i agree. i watched the under 15 everton and newcastle team play and they couldn't measure up to the flamengo under 15's who were awesome. the english team just played the hit and run game. very sad.
We gave the game to the world, the world studied how we did it in those early years of football, went away and found ways to improve, while we stubbornly carried on believing we were the best and the rest were beneath us. England didn't take part in the first few world cups because it was thought to be an irrelevant competition. When we did take part in our first tournament, we saw how the other countries had overtaken us. 1 world cup win for the country that invented the game is pathetic.

I couldn't agree more with this bloke. I remember an interview with Xavi Hernandez when he said that in England when a defender clears the ball into the stands the crowd applauds. In Barcelona the crowd would whistle and boo him as it shows he is not comfortable with the ball and he is weak.

@tag1989 Yes i agree. It's so sad to see young boys playing football and being told to "knock it long" and "get rid of it" like the ball is a hand grenade that's about to go off. When a young English kid tries to go past a player or do a trick and loses possesion he gets shouted at which ony makes him less confident in later years. In Brazil kids are told that they HAVE to do a trick or go past two players before they pass it or only use their left foot etc.

England youth development were tipped off about Bale back when Martin Jol brought him through to the Spurs 1st team but did nothing. Bale was interviewed recently about playing for either Wales or England and he said no-one from the English FA approached him ever. @1389nafets - I think the reason England hasn't been great on the international stage is because our coaches have been shit ;youth coaches that is. We need to change our mentality but also how we teach youngsters. And I think it is changing. We definetely have the potential. We have over 100 proffesional football clubs. We will always be a major nation. Football is our number one sport. But we have to accept that there are also a dozen other world class countries who can win competitions too.

The problem is the youth game in England and the gross misconception of what a "good" player really is. Youth teams focus on a "win at all costs" mentality instead of focusing on good core technical skills . If you're small in stature you haven't got a chance in England because it's the tall athletic strong kids that get picked even if they have no first touch or can't read the game. "hoof it to the big guy up front" "break his legs" "get into them". This mentality has to change.

TBH i think Craig Johnson was too harsh on the english kids....there are VERY talented, skilful kids playing in the parks...i play with them....But as usual, it's the coaching that lets them down...U get manager-parents who are in it for their own self gratification...the big, clumsy 6 foot kid or the olympic sprinter kid are always more sought after by these coaches..even if they have the first touch of a rapist...no-one is willing to take a chance with a little, diminutive tricky player
im aussie like craig and im not saying the aussie youth set up is any better than england because its not but i have a aussie matethat spent some time at tottenham's academy and Split, croatia and another in portugal. he said the differance was huge. at spurs they focus on strength and physical aspects and tricks and flicks werent encouraged. but in croatia, portugal, everything was done with a ball taking on/ running at players was encouraged.

I live in Spain and have never seen young players spending hours on their skills,training is just the same as home.The only difference is some teams try to play more from the back and through the middle
No question, there are serious problems with the way football is coached at youth level in this country.
Leaving that aside for a minute though, I'm convinced that more English players should go and play in the Spanish, Italian, German, French, Dutch and Portuguese leagues. Maybe the next generation should be taught to consider becoming heroes in La Liga, Serie A and/or the Bundesliga. It would be more of a cosmopolitan experience than just having a few foreign team-mates at an English club.

We gave the game to the world, the world studied how we did it in those early years of football, went away and found ways to improve, while we stubbornly carried on believing we were the best and the rest were beneath us. England didn't take part in the first few world cups because it was thought to be an irrelevant competition. When we did take part in our first tournament, we saw how the other countries had overtaken us. 1 world cup win for the country that invented the game is pathetic.

When a young English kid tries to go past a player or do a trick and loses possesion he gets shouted at which ony makes him less confident in later years. In Brazil kids are told that they HAVE to do a trick or go past two players before they pass it or only use their left foot etc.

Craig is right. Another farce is letting Gareth Bale through the net to opt for Wales. England youth development were tipped off about Bale back when Martin Jol brought him through to the Spurs 1st team but did nothing. Bale was interviewed recently about playing for either Wales or England and he said no-one from the English FA approached him ever. What a shame, one truly world class player finally comes through, the kind we are in desperate need for, and England dont snap him up.

We need to change our mentality but also how we teach youngsters. And I think it is changing. We definetely have the potential. We have over 100 proffesional football clubs. We will always be a major nation. Football is our number one sport. But we have to accept that there are also a dozen other world class countries who can win competitions too.

The problem is the youth game in England and the gross misconception of what a "good" player really is. Youth teams focus on a "win at all costs" mentality instead of focusing on good core technical skills . If you're small in stature you haven't got a chance in England because it's the tall athletic strong kids that get picked even if they have no first touch or can't read the game. Hit the nail on the head CJ, problem with the beautiful game is it has been hijacked by people only concerned in making money. The only bodies important to FIFA, UEFA, Premier League FA etc are the massive corporate companies who scratch each others backs. Sad days, bring the game back to the PEOPLE and yes our kids. Stop councils charging a fortune for pitches which because of cut backs suffer in their upkeep, eg no changing facilities, grass being left uncut etc.

The USA will make England look second rate for long periods of the game on Saturday. They will keep possession of the ball. You watch. I'm not saying England will lose necessarily because man for man there is more talent in Englands team (but not much more). But The USA will play better as a unit...ie a team. They will get the most from their talent. England routinely look poor against teams of lower ranking

This commentator is so annoying . He asks questions then interrupts Graig Johnson in mid- sentence and answers the fucking questions himself. As for Johnson fair play to him being an Aussie and getting worked up about it more than the english. The amount of English homegrown players is diminishing if you look at Prem league most clubs have foreign players. Less kids in the park playing football and more interested in T.V, I pods , I phone , Facebook etc. We got a lot of fat lazy kids.

The school I went to they had some incredible british born pakistani, black and asian and indian kids who are incredible but don't pursue a career in football because their parents stop them. I think these talent scouts are looking in the wrong places

TBH i think Craig Johnson was too harsh on the english kids....there are VERY talented, skilful kids playing in the parks...i play with them....But as usual, it's the coaching that lets them down...U get manager-parents who are in it for their own self gratification...the big, clumsy 6 foot kid or the olympic sprinter kid are always more sought after by these coaches..even if they have the first touch of a rapist...no-one is willing to take a chance with a little, diminutive tricky player

im aussie like craig and im not saying the aussie youth set up is any better than england because its not but i have a aussie matethat spent some time at tottenham's academy and Split, croatia and another in portugal. he said the differance was huge. at spurs they focus on strength and physical aspects and tricks and flicks werent encouraged. but in croatia, portugal, everything was done with a ball taking on/ running at players was encouraged.

Everything is wrong, kids ARE lazy , have been for a few decades, the mentality is the same...big kids at the back, little kids on the wings, too much emphasis on 8 year olds winning at any cost rather than playing the game the right way, too much emphasis on individual skills, not enough emphasis on team play......ie MOVING WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE BALL, even Man Utd don't move off the ball as well as they should.

Craig is fantastic! His passion as a player matches his passion now. He was great for Liverpool never say die and what a competitor. Wish he was English HE WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IN AN ENGLAND ELEVEN. Speaks the truth as always. Why is he not in the English game? A great loss to english football.

No question, there are serious problems with the way football is coached at youth level in this country.
Leaving that aside for a minute though, I'm convinced that more English players should go and play in the Spanish, Italian, German, French, Dutch and Portuguese leagues. Maybe the next generation should be taught to consider becoming heroes in La Liga, Serie A and/or the Bundesliga. It would be more of a cosmopolitan experience than just having a few foreign team-mates at an English club.
