Look at 0:56. Those bay windows were never split down the middle, with a party wall!!! The houses would've been twice as small!!! Where's the continuity man/woman, when u need them?!
@SiLoJayLo I discovered a while back that Paul was co-presenter of an early incarnation of Farmhouse Kitchen (with Mary Berry, who's now involved in Great British Bake off on BBC2) A snoop round the web showed me he'd made appearances on Coronation st., so a bit of digging on Youtube brought me here. Not sure when he started announcing on YTV - he could have done the intro to his own on-screen appearance, which would have been highly unusal.
Theres something different and more 'real' about these early episodes. They seem to feature everyday life goings on, and everyday life people. Its lost the plot now, murders, disasters, affairs every minute all down one little street. I know they wanted to make a statement with the 50th episode but that was over the top, PLUS they already had a tram off the viaduct disaster in the 60's, so it wasnt even original. People love it now simply because its familiar and been on so long.
Remember this very well, sadly Coronation declined in acting and quality late 90's, lost its sense of humour and plot lines, this was its golden time characters so believable and a great sense of humour. Stan & Hilda were just brilliant as a duo, a more innocent age.
the viaduct looks more convincing back then but it just dosent look convincing now because of the big build behined it if the viaduct stayed as it was like on the vid it would have been gud for the new tram crash plot
@chity75 I agree. Part of the reason for this is that this Street is actually not the Street set we see today. This was the original 'real' street (the early vesions were filmed inside,) This was a real street which was due for demolition, right on the doorstep of Granada studios. By the early1980's it was in bad repair so they built a 'new' version (1982) which we see today. Unfortunately, I've always felt its never looked entirely right.
@pluto1111777 - this was actually an earlier outdoor set that was built behind Granada. The railway viaduct was a real one and is still there - part of the museum now. You could look at the set through a window in the gate.
@doubledeckers thats true, thats what I was saying lol although it was actually a real street due for demolition (which was modified to match the shows requirements obviously). the street aswell as the viaduct were real. Thats why it looks more real than the set that was built from scratch which we see today.
from the 1970's onwards Granada had a set next to the studios, next to the Bonded Warehouse. Only the fronts of the houses were built. It definitely wasn't a real street. But it was built in front of the real viaduct.
A better set was built in a different position around 1981 and that's the one they use now.
If you go to:
images DOT manchester DOT gov DOT uk
search for Coronation Street you'll find a pic. The houses don't even have chimneys.
@aeronuk1 it was based on Archie Street in Ordsall, Salford, but that had a church at the end of the street, not a viaduct. Look up 'Archie Street' on Google for photos. Many of the outdoor scenes in the 1960's episodes were actually inside the studios at Granada TV. The first outdoor set was just the hardboard scenery taken outdoors and put up in front of the real viaduct. which only lasted for a year or so, then they built the fronts in brick. Then the current set in the early 1980's.
@chity75 - that's because it was a real viaduct with an outdoor set built in front of it. It was part of the world's first passenger railway station at Liverpool Road and is still there. The steam train at the museum goes along it.
Corranation Street was better back then 2day the stories are so bouring people having affairs ects I don't watch the show much these day but looking at soaps page in the Radio Times & TV Times i don't have to watch them to know wat going on in the Street or The Farm
In August 1991 in a bizarre interview with the Daily Mirror, conspiracy theorist David Icke accused Feast of being a high level member of the New World Order, a supposed group that works under the orders of alienoid shape shifting lizards and secretly rules the world. Icke explained that it's not just politicians involved in such an undertaking, but "entertainers as well". "They help condition people for the moment when the reality of their predicament is exposed"
@frodoireland and Ken, Deirdre and Gail, I love the fact Corrie still has so many original characters left..eventually when all the originals leave the show it won't be the same

@jiggarypokery I concur, the tram has already come off the viaduct in 1969. Nothing was ever mentioned about that.
