  • I don't get this...those waves are nothing compared to a lot of other parts...

    for example this:

    /watch?v=nNR5zacQihU&context=C3093709ADOEgsToPDskKgEpgAEsjveUFtYNBdEomW

    or this:

    /watch?v=agqy1LncD-I

  • @harikGod Tsunamis are very different, depending on the sufaceconditions at the place it hits shallower water. If they are slowed down alot in speed, they build up in height.

If they are sllowed to continue at relatively high speed, they do not build up as much in height, but it is still about the same ammount of water that hits the shore.

  • mother nature sucks cock sometimes.....glad ur ok matey

  • strange the way the tide recedes first very eerie great footage thank you

  • a very dangerous job, but nice video

  • It must be so scary :s I'm glad you survived,''lucky one'' :3

  • Everyone think ''Wow,it must be very nice to watch a tsunami....''but when it happens...it must be so scary man...

  • How many meters were you from beach?

  • @gbeugenio When the wave hit, I was at the beach.

The video is filmed from about 30 meters from the beach.

  • @AleksanderKalleberg ok, xD because the waves seem so little, thank you

  • @AleksanderKalleberg in indonesia is 35 meter

  • I dont like seeing disasters like this happening all over the world

  • sorry for ur losing. everything can happen from natural. come n travel in Thailand again plz

  • I disliked this because it made me sad almost lost a family member

  • I wonder how hard it is to stay on top and swim

  • think of a tsunami like a flash flood of the ocean. It isn't the height of the waves, but it is the energy behind the waves caused by displacement pushing the sea on to land. It is the same as if you take your hands and clap up & down in a pool of water. Water has to move to make room for your hands so your hands actually force the water out in all directions in waves, same as the displacement caaused by the earthquake. Hope this helps ...

  • are those the biggest wave u ever seen

  • Tsunami are beautiful but are probably the most devastating natural disaster on the planet.

  • Love the soundtrack

  • anyone at the beach would get sucked in by the wave coming back

  • At 0:05 was anyone else like "what are you doing video taping ripples" and then at 0:11 changing to "what are you doing videotaping a tsunami?!?!".... hhaha

  • What does it mean when the wave sort of rolls backwards?? i'm confused? Like 0:45 - thanks! x

  • @coolcrazy918 it is the bounce back effect of a tsunami wave

  • how did you know to get on top of the roof, did you see it coming or were you warned?

  • @PaulStaffie

This is not the first wave, but from the 2nd and later.

When the first wave hit, I was at the beach, running away. I just got up a stair as the wave hit, and i stood waist-deep in the water..

  • @AleksanderKalleberg ; wow dude; thank god you all made it out safe and your here to tell the story; thank you for the footage it must have been scary as hell to film it!!

  • I don't get this. I have seen a lot bigger waves

    that were not tsunamis.

How come those ones didn't do

    any damage?

    Can someone please reply?

  • @arpadpihes

    wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_a_tsunami_and_a_regular_wave

  • @AleksanderKalleberg Thanks:-)

  • @AleksanderKalleberg Bless your hearts going through this devestation. It's disgusting how many people come making jokes and crude comments about this disaster. So many people lost their lives...

  • @arpadpihes

A tsunami is a very different type of wave. In fact a Tsunami is more like a big wall of water than an actual wave. A Tsunami is generated underwater where as waves are generated on the surface. A Tsunami has a lot more energy and moves a great speeds.

  • @arpadpihes IMAGINE THIS. IF YOU BLOW THE WATER IN THE POOL WITH AIR(WINDS CAUSE OCEAN WAVES), IT WOULD MAKE WAVES BUT ONLY IN ONE AREA. IF SOMEONE JUMPS INTO A POOL OR MOVES FRANTICALLY (like a sea earthquake) THE FORCE OF THAT MOVEMENT WOULD CAUSE MOVEMENTS OF WATER/WAVES THAT WOULD AFFECT THE WHOLE POOL. LIKE WHAT NEWTON'S LAW STATES: THE UNDER SEA EARTHQUAKE'S KINETIC ENERGY WOULD TRANSFER TO WATER AND CAUSE TSUNAMI WAVES BECAUSE ENERGY CANNOT BE WASTED(or stopped) IT CAN only be transferred

  • Since a tsunami is a completely different type of wave. Normal wave is horizontally short. Up to several meters. Tsunami has a horizontal length of hundreds of kilometers. Although only 5 feet high, causing extensive damage. Hundreds of kilometers of the sea surge.

