  • I know. I should bought a mac when I had the chance. Not a problem...I will as soon as a I have a chance.

  • Ever heard of buying a PC

  • @onlycicala I have a PC... But what would be the point of using the PC if I want to test 3ds Max's performance virtualized under OS X? I wouldn't do a video to show 3ds Max running normally on a windows PC as it would be totally stupid... Thanks for watching.

  • @eExperiencePro ever heard of parallel or bootcamp !?????????

  • I AM.... iam i just like ritin in caps ?...

  • EVER HEARD OF A SCREEN RECORDER>>>?

  • @JordanMichaelVEVO Yes. But this is a performance/speed comparison test. The screen recorder would use resources biasing the results. Why the caps anyway? Be polite!

  • only time you need alot of power on a 3d modler is when you render or have massive amounts of polys not counting programs like zbrush, mudbox, etc.

i always get a DX error on max 2009 32 or 64 bit

  • Looks nice, even though this is pretty old. Especially the Mac. I've been thinking about buying a Mac. Only problem is that i'm going to use 3Ds a lot the upcoming years. Have you compared to a normal pc with about the same specs to see what is best? And would you prefer a Mac (bootcamp) or a normal pc for doing 3D work in 3Ds Max? The Mac costs a lot more than a pc which is a minus, but i'm sick and tired of pc's. They never work properly. I'll also use the Mac for Photoshop, music and videos.

  • @AngelusExitium The performance in bootcamp or a PC with the same specs will be exactly the same. Macs are just PCs with an EFI and a different operating system, so if you put the same operating system, there will be no difference... that being said I wouldn't buy a Mac if I had to bootcamp all the time, cause the beauty of the mac is in the OS. Anyway, I think there will be good news for Mac users about 3dsmax in the near future... =)

  • @starship77 Why? Is 3Ds being developed for Mac or something? That would be awesome.

  • Where can i download it? Cant find any link or website for 3D studio max. :( plz help.

  • I luv 3d studio max n_n

  • Do you think that 3ds Max 2011 will run smooth on a Mac Pro, 8GB RAM in Parallels 5?

  • @JWD96 Yeah, I think it will run OK, the main factor will be the video card. But if you are in a production environment or working with some heavy scenes, I recommend bootcamp. Your viewport performance will be beter with it.

  • Viewport quality is based on GFX card, and render time is based on CPU and RAM.

  • @CJCA915 that's correct

  • @starship77 Yea, I use 3DS MAX, of course I run it natively in Windows, rather than Windows emulation software for OS X.

Are you capable of using Direct3D for Max when running it like this or OpenGL?

Because, from when I've tested Max with OpenGL, viewport FPS sucked.

  • @CJCA915 Yeah, you can use Direct3D, the parallels drivers do the translation. The performance of OpenGL sometimes sucks with large polygon counts since the opengl that max uses doesn't have the polygon cache and optimizations that Direct3D have. But with character rigs, sometimes opengl is better... (I don't know if this is still true for 2011 though, haven't tested yet)

  • @starship77 Yea, but is the translation any good?

I hear it can be a bit rough, but I've got nothing worry about, of course, lol, on both accounts, since I don't need translation, since my OS has Direct3D support, naturally.

  • @CJCA915 It's good actually, but of course you can't compare with native speeds. Translations will always add another layer of computing thus making it slower... That's why I recommended boot camp in the first place... =)

  • 36 seconds?

My single core Pentium 4 running Vista and seven got the same time, my Quad Core now, renders a 720p render in about 4 seconds, of course the more detailed of a scene, unless you have a render farm will take a longer time, also it appears you rendered using Mental Ray which will dramatically slow down render for scenes.

  • @CJCA915 How can you have the same time if you don't have the same scene? You can only compare render times with exactly same scenes... Anyway, this was not a performance test between machines. It's a performance test between virtualized and native OS.

  • Some of the models I use, etc. are much more higher in poly count, some of the models I use, have close to 1 million faces.

Well, 3ds max render times are based on CPU and RAM, 3ds max running on an OS, specifically Windows, since it's the only platform that it's made for, will for obvious reasons render better.

