The problem of the today's animes is their plots. DBZ manga was nice, but the plot was still average. The tofay's animes are giving more importance only to the action, the adrenaline; and that's why Evangelion is (to me) the best, because it has a lot of emotion (at least in the first episodes) AND an excellent plot, with a psychological background. That's why I love it!

This music is almost a representation of how simple and basic Rei really is in terms of emotion and humanity. She's just one or two bits of music. No more, no less. She's extremely intelligent and has so many thoughts, but has nothing to do with them.
@Seraph821 Rei III is great both in Shinji's dream world and out of it. In Shinji's dream world, she's a genki-girl, which automatically makes her hilarious. Seeing her say "Oh crap!" in a regular voice is hilarious. In the real world, she's just awesome. She's the only person in the entire show's continuity to stand up to Gendo. "I will not be a puppet for you to control" is a great moment as she decides to do Instrumentality her way, which is great, as Gendo tastes failure for the first time.

I haven't watched this since I was 14. I'm 19 now. This anime had such a profound effect on me when I was younger, it took watching it 3 times for me to get my head around it.

This song sends shivers down my spine. In fact all of Evangelion does. The animation, the story, and the music all combined, its one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed.
I feel like this is a creepy song with awkward notes that make you tingle. But at the same time, there are times where the music picks up a hopeful tone, only to go to the hopelessness again, where it goes up to hopeful again; like a never-ending cycle. A perfect way to represent Rei. Even more, this song is beautiful... Just like her.

NGE is considered a pioneer in anime drawing quality, and its generally accepted that since NGE anime drawing technique is stale and static. Khara, the studio thats producing rebuild movies, promised to.. "do" the anime community a favor and totally innovate the drawing style/technique :P
seriously before you even attempt learning a song by ear you should learn all the notes on the guitar and the names of all the strings and such, and understand octaves.

Yup, I think you're right that she eventually recognizes herself or begins to consider herself an individual that does not need to stay within the confines of what others prescribe for her. I like your idea about "thanatos" too. I think there are many interpretations. I think the maker of NGE meant to stimulate peoples minds and emotions in a abstract way so that everybody experiences different emotions/interpretations depending on their own psychological history.
I think she gives the misconception that she has no personality at first, that she is just a very obedient tool, but later on she shows human quality, hate, love, the need for pleasure and company. Were she a real human, the little 8 year old in me would love to be her hero, a quality very few women nowadays posses and a quality that enthralls me. We all dreamed of being heros, but cruel reality crushed that dream.
I don't know why this song makes me feel indescribeable... Not guilt, sadness, happiness or anything that's even comparible... just don't know. Maybe it's a kind of past life nostalgia...

Perfect song for Rei, a human created by other humans to be used as a tool. As a result she is a child with no sense of self, inner direction, desire, or longings. She molds to whatever role demanded of her. She is a tool used by an arrogant man. Very sad and sorrowful story.

wow, what a very insightfull look at Rei..... although Ive considered her a "thanatos" in carnate I dont think ive ever had something as indepth as what you said. Although she does recognize herself, watch the last episodes, or "in the case of rei ayanami" she establishes herself as a self.... regardless of that she still wishes for death : /.....

Yup, I think you're right that she eventually recognizes herself or begins to consider herself an individual that does not need to stay within the confines of what others prescribe for her. I like your idea about "thanatos" too. I think there are many interpretations. I think the maker of NGE meant to stimulate peoples minds and emotions in a abstract way so that everybody experiences different emotions/interpretations depending on their own psychological history.

I think she gives the misconception that she has no personality at first, that she is just a very obedient tool, but later on she shows human quality, hate, love, the need for pleasure and company. Were she a real human, the little 8 year old in me would love to be her hero, a quality very few women nowadays posses and a quality that enthralls me. We all dreamed of being heros, but cruel reality crushed that dream.
