  • Very beautifully played, from Keith Jarrett's heart and soul.

  • This video is popular on Maseru

  • Fantastic!!

  • One of the most glorious intros ever!

  • 3:07 was Gary playing the beginning of Mike Stern's 'Chromazone' or what?!

  • Il a péter , non ?

  • is this serious or just a fag festival ? Is he pooing ?

  • @ekstasin Your ignorance made me laugh... You're anyway not meant to watch, just listen... If I were there I'd have my eyes closed, this is ear candy, not eye candy, making faces is just a consequence from his digging deep into every sound.

  • i loved his earlier version in the 80's of funny valentine......with same standards trio......

  • Chemistry

  • I do ..he stil plays out of tune..and keith is so selfish it's laughable......why shouldn't i aggrandize myself.../.....I am grand.... I Play a grand ..but I'm surely not arrogant to think i should play for a grand per minute which jarrett feels he deserves for his exertions.....don't misunderstand me i love the harmonies and such of jarrett..but there is much he'd be happy to learn from me.....as well Ikeith likes me he laughed when i yelled out in one of his concerts that i wasn't bored....

  • will gary peacock ever play in perfect tune.....? it must be hard to control that mammoth bass ..keith is good..but damn he forces so much......too much would make one sick....the song is beautiful played in it's original simplicity......keith is always chipping away at something more esoteric....nice when achieves sweet melody.....check out rob ellis beethoven improv on utube if you want soulful improv...unabashed self promotion...here peace take care

peace.i like his 80-s version of valentine

  • @TheRobertEllismusic I have never sensed a greater cohersive attempt at self-agrandisement. Trying to take away the true genius of one of this era's jazz piano interpreters is shameful. As far as Gary is concerned... so what if there is an occasional intonation issue, most of the time Gary is a sensitive and accomplished bassist. Pay attention to your own issues and weaknesses..." judge not lest ye be judged".

  • @rmac1042 I'm not trying to take away anything..from true genius.... that's impossible...... E=mc2.....correct..?? nothing can be destroyed...but you forbidding me to express my opinions is truly the only shame here......but if something in the music feels wrong, I would doing free speech a disservice if i DID NOT comment on it..whether it's my own disgust at what I play or my dissatisfaction what someone else plays.. sir, you might benefit in taking Jarrett's attidude toward egoless ideas?PAX

  • @TheRobertEllismusic Keith Jarrett's ego is frightening. I do not excuse his antisocial behavior, believe me (though his course shenanigans may have ameliorated since his chronic fatigue syndrome episode). Thank God I can get beyond Keith's irritating personal peccadillos and just surround myself with the beauty of his sound and fertility of his imagination.

  • @rmac1042 I cannot tolerate your intolerance

  • @freedomfromthemind I can not tolerate your intolerance of the intolerant.

  • @rmac1042

i cannot separate music from personality ..to me they flow out of each other

  • bonjour, hello

an other version of "my funny valentine"

    deejay/tp

  • sorry i say this but in some way keith jarrett let's remind me 2 kareem abdul-jabbar :p but he's 1 of the greatest pianists ever ;)

  • I´m Breathless, this is just, Beautiful!!

  • I was fortunate to see Keith and his trio in concert many times. i saw the trio once at Carnegie Hall. All I can say is- amazing

  • A magical introduction. A magical ending. The rest is simply mesmorising. I can't tire of this medley. Jack's playing is also inspired - no brush strokes for him; but what sensitivity!

  • I remember that legendary base man LaFaro.

  • how is it possible someone can dislike this? he needs a facebook page so i can "like" him

  • Pretty good !! Beautiful

  • One of the greatest piano trios ever in jazz. What else more is there to say. Just gorgeous.

  • This is what we are as a race. Together with all the bad things, our cruelty and belligerence, we also are music and art and beauty. Mabe our virtues balance our flaws. Only time will tell. In the mean time some of us can have the privilege of enjoying things like Jarrett's talent.

  • @lurion

I'm sure you meant "species" rather than "race", right?