  • @arpadpihes the reason the bigger waves dont do damage it is because they have dont power! like wave in hawaii, they wind created, this one has strenth in it and pushed is by ocean more. (i learned english translater google)

  • @arpadpihes tsunamis are not as big in height as in width (several km) so they are like tides that exceed normal tide heights but very fast.

  • @arpadpihes the waves dont have to be big, they just get pushed so hard that they continue to move inland

  • @arpadpihes Larger waves hit higher, but tsunamis are MUCH more powerfull than normal storm waves! We dont call them tsunamis cause ther higher, but cause there created by earthquakes, not by storm. A earthquake in the ocean has ancient build up energy that releases at once, creating lots of waves. Once they reacht the shore, they grow. And ALL that ancient energy will be released on thousands of people. Look from 1:23 and on at left bottom of screen....

  • @arpadpihes Behind the Tsunami is a surge of water. You will notice esp some of the Japan footage that once the wave beaches the water does not then flow back out to sea as it would on a windy day. It stays put. Each consecutive wave is only the front for another rise in sea level.

  • Wow, amazing but horrifying.

  • era - don't go away

  • approximately how big was the second wave?any idea?cuz it looks kida small when u see it in the video..

  • People can say what they want about the 'insignificant' size of the waves, but it's the power behind them that made them so deadly. And the sheer volume of water... D:

  • @SophieSovereign i agree! and if one of you incompetent morons were there, would you be complaining about the insignificant size of the waves? i thought not.

  • Wow... from 0:30 - 0:50... you can visibily see the water being sucked back into the ocean... If you see this in real life and you're on the beach... just get your ass up and run for the nearest concrete+steel building.

  • i was in koh lanta in 2010 , they've got a new tsunami system.

  • my advice is that of you se that water going rapidly back and fast.

    run....

  • I don't care how many people died, nice HQ! Not like those shitty videos where its hard to see.

  • @crazyjoel123 how can you say that when over 250,000 people died. Why dont we imagine for a second that your family are in there? they were in a boat when this wave hit them, capsising them and trapping them in a sinking ship, their air bubble getting smaller and smaller!

  • Im going to Koh Lanta later this year. Just wondering if any of these resorts/hotels near the beach have been able to take any measures to protect themselves better should something like this happen again?

  • @MrDampkring There is new tsunami warningsystems all over South-East Asia.

  • @MrDampkring protect yourself from a tsunami??? look at japan and the better infrastructure and what the water can do

  • @MrDampkring It will happen again. The only real question is when will the plates shift again. Then again a good question would be "Has there been improvement on a warning system?" I doubt man can win a battle with the sea, but an early response may give people a chance to reach safety.

  • the artist is Era.......

  • @ktwarner87 whats the song called? :)

  • Man,This Is The 1st Video That I seen That Had Proof About Tsunami!Impressave And Massive Waves And Poor Peploe Cuz A chair Drownded Them! D:

  • Oh my god, this video is really shocking i never know the exact damage it could do, but now i saw that, really shocks me

  • cual es la canción? what's the song??

  • Weird thing is, the waves themselves aren't very tall or anything, it's like the power of them that amazes me:O

  • 3:41 i want my matress back

  • when I first read about tsunamis I thought they were like sky scraper big. But now that i saw the video I still respect them as destructive.

  • @RCMZ193 These were more like flash floods though still deadly. The sky scrapers ones are in the movies. Theese waves just kept coming and coming which ordinary waves don't do. The force currents were amazing if you got caught in that you'd sucked out to sea and many were on that day.

