@semiautoriflelover1 Superseries 1985-86.Edmonton Oilers(Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey)against Red Army Team(KLM line).Result:CSKA won 6-3 on a Edmonton ice.
Team of the century according to IIHF: * Goaltender: Vladislav Tretiak (Russia) - 30 Votes. * First Defenceman: Vyacheslav Fetisov (Russia) - 54 votes. * Second Defenceman: Börje Salming (Sweden) - 17 Votes. * First Winger: Valeri Kharlamov (Russia) - 21 Votes. * Second Winger: Sergei Makarov (Russia) - 18 Votes. * Centre: Wayne Gretzky (Canada) - 38 Votes.
Hope you all got a point
This team has 4 Russians and only one Canadian Gretzy
This is from the 1983 Super Series. The Habs back then were not the '70s dynasty but still a good team. Tretiak shut out the Nords 3-0 in the previous game, too.
I was at that game, sat behind the camera center ice, probably 12 years old at the time. I remember two things from that game. One the wicked save in the first by Tretiak as he sprawled his stick across to save a shot from I believe was Robinson. The second was that monster standing ovation we gave Tretiak at the end of the game. I understood that day what the word Respect for an Opponent meant.
Anyone who could stonewall the Habs of that era was a god of goaltending. IF the Sov's hadn't had Tretiak, the big series' of the 70's would have gone totally differently.
My vote for best European goalie goes to Hasek because he dominated in the NHL too. We'll never know for Tretiak but ifs and buts don't make him the best in my mind, so I'll go with the Dominator.
@journeythruthepast My favorite description of Hasek's style was "stopping the puck". Unlike Roy's showboating, Hasek would really pull some unbelievable saves out. Maybe the most creative goalie I've ever seen.
@danhabsfan9 It's debatable if there is any better goalie, period. Yes people will say Brodeur, but Tretiak has to be a 1-A if not the best of all time.
He earned his spot in the Hall of Fame despite never playing in the NHL.
Tretiak is one of the managers of Russias Olympic Team. All I know is that Russia is one of the teams that is in the Gold Metal game, I hope one of the European teams makes it against the Russians, we'll leave Canada on 4th place.
Watch how fast, how much skill with the stick they had and how the goalies performed without oversized equipment helping them. Unbelievable skill and Hockey.
theres a name i haven't heard for a long time.. helmut balderis.. one of the all time great hockey names.. along with hakan loob and vela pekka -ketola..
"They have never - until now - beaten the Montreal Canadiens".
Well, maybe that's because THE SOVIET NATIONAL TEAM had never played vs. the Habs before. Canadian media and public have annoying way of thinking that CSKA and Team USSR were the same thing - and they weren't, although in the '80s it often seemed like that.
Again, CSKA - who had played vs. Montreal in '75 and '79 - was NOT the Soviet National Team. So when the guy says "THEY have...", it is not correct, since the national team had never played vs. the Habs before. Get it now?
Quite honestly, CSKA and the National Team were the same team. Perhaps a player or two from Dynamo or Spartak but from the start, the predominance of the Soviet National team was CSKA. Great players on other team were even funneled to the team. Using Helmut Balderis as an example, he played for Riga Dynamo and was moved to the CSKA team when it was believed he'd be the next Kharlamov. That's just how it was.
The only reason it technically didn't happen was they had on different sweaters.
Quite honestly, that is bull. CSKA had 2 great lines at best, the Soviet national team had 4 of them (at least in 1979-83). Usually about 50 % of the players of the ntl team were CSKA players (just count them!).
Vasiliev, Maltsev, Starshinov, the great 2nd line of the 70s Yakushev-Shadrin-Shalimov, Shepelev, Golikov bros, Lyapkin, Bilyaletdinov etc. played for other teams. And guys like Kapustin and Balderis - who you mentioned - had only short stints with CSKA.
It would so have been a total disaster for patrick roy if tretiak had come to the habs in 1983... No one would have drafted him and he would probably never have played in the nhl, because nobody sign undrafted 22-23yo players who play in europe.
@chapaev36 Certainly not my memory, that's for sure! I think it's just an assertion without justification, espeically since he never bothered to reply to you.
And thanks for the update on T in the '80's. By then I was too busy to follow hockey like I did in the '70's (and with Dryden my hero retiring in '79...well, it just wasn't the same anyhow) and I did not know most of this stuff. Good show.
Huh? Tretiak had 10 wins versus NHL teams and only 5 losses. In total against North American teams (Team Canada and Team NHL) in major tournaments he won a total of 30 and only lost 12. That is the truth.
my family is russsian and my grandfather is friends with him.He became friends with him cause my grandpa was a phisyan and maked sure the heart rate has okay and everything like that.Tretiak is now my friend too! awsome? i know!

The Oilers of the mid 80s would have smoked them, they were the only team faster. Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey, Messier etc.

They should still use the same size goalie pads, the goalies today are huge with giant pads and gloves, it's a joke.
