Wow, the Shamen were so musically talented. They should have done even more instrumental stuff I realize now. Ahead of their time, visionary and bold - gotta love it.
There's suppost to be another version of this track, the "On Grass Mix" of Indica.
It was apparently recorded for the Euro '96 football tournament and also featured on a rare demo cassette of Hempton Manor, but apart from that, not released officially.
Don't suppose anybody knows if it's on Youtube anywhere?
Not to sure, although, calling it HEMPton manor , a track called indica, and their love of natural mind openers shall we say ! and the album sleeve being made from hemp, does give a clue.
Hempton Manor was actually recorded to p*ss off their record company, who by the time this LP was released, they had fallen out with.
The story goes that their label (One Little Indian Records) were reportedly unhappy with the Axis Mutatis LP because it was too experimental sounding and not poppy/commercial enough. Basically they wanted another 'Boss Drum', full of top 10 hits...
...The band felt that the label didn't do enough to promote Axis Mutatis and were not in favour of their new experimental direction. So they decided to record an instrumental LP out of spite, the result - Hempton Manor.
If you take the first letter of every track on this LP, it spells "F*ck Birket" (Derek Birkett being the head of One Little Indian Records), a clear message that the band were not happy to say the least!
An old story. Funny how they finally managed to push this instrumental album out, which probably made little chart headway and helped to push The Shamen out of the public eye. And those few that DID hear it, cried buckets at Indica and proclaimed Colin Angus the most underrated electronica producer/composer of the 90s.
@leroysirius Hell Yeah. Even more interesting is, if you read the initial letters of the tracks, they left a message for the label owner, Derek Birket.
If you read the track list, there's a (not very subtle) message for the label owner Derek Birket. 1. "Freya" 2. "Urpflanze" 3. "Cannabeo" 4. "Khat" 5. "Bememe" 6. "Indica" 7. "Rausch"
I bow down, this song is a masterpiece

Hempton Manor was a fantastic album; much better than their early shit like Ebeneezer Goode.
