it was built before Shah Jahan,by Rajputs.the name of it was Tejo Mahalaya, and it was a Hindu temple of Lord Shiva...but Sah Jahan converted it to memorial....
From what I read, the Mughuls treated the rice basket of India rather poorly. For example, the Arakanese people (of modern Burma) were pirating and capturing the Bengalis to be sold as slaves and the Mughuls rulers did put it to a stop. May be it was too costly to do it. Today, the descendants of those people (and other Muslims in Arakan region) are labeled illegal immigrants by the Burmese.

What? The Taj Mahal is the architecture embodiment of this life and of the next, ACCORDING TO ISLAMIC BELIEF? Rather the opposite. Islam teaches to be humble and share one's wealth, not spend so much money to make a building to show one's power. This must be the Mughuls' version of Islam
Stopped watching at the point where the documentary claims that Mughals brought Islam to India. Ever heard of the Sultanate? Time to go back to history books.
@nishitavideos Yeah, these days, I am very disappointed with these so called documentaries. In its topic "The Mughuls", The history channel called them nomadic tribe though by the time Babur came to Indian, those Mongol had been ruling central Asia and living via adopting the high culture of the Persians.

The center (where the tomb of Shah Jahan) is the holy of holies? According to who?

@786swe Correction: Not the tomb of Shah Jahan, but of Mumtaz Mahal.

This thirst for power must be from the blood of Mongols which must have been fueled with each success they'd made as they came out of Mongolia.
