when most sitcoms tried to pull a scene like this, they always missed it. On Home improvement , a scene like this would have tim allen cracking some stupid joke, on family matters, they'd over did it, on seinfeld, well its seinfeld, and most other sitcoms almost or completely avoid this type of scene or when they try, they fail. This is what makes the fresh prince a great show, they do things almost perfect where as other shows fail.
I wish these parents would realize how much hurt they cause their children and that it is never too late to try to do right by your child. There is not always going to be an Uncle Phil to do your job. But to those parents that step up even when its hard, Thank You!
while it's true Will's emotion and acting really defines the scene, but I think Uncle Phil's posture, facial expression, and the genuine fatherlike concern really captured the essence of the scene and enhanced the overrall delivery..Especially that powerful hug at the end
One of the realest moments on television as a kid. I remember this scene like it was yesterday. Very moving. Despite similar circumstances like in this episode, I'm glad I made peace with my father before he went into the afterlife. RIP, Papi.
Damn.... this episode had me heartbroken, when Fresh Prince is funny, it is hilarious, but when it is serious, man that stuff is SERIOUS. This episode relates to me in some ways, it just sucks me into the story... My all time favorite show <3
pure power right good job to the writers and cast. This type of play on emotion is can clearly move the audience for years to come. More scripts should follow this formula of forcing emotion on the viewer
FUck these kinds of parents. WHy they give birth to us if they treat like this? they should use condoms or somethings. They should kill us when we are fetus. They should use birth control. Why humans keep on breeding. These bastard parents.
Any great sitcom worth it's salt always has the occassional serious moment. Shows like Fresh Prince always nailed it down to the ground. You always feel a bit odd knowing that there's a few minutes of drama after twenty minutes worth of comedy.
best emotional scene on the show. I grew up with a father around but we never spent any time together. the only memory that i have growing up was tossing the football one time with him. On my 2nd throw to him he wasn't paying attn and it hit him in the face. i felt so guilty that i never did anything with him again. The only other memory i have is getting spanked. But i know that he loved me and provided for me whenever i needed. I give props to all who succeeded without a father in their life.
this is how i feel i had 17 B days with my dad i had 10 talent shows he didn't even com to you now what hurts wine your playing Foot ball and you here dads saying This My son
I'm a father who loves his daughter to death...and she loves me to death...but I want to know why do the women give the men who are there for their children hell? But the bastards who aren't there for their kids, the women can't let them go? I can't understand that...my baby's mother is trying to give me hell until the child is 18....it's sickening...I guess it's the 'in' thing to do these days...my opinion.
im 14, my dads nowhere to be seen. when my moms water broke he wouldnt even take her to the hospital. the day after he left . On christmas, he called saying he was about to come visit but his carbroke down, yeah.. on my 14th birthday in April he sent me a card, saying hes sending me a gift. its october now and ive never recieved it. I Just high school, and i already have scholarships. fuck him. when i make it, he better not try to get back in my life, then.
@justpeterit Wow, That's wonderful about the scholarships :D as for your "dad" if you can call him that, you are better off ;) It doesnt just take making a baby to become a parent you have to care and raise the child as well.
@justpeterit , It will be his loss he will miss out on a wonderful human being.Your light will continue to shine so make the best of the life that you have been given in spite of the circumstances that brought you here. You exsist for a reason and you most explore all the possibilities.
anyone who grew up without a father would understand this scene, some people show no emotion to it some cant help it and this scene hits me hard when will says"how come he dont want me"
@RealTrue661 absolutely true. i'm 42 now, parents divorced when i was 10, didn't see much of the old man, he died when i was 20. Very powerful scene for those who can relate to this sort of "abandonment". It really touches a nerve. Take care.
@RealTrue661 dude i totally feel what you're saying. I grew up without a dad too, he passed when I was 2. This scene is one of the most emotional ones I have ever seen. I NEVER cry but this scene gives me that lump in my throat and the movie John Q actually made me cry. This shit is crazy man, these ignorant assholes just dont get it.
@smoketunes yeah, will can be cocky but no one deserves to be walked out on by their father. maybe if u had been raised by ur father better, u wouldn't be posting such ignorant comments on YOUTUBE of all places. go call ur father.
@smoketunes nothing is wrong with him making that trip but he had his priorities in the wrong order.... considering he aint seen will in 14 years, he should have cancelled everything to spend time with his "son"... although will is cocky arrogent and annoying at times, he is still human and humans should always come before money.... T-T
@KnotTheMan I think you are right about the fact that there was no dry eyes on the set. I can swear that just after uncle Phil takes the cap off Will's head, it sounds like a woman bursting in to tears in the background...
Lou obviously cares more about making money than spending time with his son. Adding the fact that Lou didn't even have the balls to tell Will at first just shows you that Lou is a selfish, gutless jackass and that Uncle Phil is more of father to Will than Lou could ever be.
Such a powerful episode Will Smith DBen Vareen were so believable. One of my favorites. In my honest opinion all deadbeats should place this one on repeat.
i cried when i saw this episode becuse lou didnt want anything to do with him for years then all of a sudden he turns up when its too late when i saw will crying i was very emtional too he neglected his own son as my bfs dad left his mum when he was a baby too she had to raise him all by herself so he knows what its like

@Shehasnomorals nothing you said was eyeopening , new or even at all worrying. It's the art of storytelling, one that has evolved throughout the history of humankind. If entertainment wasn't designed to help 'the masses' escape, what a shit existance this would be. I bet your life is great with your cynical and singular view tho.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There is nothing "deep" or "powerful" about this "television program." That's not Will Smith's actual father; this is a work of fiction. Meant to evoke certain responses in the dumbed down masses it was meant to program.
Will Smith is "acting." Stop equating TV scripts with reality. Those who control the media have been using techniques such as this to "dumb down" the masses for years.
@Shehasnomorals nothing you said was eyeopening , new or even at all worrying. It's the art of storytelling, one that has evolved throughout the history of humankind. If entertainment wasn't designed to help 'the masses' escape, what a shit existance this would be. I bet your life is great with your synical and singular view tho.
"Entertainment" was, and is, designed to program the masses. The effects of this programming can be seen here; merely by viewing the numerous emotional responses this work of "fiction" has evoked. In ancient times the viewing of "plays" were at times made compulsory; in order to "trigger" certain responses/behavior in the viewers. The old saying is: Monkey SEE, Monkey DO.
Conclusion: You may now finish crying over Will Smith's fictitious life on FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR.
A sentence later you said: "people cry because art is based of the human condition, people see themselves in it and it connects on an emotional lvel with them."
The above equates to "crying over a fictitious life." Anyone who "sees himself/herself" in a fictitious character has been MASTERED (See Programmed) by said character. A "work of fiction" has gained control of the emotions/actions of a living, breathing being.
@Shehasnomorals@Shehasnomorals Nobody is crying over his life, people cry because art is based of the human condition, people see themselves in it and it connects on an emotional level with them. You dumb dumb. Maybe you should go read a book and stop being a ignorant piece of shit
One of Will Smith's best scenes, I still get teary eyed watching this.

Looks like their plan is working well.

First you said: "Nobody is crying over his life"
A sentence later you said: "people cry because art is based of the human condition, people see themselves in it and it connects on an emotional lvel with them."
The above equates to "crying over a fictitious life." Anyone who "sees himself/herself" in a fictitious character has been MASTERED (See Programmed) by said character. A "work of fiction" has gained control of the emotions/actions of a living, breathing being.
