sadly, since he sobered up he's not nearly as witty on stage. i've seen him a good few times too. willy vlautin on the other hand is the real thing...but then, he doesn't do GAP ads so i doubt you've heard of him.
He might be a brat, but I was at this show and he played a solid two and half hours straight and in between songs he would talk, interact and tell jokes to the crowd. Likewise the whole band came out and greeted us afterward behind the venue. Easily one of the best nights of last summer, and he's become, by far, one of my personal favorite singer-songwriters.