  • :'(

  • that was bad what happend at 0:46,because if whis wave is going back then a bigger wave is coming!

  • Who sings this song, very soothing

  • i like the music and im not gay

  • @METALLICA6547

I know......better when you hear the waves and screams and the distinct sound of gurgling

  • THE WORLD GONA ENDD!!!

  • @METALLICA6547

    fucking seriously

    amen

  • what the first tune called plz

  • @METALLICA6547 i agree dude

  • @METALLICA6547 i agree man

  • I don't understand? I know, I'll sound like a retard but can someone explain this?

WHAT I NEED EXPLAINED: Whoever made this said 200,000 people died because of those waves but they didn't go far when you watched this or was the bigger wave before or after this? I don't want to sound ignorant - I just dont fully understand:)

  • @HereIsRosie actually it killed almost 300,000 total but thats over all the islands it hit, they had no warning and the tsunami went inlad 24 miles from what i seen on the learning channel, some people just couldnt get away i guess.

  • @HereIsRosie The first and last waves actually went in quite a long way. The vantage point in this vid is from pretty high up so it doesn't do justice to the size of the waves. Also there were some areas where the waves hit harder than this one.

  • at 2:09 drawback

  • u people r DUMBASSES! this killed over 200,000 people...who in the right fucking mind would ride the waves...u people r idiots

  • @METALLICA6547 agreed

  • If I was there with my surfboard, I would definately ride does waves! Did someone tried?

  • Dude Why in the hell did i forget my surf board on that exact day? DAMN!

  • i thought that the tsunami waves where about 40m.By the way nice video

  • how do retards die from this?

  • @AlphaCrosby it looks like a little wave, but the water won't stop keep coming, so as soon the water is on the streets, it will just continue until it reaches mountains or travelles very far..

Dont mind my bad english d:

  • @AlphaCrosby r u FUCKING kidding...tht is not the worst of it..AT ALL!!! this was a 9.3 on the rickard scale...most are around 5.0 to 6.0...RETARD

  • can anyone smart ppl tell me how so small like in this video tsunami can kill more than 100,000 people?or is that just a fake(Video)

  • @denin93 the water was on the streets if your head smacks to a wall your probaly dead or if you in a house and you get stuck under something ....

  • @irapeforyou "Tiny ass tsunami"? The tsunami dumped 500 billion tons of water on to Phi Phi alone.

  • 3:40

is that.. a giant sandwich? o.O

  • Holy shit glad you're alright

  • nice point break at 2:08

  • lifeguard says, "folks be careful, the water is being largely displaced by an earthquake, the surfs gonna be slightly rough"

  • Ja y donde esta dios?

  • @Sniper2010Cal50 Por Que No Te Callas Imbecil!! Arrepientete Que Se Acerca El Fin Y Deja De Estar Con Tus Estupideses!! DIOS Viene En Una Nube De Gloria Pronto!!

  • @Sniper2010Cal50 vete a joder a otro lado

  • @irapeforyou You realize your talking about a tsunami which took away 180,000 lives, and could instantenously rip yours away from you..

  • holy crap

  • to all those who lost there live,s R.I.P.

  • For the ignorant amongst you these are tsunamis, ableit smaller ones, but they'd still overpower you with ease - for those that suggest they wouldn't you'd be the first screaming like babies if caught be any one of these - just look how they overtop the beach wall. The only truly montrous tsunamis were very localised around Bandah Aceh - one woman and her daughter miraclously survived a wave of over 30 metres - a man 130ft up a tree also had the top of the wave break over him and survived.

  • as others have said.. where was the tsunami???? these were just a series of big-ish waves! those people would not have been standing comfortably by the beach like that if that was the tsunami, they'd have been killed. i've seen actual footage of the tsunami where you can actually see the giant wave hitting the beach and covering everything in its path. i understand that this was an awful tradegy and the person who filmed this was lucky to escape alive, but this is NOT a video of a tsunami!!!!

