The Master of the masters. The greatest pianist ever. Technical, musical, sensitive. Never too fast, he let us time to appreciate each note to catch all the beauty.
Who is yapping about mistakes? The only mistake is to not partake of the masters.....of which this is the master of masters. Sends a chill up my spine!
Born in "Chillan"...South of CHILE 7 February 1903.
Child prodigy, at the age of 3 already was reading scores and at the age of 5 it offered his first recital in his natal city.
" To be recognized by the people of the land where it is born one, it is the definitive consecration " ( Words after win the national prize of Art in Chile - 1983 )
Thanks "MAESTRO" Arrau...you stay Alive in our Hearts.
Stunning virtuosity. He doesn't just play notes, he makes music at an extraordinarily high level where technique simply is the means to the end of making great music.
i studied debussy's reflects dan l'ea (reflections on the water) with Prof. Fee played it for a rectial, lots of work, but the audience liked it did also Profkofiev Visions fugitives jus the first two in the series was fun and welll really nervous too.
@dsyglym play it by yourself and post the splendid version you'll do,man!!! without mistakes, without human sorrow, without everything that makes music take your body and leave you behind the sun
this piece has 80 years of laughter, sadness and passion in it... wonderful and breathtaking. So what if a 6 year old can play it? we rush to the cd store to hear someone like him play.
Totaly amazing, it's simply perfection. I like Michelangelis, but there is a point in the mucial question. Even if thery all were great, hardly anyone was as musical as Arrau. He had the ability to bring out the most wonderful expressions of every piece, and no one had his chrystalclear sound . While Michelangeli plays this icecold, like reflections on a wintersea, Arrau givs us the reflections with the warmth of a soft summersevening. It's different ways of performing music. Simple as that
@gaugin1903 wow... are you saying that michelangeli isn't as "musical" as arrau? I'm tired of hearing "well so-and-so is technically perfect while so-and-so is much more musical". really.
this is like the 20th time i watch this video and i have tears in my eyes again! i love his expression..he makes the piece so beautiful..if u just listen u can hear the reflections in the water :) arrau is amazing! and debussy owns a part of music history..he created his own music world. his music is wonderful!
This is so beautiful! Arrau had one of the most golden, beautiful tones I ever heard, and the best trill of any pianist. While there may be some other interpretations from other pianists that might be occasionally more imaginative or colorful, Arrau never disappoints and for me often wears well under repeated listening.
So beautifully played; you can almost see the sunlight sparkling on the rippling water, and feel the warm breeze as the music carries you into the visual space that Debussy creates through his exquisite pieces.
yeah, there are quite a few mistakes and he's playing in front of a huge crowd, but it's still the best interpretation i think i've heard on youtube so far.
HELLO! just a question, i know you dont like debussy, so who do you like>? im just really interested in your opinion because i love debussy and im really interested to find out what other people genuinely think, so id love to know what u are into,
When Arrau performed this,he was probably 80 years old. You can sense the mature understanding he had of this piece. This is what gives the music a life of its own ... and its beautiful imagery. Can't teach this it is personal devotion, study and love that make it happen..
He's better in the sense that he's technically flawless - no doubt about that. And Arrau certainly makes some mistakes in this piece. However I find Arrau's rendition more emotive. My personal favorite is Gulda though.
But I do think it's important to distinguish between "better" as in more technically perfect (which is arguably objective) and "better" as in the preferred interpretation (which is entirely subjective).
Arrau is a legend. I have his recordings. I am hypnotized by his hands. The wonderful things those hands have made. Will any of us ever know that pleasure? I think not. He is a master.

Yes, there are some mistakes...and so what??? this is so good...The great Rubinstein and Horowitz honestly aknowledged they used to play a few wrong notes, but definitely who cares??? music is feeling, and a lot of nowadays pianists should learn what feeling is instead of focusing only on technique. They may not miss a single note, but they don't understand the music they play and they are boring
Your remarks are spot-on. Only a very few people nowadays understand what music interpretation must be like. Music is a language, not a science. It warrants a few mistakes. The heart's speaking, NOT the intellect. Music should never be the object of performance measurement, this is typically another of our today world's deviations. Arrau's rendition of Debussy's masterpiece is simply... another masterpiece. Beautiful, humanly perfect.
When someone interprets Debussy in such a great way, without one note that does not have a true meaning, I am willing to forgive whatever false notes there might be!
Arrau is usually very good. But this piece lacked clarity, and he made lots of mistakes. >< The tempo was also a bit too fast for my taste. But then again he was 80 when he played this. I could only wish to play so well at 80.
Arrau is absolutely splendid. I love watching him perform. Thank you for vid. I wasn't crazy about this particular performance. The tempi seemed distorted at times. Very glad to have seen it though.
Well, I love Debussy and this pianist does an excellent job. but am I mistaken for noticing a couple or a few wrong notes during the scales. Ofcourse, I wouldn't blame him, and maybe that sort of mistake is common. I think about 1:49 is the main one I notice. I'm not nitpicky. I just want to learn more about Piano Performance.
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the wrong notes because there is much more going on in his mind and heart than just playing all the notes correctly
Arrau, you are marvellous

Well, I love Debussy and this pianist does an excellent job. but am I mistaken for noticing a couple or a few wrong notes during the scales. Ofcourse, I wouldn't blame him, and maybe that sort of mistake is common. I think about 1:49 is the main one I notice. I'm not nitpicky. I just want to learn more about Piano Performance.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the wrong notes because there is much more going on in his mind and heart than just playing all the notes correctly