  • @CJCA915 I'm not sure if you had seen my video, but I was able to get 3DS Max to run in Linux Ubuntu as well... It runs really well, I use it for my art on FlashCadabra(dot)com

  • @maw88ify Well, I prefer to run it on the OS it's actually made for, and you have to use some kind of emulation software to run it on OSX or Linux, because I don't think either one can run Windows Executable files natively.

  • @CJCA915 Sure it does run better natively in Windows , but it's still cool it works never the less. Parallels is even made for Linux Ubuntu as well, vmWare, VirtualBox and CeossOver... and a few others...

Now some cool programs that Linux can run natively are Houdini 3D, and Maya 3D...

I've been planning with Blender, now it is a bit hard to use, but it's great for being a free program, CartoonSmart has some good training videos on Blender...

  • @maw88ify We used Parallels in OSX Leopard, and it sucked at running even Windows XP.

Well, I have based all my work and skills in 3DS Max, since 2007, I don't plan on switching and re-learning, and converting all my models to use in a software program for Linux.

Blender is alright, I don't like the UI, it's like Lightwave, and they are both confusing, 3DS Max is a simple yet powerful CG application, it was used in King Kong, as well as Star Trek Nemesis.

  • @CJCA915 You should use what you makes you happy, and 3DS Max is a very good program, but "Houdini 3D" was also used in the making of "Star Trek: Nemesis" "Avatar" "Kung Fu Panda"...

Maya3D was use for the spectacular special effects in the latest "Star Trek" and Transformers" , "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace"

Most companies use all the 3D programs...

  • @maw88ify 3DS MAX makes me happy, lol.

Yea, I think Houdini was also used in the Directors Edition of TMP.

Yea, because some offer features others don't.

The latest Star Wars, 1, 2, and 3, you could tell there was more CGI than anything.

  • @CJCA915 I'm not sure if you have checked it , but 3ds Max has a great plug-in call fumeFX that you can great fire and smoke effect, and it's very easy to use... If you haven't checked out you should plus there is this other cool add-on to export 3D models from 3DS Max into to be use in Flash Papervision3D, or Flash augmented reality files very cool stuff.

  • @maw88ify Yea, I've used it, it's a nice plugin.

    Hmmmm, sounds interesting.

  • How did you get autodesk 3ds max running on mac coz i need it for my coursework and find it easier using a laptop. need help putting 3ds max on mac??? please help. great video

  • tell me when u find out

  • cool, i have wanted to see if worked good with parallels. have you tried it with boot camp? just wondering witch one is better. thanks, jeff

  • @tattoobaker Bootcamp will be definitely better on viewport performance, and will be able to use all of your ram (parallels have to share ram with the host OS witch is OS X) so the render times could be better too. The downside is you have to reboot your computer to use it...

  • Oh sweet thats just what I need. Howdid you get that?

  • I'm using Parallels 5 right now, but the video was made with version 4. It's pretty easy to use. And the performance is even better now. But I recommend getting as much RAM as you can...

  • Ah right. I'm not sure if I could run it smothly. I have an imac G4 with 500mb ram :( im not sure how you can upgrade mac.

  • you´re not gonna be able to run parallels on a powerpc mac. The good performance come from being intel x86. The same architecture windows use. Also, the G4 is kinda slow for today´s standards. Wanna sell your imac G4? I´m kinda wanting one right now :) (because of its design). Then you buy an intel mac an do your stuff.

  • I am concidering selling my mac for a better one or getting better film making equipment. I am just not sure of how much I could sell it for. Its 19" widescreen 140GB HD 750mb RAM 1GHz processor with mouse and keybord.

  • Looks pretty smooth bro but I have VMware Fusion 3 and I know you've mentioned you'd do a vid on that too but could you make it fast please!

[FYI: I haven't installed any virtual machines as of now]

  • yeah, I have already intalled it today and did some tests... The performance in viewports was a little better but with a few glitches... The render times are about the same. I´ll post the video today! Thanks!
