People had this bullshit idea about the Maya being peaceful star gazers for a long time. Then the murals of Bonampak took a nice big historical shit all over that idea, and I thank the gods for that. Better historical fact than romanticized fantasy.

the Maya empire had declined (as most empires do) but they did not "destroy" themselves. The spanish, however, systematically set out to destroy thousands of years of culture, traditions and written histories upon their arrival. If some of these ruins had not remained undiscovered, we'd know very little about Mayan history today.
