There is no reason not to hold onto anything, unless you are training specifically for balance or general functionality (and let's admit it, *most* people at the gym are not training for functionality, they are training for muscle growth).
Hold onto the rail in front, which will increase stability and allow a greater amount of weight to be lifted, thereby increasing strength gains.
