Woo Hoo!!! I was at this show at the old Cleveland Colesium!! It was the first of two nights they played there. I also had tickets to see them in July in Pittsburgh but the show was cancelled due to the tragic death of Plant's 5 year old son! Thanks so much for posting this! Damn I remember that show like it was yesterday!
@Tony63909 I don't recall exactly, but I don't think anyone else sang at the Oklahoma City show anyway. I have a very faded Polaroid picture of them during this song. From what I can tell Plant & Page were upfront sitting on bar stools, Bonham is at the drums & Jones off to the side at keyboard. Theres no one else on stage in my photo.
i was at the opening night show at the garden in nyc on june 6th '77 and it was fantastic, a religious experience, i was 16 n had a first date with a doll, we got to our nosebleed seats n i said lets sneak down front, she said no and i said,SEE YA!!! i snuck all the way down right next to page, it was totally outragous, it blew my mind!!! i payed 6 dollars for the ticket, it was the best concert of my life, it spoiled me forever, i hold all shows up to that one, none has come close!!!
Oh I'm so jealous of anyone that got to see them in person. They never made it to Hawaii when I was stationed there and I saw some pretty good bands. They still sound marvelous to me!
It is so difficult choosing a fav instrumentalist from the Zep. I play the guitar so my biased response would have to be either JPJ or Page. I haven't had a chance to see Page live, but was fortunate enough to see JPJ rock out with TCV, and was blessed by his muisicanship. Hell, his keyboard ceased functioning cause Jonesy slayed the bastard!!! Rare moment but a sacred one I won't forget.
This clip is growing on me. Admittedly, JPJ does not get off to the best start, but it gets better as they go. This version has more depth and complexity than the one from the studio.
This is the best live version of this song that I have found by LZ. They sound like outdoor minstrels - really outstanding ones! If you just have to replace JPJ with a female singer, then there is a Plant & Page rendition of this song with a lady - Indian, I believe - which more closely replicates the studio version of this song.
@scandial The lady I was referring to can be seen/heard in the clip from 1994 Live with the Egyptian Ensemble and the London Metropolitan Orchestra. So on second thought, perhaps she was Egyptian rather than Indian.
@TheBiblical1234 You nailed it with the "outstanding minstrels" description. They always seem so medieval to me - even on the electric rock songs, but when they do this kind of fireside thing, it's almost scary how much it seems like some kind of time transport. I once showed some bootleg film of this song, from this tour, to a friend of mine who was very critical of everything. He was silent for a while, and then said "It looks like there are ghosts around them." He was right, I think...
@mielazul Thank you! Plant's lyrics sometimes referenced mythology and English history, which did contribute to their Old World feel. I bet you would love the book Led Zeppelin IV by Barney Hoskyns. He will transport you back to: 1) Bron-Yr-Aur which was the stripped-down Welsh cottage where Page & Plant "fell in love musically" and explored their acoustic side and 2) Headley Grange where they DID spend a lot of time fireside drinking tea and writing some of the most awesome music ever.
I saw 3 different Zeppelin concerts, and this is just one example of why I never liked them live - It was always frustrating to totally love their albums, and then, for example, try to get into this song, and Robert was putting no effort into it. The constant segues into other songs / incomplete songs in concert were another reason to not like their concerts.
I do NOT deny their musical genius (in a DECADE of geniuses), but, it was more album than concert.
@Chesty24MAU no offense bro, but if you've seen any performances of them live, they put more heart and soul into every song than other bands will do in a lifetime. i have NO IDEA what videos you have been watching of them, or live stuff you have been hearing from them, but it really is a shame
The concert sounded much better than what you are listening to here. I still love listening to anyway. But of course being there... ya know you just can't ever top it.
halolamer, I don't think there was anyone who wasn't ; ) Ya
You have to remember back in those days, parents let their kids do all kinds of shit. They trusted, and wouldn't have thought a 14 yr old girl would.....
@Emedil I bet if you were as high as half the ppl were at that concert you'd enjoy it. I agree JPJ isn't the greatest of singers, I think Bonham might have done a better job.
I love Led Zep with all my sould and heart but seriously this Battle of Evermore sounds really bad. John Paul jones doing choruses is awful. And Robert Plant's voice sounds much much lower that in the original recording ... don't like this live version unfortunatelly . But IT'S STILL MY FAVOURITE BAND EVER !!!!!
@wernerkonings It from the 4th Album, the one with Black Dog, Rock N Roll, Going to California, Misty Mountain Hop, Stairway, Four Sticks and When the Levee Breaks.
That's just incredible to think about how many classic Zep tunes are on this album. It's one of the greatest albums of all time.
I was at the April 3rd, '77 show at the Myrid in OK. City. The show supposed to be March 3rd, but was postponed to April 3rd because Robert was ill. Thought it would never happen. But the show was fantastic! I'll never forget it. I was just 14. I think this was just the 3rd show on this tour?? My ticket and a bus ride was only 36 bucks. I still have the stub.
The destroyer concert. I love it. I envy you, cause I was born 74. No chance to see them. I had a 50/50 chance to get a ticket for O2, but failed. Nevertheless: this gig in cleveland is brilliant. I love ten years gone too. If you are interested: listen to my band myspace . com / custardpies
@03news I have my dad's Vynil Record copies, and footage from when he followed the whole 77' tour. I still have his REAL tour shirt with the city names, not the crappy red remake, the grey and black one. He was at this show, and I DO have a video of it. Its just too old to post. So Yes, Footage DOES exist. Also, I have a Twin SG from 1969 and a Gibson Mandolin too Jim! Get at me! XD
