Prophet Mohammad had asked Malik ibne Nuwaira to collect zakat during the last days of the former's life on earth. Hearing of the Prophet's death, Malik returned the zakat money to the people. When Abu Bakr was nominated as a Caliph at Saqeefa, he ordered Khalid ibne Waleed to collect zakat money from Malik. Khalid tricked Malik into surrendering, and then beheaded him, and then Khalid raped Malik's wife. On learning of the incident, Omar ibne Khattab became furious and accused Khalid of murder.
