awesome! I'm going to download this addon. I just learned to fly the Delta. For the first time today, I took off, established orbit, met up and docked with the ISS, undocked, reentered and landed on the runway in cuba. And it only took me a month of my life to learn how to do it! PHEW!!! anyways, nice video!
Geees, it seems there are loads of competent captains here leaving their expert comments ;-P no shit. I am damned sure these captains never actually flew a plane by themselves except a sim game perhaps.
I noticed you held it level for a few seconds after ignition to build up speed, and that's good. But then I think you started pitching up a little too fast. I usually pitch up a few degrees right after release then light the engine right away. Then I very slowly pitch up to about 80 degrees. Don't pitch up any higher than 80 degrees or it will get unstable and you'll go into a roll. I've been able to get to 106.6km
What MFD did you use to change the Point of view of the Camera within the Virtual Cockpit? Those 3 dudes get in the way of an otherwise beautiful view
Considering that this week it is 40 years since the M2-F2 crashed (think opening credits of the 6 million dollar man) it is interesting that the guys in SC went with the added complication of the feathering. While I suppose it was for a better glide slope on approach, it complicates the machine significantly. If they had gone with a "conventional" lifting body design they could have been on the road to designing the next reentry vehicle for NASA.
What we should try to remember is that when we speak of the 'cost' of something we are only talking about an abstraction that never actually existed anywhere but in our minds. There is no cost, there is no currency. It is merely an incentive to get people to work. Hopefully there will be a new incentive soon because the current system is broken and we should be much further on technologically than we are now. But politics holds things back.
I would love to see Scaled Composites to go one step further and send the first civilian spacecraft into orbit. That would be awesome though to be a civilian pilot with a private piolit liscence and also be recognized as an astronaut.... I would love to fly to space in my own lifetime.
That's just to recover the initial costs of research and building everything. Once it's proven and they make flights regularly, the cost will drop pretty fast. Virgin Galactic that within a few years, the price could drop to around $50,000 and less as time goes on. And there will be other companies, so competition will drive the price down even more. The really awesome thing will be when they actually go to orbit...hopefully someday soon! SS1 and SS2 are only sub-orbital.
This is a freeware program, created entirely on one man's spare time, concentrating on real-world orbital mechanics and astrophysics. "The graphics" are coming along but are secondary to getting all of the physics details just right, to give people a real idea of what space flight is like.
Good video, FlyingPie. Although I doubt SS1 will ever be launched from KSC...
and where did you get white knight one and spaceship one.

Lazybum450 3 years ago
It's Orbiter... you can fly through the entire solar system. and it is real time too.

Soooooo like 18 years to Pluto kind of thing?
111olbap 2 years ago
Well you can speed up time so it take 0.1 sec to get there... but that is foolish to do since you will fly straight past it :P
Mikita12131323213 2 years ago
Can orbiter save movies in AVI or WMV?
klingondude 3 years ago
No, but you can use screen capture software like Fraps to do this.

Very nice vid. Good (not great) editing, and the added radio chatter was a plus. 4 stars.
Partok81 4 years ago
The radio chatter was generated by the SpaceShipOne addon. Still, this is a nice video, thanks for making it FlyingPie946LJ.

Not bad...It's kind of hard to see in the video, but I think your apogee was 104.6km, right? I think you pulled up a little too fast...

You don't need to reach orbit to be considered an astronaut. All who reach the 100km altitude limit are considered astronauts.

I would pay the 200k, but they better throw in a handy.

awesome video, good job simulating the spaceshipone flight ;)
i wonder how many people are gonna pay 200k to experience it in real life though :/
