is very thin and long, like I said, and would be very hard to see on this video, but you can definitely hear it hit.
