I'm sixteen and hapa (Japanese / Spanish) and I was always ashamed by it, growing up in Canada , I learned Japanese and lived there an now I love being hapa , im comfortable with my own skin and I wouldn't change any of it :)
My boyfriend is Japanese and I'm Canadian (white). He's planning to move out here to Vancouver and eventually we're going to have our own little Hapa baby! I was always curious to see how people would react to our baby. It seems there is a strong, proud Hapa community. I'm glad!
i love both sides and when people ask me what nationality are you? i go on this whole list and they're like....so half japanese? and i'm like full and they're like...half white? full white...WHAT???!!!! I'm not half of anything....I'm a human being
I feel bad for hapas that cant speak their language...like grandparents and stuff! and they cant embrace their culture!! like i love love love book-off and speaking japanese and stuff . you have to love every part of you
----------- why are asians talking about feeling ethnically repressed and treated differently because of their racial background YET using a HAWAIIAN word/term. You arent hawaiian.. why r u using a hawaiian word? Is there no asian word/term for half or part? Youre being racially insensitive while complaining about others being racially insensitive to you. --- btw.. im hawaiian, portuguese, japanese, venezuelan and the only person here who is actually HAPA.. since im hawaiian too.
@scorpiomooselove im not saying dont use a hawaiian word, its just weird that u arent using a asian word. Theres so many anti hawaiian videos because of this and the word hapa was never used to describe asians NEVER! It was used to describe half white, half hawaiian people. It wasnt a insult yet because of your movement complaining of racial insensitivity, people r being racially insensitive 2wards hawaiians. hope u get what u set out 2 get, even if it is at the expense of Hawaiians.
and plus hapa comes from english for half, so by ur standards are hawaiians no proud enough to use the hawaiian word for half? no. it's just the very word itself demonstrates how culture can change the meaning of words.
what about the terms hapa kamoa (samoan) or hapa pake (chinese)? that's in hawaiian, so doesn't that mean hapa means more than what ur complaining about?
We're equal parts(genes)of our Parents. We have the best of all cultures. We love our ancestries and cultures and languages, and foods. Period. We eat all kinds of ancestral foods asian and european, durrr.
I dont know why its a big deal, I'd love to be mixed, hapa. I think they turn out really beautiful. Look at vanessa mae, vanessa minello(or whatever Nick lackley's now girlfriend is called), vanessa hudgens, they're all happa. Sheesh and they all have the same first name!
but vanessa mae isn't hapa, she's half thai & half chinese. it's probably such a big deal because a lot of hapas grow up to look more like one side of their family, and can have identity issues.
for example, if you're 1/2 asian, raised that way and proud, it's really insulting if someone tries to argue with you about your heritage, because u know it better than anyone, and it's not fair for so many people to judge you based on how u look.
move to hawaii if you want to call yourselves hapa/mainlanders dont care what you call yourself and in hawaii you'd look like a local but sound like a haole lol!! haole mainlanders
I'm hapa as well. Half-flip tho but look forward to the documentary whenever it comes out. Great if you can post a link to a website where we can details of the launch+where to watch. I'll tell all my half japanese buds.
Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your uniquely Canadian experience. Hapas obviously have stories to tell and fresh viewpoints on both the past and the future of our multi-racial society. We eagerly await the release of your full documentary.
Impressive! As a Half-Japanese Canadian, I'm excited that you're sharing this Hapa-ness experience. I can't wait to see the entire production. This trailer really piqued my interest - great job!
the lady at 0.41 looks white and youd have to be mentally retarded if oyu think she looks asian.

As an Asian man I'm happy to see hapas with white mothers and Asian fathers. I hope the trend will increase. Best wishes.

Sadly, nobody really cares about people "being mixed". I'm mixed, but this video only has 7,000ish views :-(.

I'm sure it is easier if you come out more attractive. That's the roll of the fate dice, I guess. I do think the 'hapa' label is a little weird.

It's not such a big deal as they're making it out to be. Many half Japanese people identify more with their Japanese heritage.
