I've played guitar for 12 years, bass for 15 and mandolin for a year, I also teach music in a secondary school. He is in key, and as he is not playing along to song so whether he is playing in the song's original key is irrelevant. He is doing a rendition of the song, it's really not that unheard of; artists cover songs all the time in different keys - why do you think capos were invented?
