Kanye said he likes playing with auto-tune, it's fun for him, he's made the whole album like that because he wants to. That's what being an artist is about, doing what YOU want to do and not giving a fuck about what other people think. He's really brave for putting out that album despite what he new people would say.
through this auto-tune phase i see him as a conformist to the "in" and what the younger listeners of the spectrum are calling good music. which is a smart thing to do financially, but auto-tune is just like....theres something about it that makes music not seem as real or sincere anymore. i dont kno, i just never understood the point of it.
there is no way you can say auto tune isnt a phase. it started all with t-pain's buy you a drank and soon sprouted to many others simply because buy you a drank was such a popular song. most main stream artists nowadays definitely conform to what the people would prefer rather than do without the unnecessary things.
saying it is a phase is implying that it will pass soon. but its been around for years and is still striving. also, kanyes 808's and heartbreaks album had great emotion and artistic content. he was in no way capitalizing on the new "fad" of auto-tune. he genuinely liked the way it sounded.

Gangsta rap was in at the time and Kanye came and changed that plus the fact that other Indie acts such as Daft Punk also used Auto-Tune back in 2001 means that Auto-Tune has been here for a while it just took Young Jeezy to get Kanye to use it.

At some point, people forgot that music isn't always about delivering a message or being original. Sometimes, you make music just to have fun. And as someone with a little experience with it, AutoTune is mad fun to use.
I'll never get why people hate T-Pain or Kanye for what they did. If it's about mainstream, then the solution is simple...stop listening to mainstream. Dig around and find what you want, get an iPod or burn a CD and listen to what you want at your leisure.
