JFK's body is barely cold and they're enjoying football... go figure. I was just a little baby and my Buffalo Bills were about to win back-to-back championships... never to win one again! Doh!
my grandfather swears that the 63' chargers would have kicked the 63' bears asses if they had been given a chance he told me that the chargers tried to schedule an exhibition game and the bears coach george halas declined.
I think the '63 Bears would have done to the Chargers exactly what the Bills did to them the next two years when they outscored the Chargers 43-7 in two championship games. And the Bears were better than the Bills. The Cowboys and Vikings made the playoffs in their 7th and 8th years respectively. it took the AFL as long to build up to the point where their best team could beat the NFL's best. I loved the old AFL but they were still aminor league at this point.
@44032 we will never know if the bears were better....they didnt play. the AFL won 2 of the first 4 super bowls and 4 of the first 8 so to call them a minor league is irresponsible. the NFL was a 3 yards and a cloud of dust league and never seen wide open offenses.
@getyoasshome I'm tlaking aobut the 1960-65 period. The AFL was a minor league at that time. As I've said, after getting blown out in the first two Super Bowlsm the AFL really uipgraded themsleves, using the common draft and many stars of the early epriod dissappearred from their rosters. What happened in 1968-and afterwards has nothing to do with 1963. The Bears were certianly as good as the 1964-65 Bills, who beat the Chargers 43-7 in the next two AFL title games.
@44032 well of course it was a minor league it didnt even begin operation until 1960...no league starts with a bang not even the NFL. the difference between the 1964-65 chargers is they were not the 63' chargers....i said the 63' chargers could beat the 63' bears....i dont know what they were doing after 63' the only point im making is about 1963.
@getyoasshome Well if 1964-65 wasn;t relevant, than neither were the Super Bowls after 1968. By the way, the Chargers were my favorite AFL team. They were exciting to watch and I loved the uniforms. I'd have been rooting for them against the Bears. But I don't think they would have won.
@44032 i never said the AFL didnt get dominated during the first 2 super bowls...that being said the jets and the chiefs are what basically forced the merger. yeah the AFL got beat by the packers in SB 1 and 2 but the AFL kicked ass during the 70s the raiders, chiefs, dolphins and broncos won their fair share...broncos didnt win the SB but they got there. the
@getyoasshome The merger had been forced before SB1 by player bidding wars. Certainly by 1963, the leagues had equaled out. The only real difference for the entirety of the decade: the Packers in their 5 world championships. They equally kicked the ass of everyone, NFL and AFL. The 61 Oilers, 62 Texans and 65 Bills wouldn't have stood a chance, because unlike the 68 Colts and 69 Vikings, the Packers would have respected how good their opponents really were and prepared properly.
@44032 -Bolts would have destroyed those fat and slow Bears. Anyone with any knowledge of the game knows that. You are full of shit, the NFL was afraid.
@waltherppk1000 How the hell do you know who would have won? The 1963 Bears beat Lombardi's Packers to win their division with a magnificent defense (something that AFL had yet to develop---at least not before the great Bills teams of the mid 60s came into play). The Bears offense wasn't near as good as the Chargers offense, but the Bears defense was markedly better. Personally, I think the game would have been a hell of a battle.
Keith lincoln, a fullback with the stride of a sprinter. Paul lowe, an explosive high stepping halfback. With Hall of Famer lance alworth on the flank, this is was an explosive offense! Thanks for posting. I've seen these highlights before in black and white but it's great to see this in color.
They had played before in the regular season, and Sid Gillman refused to show the Patriots anything,by not having anyone run in motion before the snap. But here in the championship,@0:12, you can see Paul Lowe go in motion, affecting the Patriot defenders, and Kieth Lincoln was off and running for the entire afternoon.
dude..come on. Jay cutler sucks, you know it. Nothing wrong with being a fan, but even lions fans know they suck and they dont act like they are awesome.
Nazi please. What matters only is the present. The Gayders are on the ground, the Chargers have hope. And yes they have a ring (this video proves). Get laid puta.
@ozoid455 Neither was I, but this team was decades ahead of its time in terms of offensive capability and strategy. (Or stragety as Bugs Bunny put it.) They definitely could have beaten the '63 Bears and been the first AFL Super Bowl champ had it been there that early.
The Chargers "could" have beaten the Bears? They would have beaten the Bears, easily. The AFL surpassed the NFL very quickly, and the 63 Chargers were a special team. The Bears would have had no clue how to deal with that offense. The Chiefs and Raiders were overwhelmed by the Packers' mystique in 66 and 67, but any other NFL team couldn't deal with the best AFL teams, as the Jets and Chiefs decisively proved in 68 and 69.
@uhmfar The Bears were just as unique and complicated with their defense as the Chargers were with their offense. No guarantee that great Chargers team would have beaten them. Plus, the AFL surpassing the NFL very quickly? Considering the Dolphins had an NFL-bred coach leading them to 2 Super Bowl wins, the Raiders were the only truly AFL-bred post-merger franchise that won Super Bowls until 1997. Mystique didn't win SB I and II...the Packers not underestimating their opponent did.

Three American Football League championship games were played in San Diego. None of them sold out. Subsequent AFL championship games did sell out in Houston, Buffalo, Oakland, and New York.
I had never seen these highlights before, so thanks for sharing. Where did you find this video? Compared to what you see today, it's fascinating to see how muted the celebrations were after big plays back then.
@michael11185 The 1963 Bears, Packers, or Giants would have carved the Bolts apart. The won an early AFL title. Neat, but hardly winning much to compare with the NFL of the time or now.
@KevinRuetz Wrong. The Chargers would have destroyed the Bears. The Bears were a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of dust team. Big Ernie Ladd, Earl Faison and Chuck Allen would have stopped them. "Da" Bears didn't have the speed to match Lincoln & Lowe and nobody could cover Bambi. Chargers 42, Bears 10. Earl Faison was right. "We are the champeens of the un-i-verse!" AFL rules.
@Dietpepsivanilla Would have been an interesting game to watch, but you have no idea for sure what would have happened. The Bears only allowed 144 points in 14 games. They didn't score a lot, but they didn't have to. The Chargers and their vaunted offense only scored 7 points per game more than the Bears. Chicago actually threw the ball more than San Diego did in 1963. Would have loved to have seen it, but please be realistic.
@thecelebratedmisterk You're right it would have been interesting and I have no idea, but then again nobody really does. I still stand by my statement the Chargers would have won, but that's my opinion. I don't believe Richie Pettibon (good as he was) or Rosey Taylor could have covered Lance Alworth, and it would have been cool to see Bill George and Doug Atkins go against the great Ron Mix, Walt Sweeney and Ernie Wright.
@Dietpepsivanilla Would have been fun to see that offense against that defense. But Halas would have had a hell of a lot more to lose than to gain at that point. He and the other old-school NFL owners (which was most of the owners) hated the AFL guys with a passion, but they weren't stupid enough to take the chance on losing to them.
Hell, even Lombardi was shaking like a leaf before SBI and he had a great team.
@thecelebratedmisterk You make an excellent point. In those days, the AFL had nothing to lose and everything to gain while the NFL would have had its rep on the line. Kind of like it did when the Cleveland Browns spanked everyone after the demise of the AAFC. Good point!
Well now you do! Lincoln, Lowe, Rote, Hadl, Alworth, Mix, Wright, Norton, Sweeney, Ladd, Faison, Westmoreland, Allen, Gilman and an assistant coach named Noll. Remember those names. They were great.
How very, very neat to see.
