By the way, hydrofluoric acid is not only highly corosive but also highly toxic. Fluorine gas is also a common product of hydrofluoric acid reactions with metals and things. So if you want to carry out this experiment, do it in a well ventilated outdoorsy place and make sure you aren't downwind, or carry it out in a fumehood like I do.
I get to do this every week (minus the fire part). I love my job.
Lithium metal (not often anymore, is the best anode though) which reacts explosively with water to produce hydrogen and burns violently, or graphite which is flammable, as the Anode electrode.
Typically LiPF6 electrolyte salt that produces hydroFLUORIC acid and hydrogenon contact with water.
The electrolyte solvent, which is highly flammable (the stream of fire you see was this solvent venting and burning)
A friend and i discovered this same thing using a cast-iron skillet with a burning mixture of melted candles and lighter fluid. Except we didn't have a spray bottle--we just spit in it and jumped back.
fucking hell man you people cannot be THAT STUPID he was freaking heating up some kind of OIL and poored in WATER! woooow you people amaze me! lets see how many haters i can get!
Next time some country needs a nuke for whatever reason, they can skip nuclear crap and just load up a capsule with cellphone batteries and small explosives...
@Hvdragonproduction lol it wud be amazing but 1 problem if you want to die do it because car batteries contain sulphuric acid which is very dangerous and wen in contact with fire the casing splits open and acid will spray all over you and your neighbours back garden and the other neighbours dog lol and it doesn't have li-ion power cells. with sulphuric acid flying out of it....... y dont u use hydroflouric acid the most dangerous acid in the world can burn through anything safety 1st
@Hvdragonproduction well most car batteries have lead electrodes, why not the biggest lithium battery you can find, and toss it into a pot of boiling water?
@shintsu01 I believe that the tesla roadster has laptop based batterie system so it will burn better than gasoline and lithium reacts with water so by by car lol
@Hvdragonproduction Partially right, I work at Tesla, the cells are extremely safe but naturally if you intentionally try to blow them up they will. In a car accident they are designed to vent and have many safety features that would prevent an explosion (you can google those). The battery system has no similarities with a laptop battery other than both use a lithium based compound.
Awesome! Imagining my laptop with 8 lithium cells... or cell phone going up in flames in my fucking pocket! and many other things can do the same or even worse..

Batteries have the following goodies:
Lithium metal (not often anymore, is the best anode though) which reacts explosively with water to produce hydrogen and burns violently, or graphite which is flammable, as the Anode electrode.