  • @susiefloosie How ignorant, or how stupid can you be?!

Susie, this IS the tsunami that took place in Thailand 2004.

You say you have seen actual footage of it, and i wont argue

with you there. But you have to get your facts straight!

The tsunami, whether its gonna be huge or small depends

on the under water surface and structure of the land.

From what direction the wave is coming ect...

Please google some videos of "how a tsunami is made" //mac

  • @susiefloosie

Take a comparsion of Khaol Lak and Phi Phi for an example

In Khao Lak the wave was huge and rumbeling forward as

a train in full speed. Thats becasue the cost is very

shallow and wide, the wave builds up it´s strength.

In phi phi the surrounding water is much deeper and

wont get shallow until the shore. The effects of that is

that the waterlevel just seems to rise and "slurps" on to land

  • Качество отличное! А картина происходящего ужасная.

  • I like the song and video!

    Horrible day!

  • Very good video but totally annoying and unnecesary music, it ruins everything...

  • any chance of putting this up with the original sound without the music

  • nice waves, good for surf

  • were was the tsunami?

  • :( its just sad....i was just wondering...does anybody know the name of this song?

  • now thats a real tsunami thats nofake shit like the other videos

  • song name?

  • music is cool.

  • @171079 dude he lost people and the song goes with that

  • one small wave could do alot of damage!im sorry that your family died!my step family died in a tsunami to!some pll think this is funny BUT ITSNOT!!thats crazy,

  • o shit that tsunami was small and it did alot of damage and i also like the song ooooooo and the motherfuckers think this viseo stinks and the song tooo U now how many people die?

  • mjere keto njerez shume gjynaf

  • good clearity and documentation.. can u give me the name of this song... first part of this video.. thx

  • We are all spectators on the stage of life. Think about it...within seconds...250,000 people lost their lives. Death is always intimately woven with life.

  • at 1:26 look at the bottom left of the video and watch... look like kids... fucking sad

  • bah

  • It's funny how some people think everything is either fake or a conspiracy...dumb idiots!

  • tsunami would be far more bigger than this ...

  • @nepalfool u dont now shit

  • Why pray? It makes no difference! 1/4 million ppl were killed, what are you praying for exactly??

  • i wonder how does it feel being there watching n not know that poeple are dying??? this is scary just by watching dammn ..ill pray for all...

  • wow it didn t look that big

  • Why are most people who leave comments on youtube so uncivil. AleksanderKalleberg i sincerely appreciate your video in all aspects, thanks for posting!

  • Why are most people who leave comments on youtube so uncivil. AleksanderKalleberg i sincerely appreciate your video in all aspects, thanks for posting!

  • First time the wave didn't reach but second time it reached really powerfully..

  • These waves are incredible, don't underestimate them, they are quite impresive!

  • To bring clarity to those individuals inquiring about the correlation between what is depicted in this video and the estimated death toll in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, i will say this...roughly 250,000 people parished because the tsunami affected 11 countries, in which many more videos of far more destructive waves were captured on film.

  • that did not look like a big wave and how can that wave make all water go with lots of powers well like fast speed??

  • The thing is that a tsunami is a wave that propagates in the water, not at the surface. When it reaches the shore, the wave rises with the shore and just gains height quickly. It is not that the waves are fast, but just imagine trying to fight your away against a wave that is driven by the ocean, with all its weight behind it...

  • @GadKing

    a tsunami is really fast

    like 400 till 700 kmp/h

    thats really fast

  • @pennenbakje1 The water is not moving at this velocity on the ground...

  • @GadKing

    yes

i learned it at school yesterday

  • @pennenbakje1 Ok so the wave is travelling at half the speed of sound? As fast as a Boeing? I'm sorry, but no.

  • @GadKing

just to clarify as you appear to be mentally challenged..........the speed of a tsunami depends on depth of water. The deeper the water then the faster it will travel....thereofre in the open ocean a tsunami can travel at close to 600mph...but as the water shallows the front of the wave slows but the back carries on travelling faster which causes a build up in height. You r so thick, do some basic research......what is it like to be ignorant?

