A sailing "license"...what a bunch of nonsense. Learn how to sail on a small rig and work your way up. The hardest thing to do on the ocean is not sailing, nor heavy weather skills, but navigating without all the "bells and whistles" (using only a "log", a compass, a sextant, a chart, a nautical almanac). Of course, I'm not tallking about "rich man" sailing...
@tomperanteau It's not the hull you have to worry about; bullet holes can be plugged with...plugs. It's kinda hard to plug bullet holes in humans the same way. Takes a bit more than a hammer, a knife, and a broomstick.
@tomperanteau Dem pirates got boats too...an' dey aint afraid of usin' 'em. Best bet is to have some serious firepower onboard...maybe a .50 cal Machinegun...
Or...you can sail as part of a regatta (like many do down there)
Or...you can avoid those areas altogether (unless you have some weird hankering to sail through the Suez Canal or the Strait of Malaca or whatever...Its a big ocean out there.
@plbuster Our plans are for the south Pacific and avoiding areas that have pirates. The south Pacific doesn't have a lot of pirates and has much friendlier islanders. We also plan to stay far enough off-shore so that they could not reach us. Power boats are much more limited in their range and fuel costs are just going to increase with time.
Ok we have the million plus dollar 57 foot. Beneteau. I would also prefer the fractional rig. Hunter seems to be the one I keep looking at. Their new 50cc is absolutly beautiful and half the price. Any comments?
One thing that surprised me early on in my sailboat career was how sailboats grew in complexity and price exponentially. the 50 Beneteau is well under $500k very well loaded also. The custom 62+ from CNB (Beneteau's custom yard) is well over $2 million. If the 50 is in your budget, choose her. If you wanted a semi custom 57-58' sailboat to cruise the world, the Beneteau is actually a bargain on the "big sailboat" market. check out the new 58......wow! and less money than the 57 was.
From the mid-'90's to early 2000's, beneteau built the oceanis 461 and 50, which were mast-head rigs. both were Bruce Farr designs and fantastic sailing boats
You can find them on the used market and we can help you, if you'd like. Thanks! -South Coast Yachts (sdbeneteau) 619-224-7784
@Barrettcanfield -- Thank you for your reply. Actually, I'm interested in a new boat. I suppose I could order new sails for my boat, rather than looking for boats with mast-head rigs. The only problem with that is, of course, that I'd be paying for a new boat with sails AND buying a new sail plan for it, too.
I strongly prefer mast-head rigs. The fractional rigs started appearing as 'safety' sails, I believe, because of the poor sailing abilities of many weekend sailors (roundups, etc.).
Man Im jealous... those beneteau boats are just beatutifull.. I have my first sailing lesson next saturday and sunday.. will start with the capri 22 and hopefully someday I can sail a big Beneteau like this one... so awesome
im 16, i got the liscense when i was around 13 and my dad had a 40 Beneteau First Class.. we sold it, we buying maybee a swan, tartan or hunter, or yeah another of this. but like 50feet
Your mainsail isn't hoisted fully....see those lateral ripples along the luff? Half a crank on the main halyard should do it. (while the sail is unfurled and luffing .....ok?) and yes Raymarine products are for weekend wariors not professional mariners...they look and behave like "Fischer Price"...lol
i was simply making an observation, its not my fault he bought a crappy depth finder. ive been on boats my whole life and i dont care if your in the middle of the ocean, if your cruzing along there should at least be a pair of eyes keeping an eye out for debris, commercial fishing traps, vessels without radar, kelp patches that can damage the prop, or any other dangers. Common sense is being over prepared rather than not prepared enough and ending up like so many other ship wrecks.
"A crappy depth finder"? That's a top of the line raymarine equipment package on the boat. Rewatch the video, it is on autopilot but the owner/captain is sitting at the stern seating and watching. Calm down, admit that you didn't know the equipment, let it go, and watch a beautiful luxury boat sailing in beautiful location.
This is off of san diego. They're a ways away from catalina island during that part of the video. When he pans around after the shot you're looking at do you see land? That depth finder is a raymarine st60+ that is only good to 600 ft. Maybe no one is paying attention because they have common sense?
The first 5:08 of the video we are sailing off Catalina in about 20 knots of wind. (from 5:09 on, we are motor sailing home to San Diego). And yes, we did hit 10.2 knots under sail off Catalina and I regularly hit 8+ knots in San Diego Bay. Listen to the video conversation from 2:30 to 2:33, just before we broke ten knots. This is a very fast yacht for its size and displacement. Once it gets some momentum, it goes like a freight train and is extremely exciting to sail.

CAN SOMEBODY ANSWER ME, CAN THE HULL SURVIVE AK 47 BULLETS? BECAUSE THATS THE REAL TEST OF A WORLD CRUISER
yammer123 1 year ago
@yammer123 Sure the hull can survive AK47 bullets. Because the AK won't be able to travel far enough off-shore to shoot at this boat.

@plbuster Agreed. If push comes to shove, we won't be close enough for anyone with an AK to get to us. That would not fit into our plans.

-hoist the mail sail properly
-don't leave all that rope in the gangway
-tie the dog
-don't hold on to something weak like a bimini
-never tow your dinghy like that. (if it flips it will vacuum itself)
forget about it, I'm just jealous....