  • @lurion By race I hope you mean white people. The only black guy in that trio is Jack DeJohnette. Gary Peacock and Kieth Jarrett are both white. Keith is of Hungarian and Scottish decent. I can't lie though, he does like like he could be mix with black. I was pretty surprised myself when I found out he was white

  • @MCalixte89 Sure he is... I'm sure that's what his mother told his father in any event.

  • I believe that the video is recording that features on the Tokyo '96 album

  • high priests of humanity

  • beautiful

  • He is not "playing" piano, he is channeling the energy through it..

  • där spelar de i videon?

  • 2 people didn't think this was funny

  • This intro is absolutely beautiful but the intro on Still Live makes me weep. It's one of the most gorgeous pieces of improvised music to ever preface the performance of any standard. Ever.

  • the intro is directly from God!

  • Comment removed

  • @horvathivan please, never ever make this kind of random statement.

God?? what if KJ himself couldn't care less about God?

Let's stop mixing up things. Let's forget these fantasies created to explain the universe in a time when people didn't know absolutely anything about ourselves and the world, i.e, thousands and thousands of years ago!

THE INTRO IS DIRECTLY FROM KEITH JARRETT's TALENT. NOT FROM GOD nor Santa Claus.

  • @otavioandradas man your comment is amazin! shows that there's not just dumb ppl in the world ;)

  • @otavioandradas Oh, dear brother atheist! You do not need to be so rude to defend your faith in atheism! And be mindful that your frustration with reality does not make you the lord of truth!

  • @ppjjazz actually, I am not an atheist. To be an atheist one has to take a side about the existence or not of the fantasy called god. Since it's just a fantasy, an excuse, an invention, I don't take any sides. I'd rather pray for a horse, a fish, a piece of wood, a stone - those are not man-made fallacies. Exactly like this good music. It exists, it does not need to be explained through supernatural nonsense.

  • @otavioandradas Sure! So, you don't need to worry about questions that do not exist!

  • @ppjjazz i wish it was so simple. I do react to statements and actions that I consider to be a distortion of reality.

These statements and actions have had horrible consequences to the human race, including the killings of many people who dont believe in all that nonsense.

The people who believe in these fantasies are the ones who must stop worrying about the questions concerning the human race and the universe. They have their (fake) answers. I do not.

  • @otavioandradas Yes, people must react to what seams wrong for them. What I was saying is that we must not be so offensive, considering ourselves greater than the others, "the owner of all truth", saying that someone's question is illegitmate (and it's a question hold by the whole human race since we have notice!)

  • @otavioandradas About the historical argument, you should be aware that if you have your Ocidental culture, including your Scientific Revolution and the Arts, it's thanks to men like Descartes, Newton, Bach, Rembrandt, who only got their job done becouse of their faith! And one more thing - aren't you being narrow thinking all that terrible stuffs were made in the name of religion? You'd better look again and realise that this is a problem of mankind, not only the "religious" ones.

  • KJ is unique when he plays ballads.

    xF - Rio de Janeiro

  • The musik is good but he looks like he is on the toilett.

  • Fucking beautiful! I've heard it so many times and I' m still impressed

    Demn it!

  • God thank you for Jarret

  • this valentine isn't funny :)

  • this valentine isin't funny ;)

  • whoa

  • I wish the bass didn't sound like shit. It's ridiculous.

  • @OdinOurSaviour Something is wrong. He is Gary Peacock, a respected name in the jazz world. But here (and there) he sounds strange. Maybe because he was at first a science man - microbiologist, I believe :)

  • I would love to see : Keith Jarret, Charlie Hayden, Pat Metheny and Toots Thielemans together....what a dream!

  • that's art...

  • A Technical question:

What do you think about "Song"? Is it the final extension of "My Funny Valentine" or is it the new melody of the first chorus (played on the chord change of My Funny Valentine).

My opinion is the answer is the second one, because Jarrett incorporates "My Funny Valentine" inside his composition ("Song") and it starts at the second chorus,

    Let me know, Ciao RIno

  • 0 dislikes, thats fucking right

  • Jarrett has been around for such a long time and never been truly appreciated....amazing pianist.

  • @truro007 of course he has been appreciated.

even very much. but there is not enough appreciation you can show.