  • @GadKing

the water only moves locally idiot........it doesnt travel 3000 miles across the ocean. The energy does of course but not the water. It's like when you flick a hose pipe.....a wave moves along its length......but the hose pipe only moves up or down on a radius from your arm.......u r so thick GadKing.......i hate people like u

  • @GadKing

and wtf do u mean by the water is not moving at this velocity on the ground?

and i'd becarefull using the term velocity when talking about something that is moving in more than one direction........speed would be more appropriate in this instance dumbo. velocity is a vector quantity....but a tsunami is scalar.......get your terminology correct dumbo

  • @ZoracSiteManager I don't know what's your problem.. I'm arguing about the speed of the tsunami at the surface... I said "The water is not moving at this velocity on the ground". I also talked about the wave underwater that gains height as it reaches the shore. I know what a tsunami is. Just by looking at your youtube profile, people seem to think that you're an asshole, so I'm not going to argue on this anymore.

  • Not being disrespectful (and I really mean that), I have to agree with Trojanxplayer, how can a wave that apparently breaks over the dune manages to destroy the whole city, I am not being suspicious or implying that this was over rated, it is just me NOT being able to understand how this phenomena manages to kill so many persons. If you pay attention to the little palm trees shags on shore, they withstand the hits(please dont insult me)

  • :,(

  • I was there 16 years old.

I had lost this day my parents with my brother :,((( I can't stop every crying when i saw some videos or to remember on our holidays :,(((

  • @Trojanxplayer:

wtf see more videos and u will realize that the waves hit the city/town, whatever, and there killed alot of ppl

    watch?v=5GpEoQKC0kE

there show more how the city looks like after the tsunami

  • how did 250000 thousand people die when the waves didnt make it far in the island?? someone explain serious question.

  • it wasent just this island look at phi phi island phuket it got destroyed becasue it was closer to it and all the sructure there isnt as good as good as the wealthyer contries

  • @JOHNY19DIRTBOARDS:

chemistry has nothing to do with tsunami and earthquakes. you should review your college earth science and physics (not fisics) before posting things here.

  • learn how to spell fisics... like i did

  • Its a good thing i dont live near any open sea! So i dont need to fear tsunamies :)

  • A great video, Really shows the dynamics of a tsunami properly and how its not a huge wave, rather a huge surge of water.... its a pity so many people died :-( but its the awesome, unpredictable power of mother nature I guess

  • Ive surfed bigger.

  • BIGGER WAVES DONT MEANS POWERFUL WAVES. go study some chemistry and fisics like i did.

  • what did he say?

  • wow thank god your still alive to bad we cant say that about alot other people :( or their families

  • @DevPack wow, psycho much?

  • @mrlandsafe wow thats horrible atleast your alive tho

  • mein gott

  • Lol 1:25 =(

  • what are you lookin at

  • so is there any footage of the very first wave hitting? most of the footage i have seen the places are already wet, suggesting a wave had already come through

  • im so sorry dude

  • 1:25 omg those poor people :(

  • how long does a tsunami take?

  • In time? It can take several hours with more than one wave. It can even take one or so between waves.

  • o dats crazy

  • Yes! After first wave always wait safe wherever you are in case it comes again. Sometimes getting down to street after first wave is the biggest mistake.

  • it can take a long time. in this case after the earthquake it took 8 minutes.

  • sick wave at 2:07, better than pipeline haha.... but why wouldnt u run away, why stay and film? i mean its a tsunami, if it were me, id be concerned for my life, i woulda booked it out of there, u got balls dude... serious balls.

  • when your trying to stay alive you dont really think straight especialy when your scared shitless and i dont think they were thinking of watching the waves as much as running away from them

  • where could they have gone they were in a building surounded by water the best thing you can do is stay in the dryest place you can find and if you have to hang on for dear life
