And let's be honest with ourselves, anything shy of pure blooded Roman aristocracy was less than ideal, but you can say the same of most pre modern societies. (Feudal Japan, Renaissance Italy, Middle Ages Europe in general etc.) I personally enjoy living in our tragically, or blissfully if you will, ignorant times.
