thats where some of the electronical equipment is located (Thats my best guess from what i pieced together using the internet)

@GranTurismo360 From what I remember reading, they had to run with the side doors open to help prevent the engines from overheating.

@GranTurismo360 Since the locomotive is so long, it is a "passage" way to get from one side to the other.
