It seems you are having good results,thats great.I have leg edema due to active heart failure.Most times I can drain it at night,and it will go away for a few days.The itch that goes with the edema is a 10+ on the itch scale.I noticed your subject appeared to have similar scars on his legs that I have,from scratching.Any advice on the itch?
I used to have an extremely swollen ankle. It turned out I had ostyeomolitist a brodies abscess in my left ankles growth plate and had to have a "IAD Surgery" on my growth plate.
I expect the hammock isi helpful but would also urge any sufferers to see their GP/doctor first and promptly, if you don't know the cause of the swollen ankles have a check first cause it can be a sign of various serious problems which if left untreated can kill you. Once you've eliminated those possible causes by all means treat the symptoms for yourself with adaptations to your environment let your GP eliminate impending kidney/heart/etc failure first!!
@JoAshbethCoffey You are absolutely correct! I only show this video for the suggestion of HOW to keep your feet elevated during sleep AFTER your doctor has advised you to take that action AFTER you've seen him/her for an evaluation. I still take my heart meds every day and am very aware that I am still at risk for cellulitus.
OMG...I just typed in "swollen ankles" into the search and your video was the first to watch...that's what ...that is called? I've recently acquired this problem and my feet and ankles are just so uncomfortable, and when I massage them, it's really paining behind the ankles...why is that? But i would love to see the bones and my ankles again...!!!
For those who comment that "simply raising the legs above the heart will take care of edema" I say, "I have tried couch cushions, pillows and a foot stool under my legs in bed at night. I always kick them off. I do not have time to lay on the couch all day with my legs up on the arms. Putting my feet up on my desk while I work is terrible for my back." So I bought a Mayan banana hammock. I've slept in it for almost 15 years and my legs are healthy. Why does that upset you?This may help someone.
My friend had strep A in his legs. Strep A causes your blood vessels and your lymph vessels to become "leaky". All day long, blood and lymph fluid leak out into the surrounding tissue causing his legs to swell. The resulting pressure squeezes down on the blood vessels in his legs, ankles and feet causing the blood and oxygen flow to dwindle.
In addition, a back surgery left him with paralyzed calf muscles (the muscles that help move blood back up to the heart). The hammock still works for him.
Yes, and that is what the doctors told me to do. However, when I tried pillows under my legs (like they suggested) I would invariably kick them off the bed within minutes after going to sleep. The hammock keeps my legs tucked inside the edges and up above my head.
I have lymphoedema in my feet, ankles and calves. Would one of these hammocks be helpful to me? I live in Sydney, Australia. Where could I purchase one of these devices. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.
Google "therapeutic hammocks" or go to the website with that name. I called the company and they would charge $50 for shipping to Australia. Go ahead and buy the hammock you want and they will contact you about the extra shipping.
Therapeutic hammocks cradle your legs and feet so they stay elevated while you sleep. Regular hammocks (with wooden bars) don't elevate the legs enough and they let your feet fall to the side while sleeping. Plus their heavy ropes create pressure ridges that stop the fluids from flowing out of your legs. Therapeutic hammocks have thousands of strings that create NO pressure points so you sleep soundly and awake refreshed. The banana shape of therapeutic hammocks also helps sciatica and stenosis.

this is simply raising the ankles for a long period of time, that allows blood flow from the ankles to the rest of the body dispersing the swelling.

that works,
unless you have a DVT, superficial thrombophlebitis, Milroy's disease, Metastatic Cancer, lipidemia, thyroid disease, cellulitis, complex regional pain sydrome (CRPS1), compartment syndrome, charcot foot or venous insufficiency.

@MarkKingCurtis
just raising the legs above heart will work as well as buying a hammock.
