Warning label: Do not apply more than 3 gallons of hair gel in force 3 gale. Seriously, a brilliant performance. Saw the concert live, it was amazing. The Damned were brilliant (the others were good too, especially the Quo, but this is the band that truly took Liverpool by storm).
Saw them for my 18th last night, well chuffed when they played this! Obviously not in quite as epic proportions but bloody hell, I had a good time. I even got to meet and chat with Vanian afterwards too. Love him! <3
i really loved this song and this performance from the docks was breath taking! thank you for bringing back memories of a time when music was worth listening to!
I so loved this song and thought the performance at the docks was breath taking!! Thank u for bringing back memories of a time when music was actually worth listening to!
Lol..I've listened to Barry's version and while I'm sure he appealed to the girls in his day, his version was far too meek and whiney for my liking. Dave takes this song and soars with it. What's more he can still belt it out today, long after Barry's voice gave out.
Still makes my knees go weak, ever since I went backstage and had an impromptu drum lesson with Rat Scabies at Rock City, Nottinngham. Bloody fantastic :) x
God I love this soooooo much - fell in love with this song the instant i heard it back in 86 - vowed if I had a girl she would be named Eloise - it took 3 boys and 13 years but i got her - MY DARLING ELOISE MARY-CHRISTINA TRACEY - this song is for you princess xxxx
To commemorate the rejuvination of the Liverpool Docks and (what was hoped) the start of the revival of Liverpool, there was a huge rock concert on a floating platform. Each band had two songs max, I believe. Cameo, Status Quo, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and The Damned are the only bands I recall being there. I made an audio tape at the time, but it has since ceased to be. I remember hearing the studio version of Eloise not long after and thinking it flat and tinny in comparison.
why couldn't i have been around when all these brilliant bands were in there prime, when all this amazing was starting instead all of the frustratingly terrible music nowadays
me and my brother are goign to the gig on friday - carling acadmey not the fact we want to see them, yeh they would be good live but, its to pay respect to our mum.
October 1976 - me on my third day at Uni. weather shit ... so my friends said.. "theres a band on, the Damned, in our dining hall... so we went... Damian met me half way up the stairs before.. fully stage make up'd up. I was young ! he saw me and said "you all right mate !" after ... I couldnt hear for 3 days !! and they dont make bands like that anymore.. really they dont ! Punk ruined my university career and i wouldnt have missed it for anything !!
the damned, the alarm, billy bragg and the mahones are amongst about 40 bands appearing at the joe strummer festival in may 2009..check it out strummercamp festival
out of all the versions available of this song on youtube, this is undoubtedly the best!!!!!!!!!! Anyone know if this was from a full Damned show or was it one song at fest of some sort? Is a dvd available somewhere?
It was at a thing called Rock aound the Dock at the Albert dock In Liverpool. My cousin took me. They also performed Anything then lobbed all thier gear in the water !! Wonderful !
Rock Around The Dock featured a whole series of bands, most playing 2 songs, in part of a revival of Liverpool effort. Bands included The Damned, Status Quo, Cameo and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. I forget the rest and my audio tape of it got wiped.
This is up there with the best of all rock anthems - what a brilliant rendition of a superb song. The Damned were brave to take this on .... but it as well worth any risks involved as it is superb.
Whoever dreamt of combining The Damned with an orchestra should get massive credits for this work of art. This superb song has been made even better by their addition .. and outdoors too. Had this have been performed at the Live Aid show in 1985 it would have stole the show. Makes you wonder what other Punky numbers could be performed backed by an orchestra!
This is great. Scabies is really on form here. He went on to become a brilliant drummer and it still puts me off seeing the Damned cause he's not behind the drum stool anymore (mind you Jon Moss did a good job on the 77 tour with the Dead Boys)
I've seen the Damned and the Phantom Chords collectively over 10 times. Eloise is also my grumpy perfect cat's namesake. But THIS is the most freakin beautiful thing I've EVER seen!
Epic performance- reminds me of those gigs in Finsbury Park back in the mid eighties where my college m8 met an Italian girl in the crowd- they fell in love- got married and are still together- happy days...
Where is the footage of the rest of this concert? Would have loved to be there although I saw them in Chicago '98 and recorded an AUD DAT. Anyone interested?
The Damned were actually the first punk band to put out an album, they put their's out just weeks prior to The Sex Pistols. They were very pun in the 70s but have continually evolved throughout the past 3 decades...
