I just bought a Samick Artist Serise 17" JaZZ box off of eBay that needs some work. It had a broken Bigsby hinge among other things. I was going to just go ahead and buy some great (read expensive) pickups for it without plugging it in. Am I glad to hear this video before dumping more on the pickups than the guitar costs.
This video helps to illustrate something that I've thought about for a while. It doesn't really matter what the name on the head stock says, what matters is the wood the guitar is made of, the amp it's running through, and most importantly the person who's playing it. Some guitars are just going to sound better than others because the wood is just better and the player brings out the best in that wood. Remember wood is a variable. Every tree is different and so are the guitars they're made of.
I agree, no matter what guitar I play I still sound like me playing. Which is really a sad state of affairs. I want to sound like Robert Conti, but I still sound like me. I just bought a Samick JHS650 that needs work. Can't wait to get it all repaired and set up.
The Koreans seem to know how to make really good guitars - I have an old Antoria Jazzstar which is a superb instrument and fast becoming my favorite box. I also have 3 Jap guitars from the early 70's - an Epi, Suzuki and Grant Les Paul. as well as a Tele and Strat but the Korean archtop has that indefinable quality that makes you not want to put it down - and also that curious feeling that it expects you to play your best on it. Can't recommend 'em enough.
I did get my eBay rescue Samick up and running and am very pleased with it. Top quality jazz box for not much money at all.

Judging by the fretboard this is a Samick HJ650. These were produced in the early 90's, and appear used fairly often.
