THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wish I had a piano teacher like you, this video really helped (especially if my computer didn't have to pause it every few seconds...)
Hey Chris, thank you so much for putting videos like this up. Just a critique I'd like to make as a personal preference for your lessons (I'm not sure how other people like it): if the goal is to teach people just how to play the piece, it helps me much more if you play the song/riff a few times slowly before delving into the theory. Also, while the chord names, inversions, and theory are interesting, I find that too much of it confuses me when I'm just trying to learn how to play the piece.
@kristianlarsen95 - hi kristian, sorry I wasn't able to finish the rest of this video. I got stuck trying to figure out how to get permission from elton john, still waiting for him to call me back.
He has HEAPS of help on his website link. It's been a while, but I vividly remember being emailed BOOKS of instructions. I believe for a little, and I mean a very little amount of money, HE will HOOK YOU UP!
@SoCaLPianoClub Thanks Socal! I'll be releasing more stuff soon! The chords 101 ebook is free for everyone who gives me their email address for email lessons.
Thank you very much, this song means a lot to me and my boyfriend, great story behind it :) So I'm going to learn this and play it for him when he comes home in a month. Great tutorial, you go very slowly and really point out the chords. Subscribing!
@XblobyX - I didn't finish it! I finished most of it and then got fed up with trying to figure out copyright and how to get permission to make sheet music and videos for it.
Dude seriously where the heck can i learn the rest of this song. I have this intro down. I looked on your Blog and i cannot find anything other than how to read the sheet music. And everyone else who has a tutorial about this song, plays it different, doesnt explain what there doing and the video is like 7 years old. Please help me im trying to learn this song for a friend!
I bought the rocket piano stuff, I have the lead sheet for "Your Song" but still would like to have the full sheet notation for this entire song, How / where do I get the full sheet notation?
Is this the same version as the one in moulin rouge? ((The movie)) Like, the same arrangment on the sheet music, or is it a little different to the one in the movie?
I have to agree with Mike! I have not been playing a long time, but this is one of the best videos I have found! You really do a great job. I learned this intro in about 20 minutes. Thanks a lot, look forward to more!!!
Chris: You do such an incredible job of teaching in general, but I was especially impressed with how you explained inversions. I've played, mostly improvisationally for over 40 years and had students of my own, so just had to tell you what an incredible teacher you are!! Bravo that you would do this to create a musical and piano interest in others!!
I am trying so hard to get my nephew and niece interested in music and sent them several of your videos because I love how you teach and break down each and every single segment. When you take each tiny sector and master that it then becomes just a matter of putting them all together and I wanted them to see how easy it is to do when you take it one step at a time. I sent them several of your videos because you explain this and demonstrate so perfectly. You are a MASTER What a great teacher!
Maybe you're trying to simplify for an easier entry, but the notes that you have for the first 3 chords are close but incorrect acc. to the recorded version.
sorry, but when you seemt so certain of what u wrote i would belive it was correct. Anyway, it sort of depends of the piano. C1 is always the deepest cord of the piano.
Without inversions you'd play each chord in root positions and to make a chord change, you're hand would have to jump everywhere, sometimes up to the interval of a 4th or 5th... This doesn't sound very good.
plus it requires you to watch what you're hands are doing.
When I use inversions, i can play without looking at my hands.
have you got your permission from elton john yet . i like the 2 keyboards the way you do it

i apreciate the guy doing this tutorial, but he has a rather bad technique, playing with flat hands and his fingerings at times can be bad :/
funki22duck 1 year ago
@funki22duck I think that might just be so it's easier for us to see what is being played.
ProcolHarum1967 1 year ago
@funki22duck - I don't normally play like that. You're right its bad. I'll play a little differently on camera than in real life.
I was playing straight fingers on some of the videos to make it really obvious which notes I'm holding down.
chrismarx85 1 year ago
@funki22duck i think he may be just playing with flat hands tomake it clear on what nots he is playing

@rOcKcHiCk1062 - they're similar. I think they're in different keys and the movie version has different instruments and a couple different sections.
chrismarx85 1 year ago
@chrismarx85 OH NO lol Moulin Rouge is the rock balled version of the song. Higher key, no intro, and a lot faster and more happy =)
reference- ive performed both versions for different shows

stupid question, is, why does elton j. invert the chords?
MJDickson69 2 years ago
Hey MJ
In some situations, chords sound good in their inversions, better than in root position.
Inversions let you smoothly move from one chord to the next, only moving your fingers one or two half steps from their prior location.
chrismarx85 2 years ago
Without inversions you'd play each chord in root positions and to make a chord change, you're hand would have to jump everywhere, sometimes up to the interval of a 4th or 5th... This doesn't sound very good.
