I'm in my second semester of taking Russian and we just watched this cartoon. It's considerably more depressing than American cartoons, although the animation style and story reminds me of something by Rankin Bass. Something really bothers me though; why is a factory portrayed as something bad? If this was allowed to air on Soviet television, wouldn't the regime have forced the creators to not criticize Soviet factories? Unless the factory is run by a capitalist, then it just makes no sense.

It means 'there were'. So yeah. It means we had them.
