I was named after this guy, but in the original beginning he was shown riding full gallop and firing a single action revolver forward until it was empty. - It was like he was really trying to kill someone. with a goofy shit smile on his face,- this was the creepiest thing to behold on television n 1965!
How can the kids of today's generation continue to live, without ever having seen Roy & Dale, or Gene Autry, or Randolph Scott, or Gary Cooper, or Lt. Rip Masters, or Matt Dillon, or The Lone Ranger? How can they have any moral compass without those role models? How does any hair grow on their chest?? Will they ever procreate? What will they become without these vital life-lessons? Is red-blooded society headed for doom and ruin? Ohh, carry me back to the chrome-bumper '50s!
He was my favourite cowboy, watched him every Saturday morning. I got to see him perform with Trigger at the Ky. State Fair when I was small. I can still remember him and that gorgeous horse in the center of the field in a spotlight. He was a real gentleman.
I remember this as a kid, brings a tear to the eye. Me and my great grand parents love Trigger & Bullet. This is an lost era when T.V. was truly about family time and enjoyment.
A sad revelation for all Roy Rogers fans.. The secret is out.. Dale Evans actually had the the faster horse.. Buttermilk was a Quarter Horse, and she had to kind hold him back, so he wouldn't outrun Trigger.. Roy, Dale, & Trigger.. We love you, Pat Brady, Nellie Belle, and, Bullet..
KaptKan1: Yes, we'll remember that, and a lot of other stuff. Even useless stuff like, "Crest has been show to be an effective, decay-preventive dentifrice, that can be of significant value when used in a conscientiously applied program of oral hygiene, and regular professional care." LOL
@StvMcQueen1 Don't feel like you're alone. I remember that quote too and well as a bunch of other silly stuff from 50 years ago. Don't ask me what I did five minutes ago though because it's gone forever.
saturday mornings back then were a treasure chest of great shows, one after another.there wasnt sex and violence in them like todays so called tv shows, these shows were written by people that knew how to write shows that were decent and that were entertaining.
With the possible exception of the opening to "Superman," (and later, after puberty hit, the original opening to "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."), this is the most exciting opening to a TV show I have ever seen.
Pat Brady's jeep was named "Nellie Belle". Only us old guys who grew up watching Roy and The Lone Ranger and the rest of the classics know details like that. I'll probably remember the lyrics to "Happy Trails" when I no longer know my own name...
@KaptKan1 I am 21 and I grew up watching "The Roy Rogers Show" so never free not all of the new generation is clueless about the great things of the past generation!! Happy Trails to you!!
KaptKan1: Yes, we'll remember that, and a lot of other stuff. Even useless stuff like, "Crest has been show to be an effective, decay-preventive dentifrice, that can be of significant value when used in a conscientiously applied program of oral hygiene, and regular professional care." LOL
Houghs Videos SUCKS.....she does us the wonderful service of putting the opening theme and video for the childhood TV heros of many of us like The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers and then she sells it all out to a commercial tag or crawl like "make a cartoon of yourself".....what a waste....what a disrespectful and disappointing waste....a pitiful, pathetic, post. Leave our memories alone!!!! .....find a way to make an honest buck and leave our memories alone!!!!!!
The word "tonto" can mean "crazy" in Spanish. The Tonto Apache of north central Arizona got their name from the Spanish not because they were "stupid" but because they were wild in their actions against whites, Mexicans, and other tribes. Zane Grey wrote a lot about the Tonto Basin, Creek, (Mogollon) Rim, and other "Tonto" named features in AZ. It wouldn't be surprising if whoever created the Tonto character as the Lone Ranger's sidekick, had read Zane Grey. Just my theory.
@ResidualConfusion in english, the word is "taunt". If someone is to taunt you, it means that they are baiting you. It also means to tease, or to make fun of someone. The spanish version of taunt, is tonto. It literally means a silly person.
well there are a lot of names which mean a lot of things in different languages. The name Ben means Stupid in Chinese. So Ben Daniels could mean Stupid Egg in Chinese which is a big insult.
Coke with a spanish pronouncations sounds like a rooster or ....
So I try not to attach too many meanings e.g. racist ones to everything I see. It is a natural thing here in our race burdoned society of evil white men to do.
I never said Tonto was "comedy relief", 'RBW', or I would have included him in my previous list. On the contrary, "The Lone Ranger" NEVER had a "comedic sidekick"....if I suggested otherwise, I apologize.
The "Wonder Dog". You got to like this! I watched this on TV as a kid, but it was on the radio too. Most of these kid shows were on the Radio up until about 1962. I liked the radio better as you could turn off the lights lay in bed and see everything in your mind. The "Wonder Dog": bark, bark. You say John fell down the abandon mine shaft located, 3.6 miles from here on the Swanson cut off road? Bark, bark, Lets ride to the rescue! Thanks Wonder Dog! Bark, bark. Those were the days.
When I was a kid that was one of the best TV shows on the air. Growing up on a cattle ranch, riding horses having our six gun cap pistols we loves those programs. Now days the kids don't get out of the house to have fun, they just sit and stare the computer or something stupid on TV.
Roy Rodgers, Fury, Flika, and Bonanza were top programs.
@dhansel001 Don't forget 'Rin-Tin-Tin out at old Fort Apache! Thanks for remembering Fury; I'd forgotten that one myself. I had a Nellie Belle jeep when I was a kid. Takes me back a ways...
BOB NOLAN & The Sons Of The Pioneers That's how they were billed in the movies.. Few leading ladies in B-Westerns are even remembered.. Dale Evans was a very real exception.. Soon, Dale Evans, and, later, Penny Edwards got top billing-3rd billing, after Trigger.. But, the audience, me included, loved her..
In the '50s, a TV Western hero wasn't worth his salt unless he had a sidekick that doubled as "comedy relief", 'ND'; Roy had Pat Brady, Gene Autry had the "other Pat" {Buttram}, "Wild Bill Hickok" {Guy Madison} had "Jingles Jones" {Andy Devine}, and "The Cisco Kid" {Duncan Renaldo} had "Pancho" {Leo Carrillo}....
Not quite right. The Lone Ranger's sidekick was Tonto. There was no comedy relief from Tonto. He was the Indian boy that lived in Tonto's tribe as a boy and who nursed him back to health later after he was ambushed. He could fight and shoot as good as the Ranger and throw a knife in addition. He also suggested where the bad guys might be to the Ranger as often as the Ranger might.
There's a few seconds snipped out at the beginning, where the show's title was flashed on screen, with the announcer billboarding, "'THE ROY ROGERS SHOW'...starring ROY ROGERS...". Probably because this was an original title with a sponsor's billboard {General Foods} in front that was lopped off...
Nice, but no sound

With the (possible) exception of the opening of "Superman," positively the coolest opening of any TV show, for a kid, in the '50s's.
Having our own "Trigger" was beyond most of us; having our own "Bullet" was somewhat more realistic.
(My own Bullet, too say nothing of my own Ace, the Bat-Hound, it was my privilege to share space with from 1989 to 2004, and his name was "Dash."
RIP Dashill Hammutt.)

Will they string him up? Take the law into their own hands? Stay tuned.
