Well, it was pretty dumb of Hansel to not properly close the donkey pen.

Plus, I always wondered why they didn't use something else to mark their trail, like sticks or pebbles or something.

@Adamguy2003 well in the original tale, he uses pebbles to mark the trail and they come back. then the STEPmother gets them lost again and all he has then is bread

When i was a child watching this i used to think the mother was mean and cruel but now, watching this as an adult and mother i understand exactly where shes coming from! Tired, hopeless, at the end of her tether and at the same time guilt for seemingly hurting her kids and love cause she wants her kids to be happy. Yes, I have experienced all these feelings and have heard way worse from the mouths of some terrible mothers.

I like the mom,sometimes children can be exasperating and at least she was concerned about the children as you will see later on .every once in a while a frustrated parent will tell a child to get out of their sight,but you always know they love you.
