This is bullshit. I'm from Russia and if you want to get a gun you have to go through mountains of paperwork and the type of gun you can own is limited (10-round capacity limit, handguns are extremely hard to get). Or you can skip all of that hassle and buy a smuggled Glock on the black market. Yes, it will be illegal, but if you are a criminal, why the fuck should you care.
But the pain in the ass of obtaining a gun legally is discouraging many law-abiding citizens from getting a gun.
Unfortunately the measures you are proposing will be ignored by the criminals. Sadly these criminals have a bully mentality and the only thing they fear and respect is someone that has the means and the intestinal fortitude to stand up to them. Gun Control makes the criminals job safer and easier.
Gun violence isn't going away by banning guns. Just look at Australia. DC has the highest murder rate since only criminals have guns.

I'm sorry for both of your losses but you are incredibly naive to think that a trigger lock or background checks would have prevented the tragedies. You also ignore the fact that mandatory trigger locks neutralize the gun as a defensive weapon. Have you considered that this actually will make it easier for a criminal to overpower someone and then steal the gun that they couldn't get to in time to protect themselves?

I grew up in a high crime neighborhood and have actually been shot at and I can tell you that you are not taking into account the will, evil and ingenuity of the common violent criminal. I can also tell you from person experience that they, like other predators, pick on victims who can resist the least....part 1

Lives that are every bit as valuable as yours or mine. If you're serious about ending violence in general, including gun violence then you'll turn all your efforts to fighting against the war on drugs. That's the real cause of crime and violence in America. When you reduce the number of criminals you'll reduce the number of people......

You are not an expert on gun violence just because you have experienced it. Also you said they were killed in Suburban Chicago in 1990? Well didn't Chicago have a handgun ban during that period of time? Didn't Chicago have the strictest gun control in the country yet had the highest murder rate in all of the United States? I can never feel the pain you guys felt in the loss of your loved ones but blaming gun regulation does not do them justice one bit because it is NOT the problem.