  • Listening to this on laptop speakers is like profanity, why can't I go louder...aaaa, hypnotized me :))

  • Some people can improvise so well that they don't even sound like they are composing spontaneously. I keep pressing the repeat button, the excellence of this piece is beyond my comprehension.

  • Am I in heaven? I don't want to ever stop listening to this!

  • @Lerneotine But, playing music isn't about being extraordinary, it's about creating something. Music, after all, is experienced in a way that is supposed to provoke emotion and imagination.

  • and what about the Massters Gary Peacock and Jack De Johnette?

  • What a great trio!

  • @Lerneotine

please search and listen on you tube " Jarrett umbria jazz 2007 ". I was there....How many times your idol did he play with Miles Davis? what is his influence in the jazz story? Like Monk? Like Bill Evans? Like Art Tatum ?

  • @billevanstime How long did Monk play with Miles???

The fact that you are a musician does not give any extra weight to your position - you are simply expressing your personal preferences - which is fine, but is not any reason for insulting KJ and everyone here who likes him. We're not comparing rock guitarists :-)

I love Pieranunzi but I wouldn't put him quite in the same class as Jarrett. Mehldau neither. Just my opinion.

Anyway, why did you "waste" your money on seeing Jarrett in Umbria???

  • @twangbarfly

I don't insult anyone. Please digit " Keith Jarrett Perugia" on "search" you tube and you have your answer.

  • @billevanstime With all due respect, what answer is there for me in that clip?

You don't like Jarrett's music, other people do. That's just your opinion. I think he's a great pianist, but a bit of an arsehole outside music - so what? Bill was a junkie - who cares? We listen to his music, we don't pore over his personal life. I won't pay top money going to see him because I don't like the way he treats the audience - but I still like his playing - a LOT!!!

  • @twangbarfly Yes, Bill was using drugs. Reading his biography (which obviously you don't know) you can understand (not justify). It was an own personal problem but he didn't insult the audience. Are two different things. Jarrett is a technically good pianist (as others) overestimated. Not a genius. A good marketing operation. IMHO.

  • @billevanstime Again, these are your opinions - you can dress them up all you like and try to support them with biography - what I'm saying is keep the life and the music separate. Which is why I mentioned Bill Evans - I LOVE Bill's music, as I love Jarrett's.

However, in my view there are hints of genius in his music, but that is just my view, others may agree or disagree. Some say Beethoven was a genius... Like others, I find much of his music boring, but mine is not the only viewpoint.

  • You may feel KJ is overrated - I feel some things like Köln have been hugely overrated, and I agree that it is a marketing phenomenon. But that's business for you. I'm pleased that he has been so successful so we can hear more of him, and I am pleased that the funds have allowed Manfred Eicher to bring lots of other great music to our attention through ECM. I am happy that this has been achieved through marketing at KJ's expense, even though KJ might prefer the money for himself!

  • @twangbarfly is easy to say overrated when you haven't done what he's done. Can you even play to his level? Did you know that the Koln Concert was entirely and improvisation? He improvised that whole concert, listen to the way he structured those songs during the concert, and how he formed he's melodic lines and used several alternate voicing going on simultaneously. You shouldn't use words like overrated as if its easy.

  • @MCalixte89 Yes, I know all about the Koln concert, the sickness, the poor piano... - the irony is that I was replying to someone criticising Jarrett. Read the conversation. 9 out of 10 people who know of Jarrett know him only though this record, and in that sense I feel it is overrated, i.e. in relation to the rest of his output. I simply mean that there is MUCH, MUCH more to KJ than simply the Köln concert! FYI I admire KJ's playing greatly and have dozens of his CDs (including Köln) :-)

  • his outros are always so perfect!

  • banal as usual....bill evans forever

  • @billevanstime , what a dickhead remark, you need to open your ears mate, bill evans is superb but but so are others. Get a larger listening base, you might grow up and develop.

  • @pianoman7256

Right. Bill is dead 30y ago...I'm developing forward Paul Bley , Brad Meldhau and the italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi. I don't love pianobar music.

  • Comment removed

  • @billevanstime, Yes great musicians but don't agree with the pianobar comment nor the developing forward, just adding to your listening base...glad you took my comments onboard !

  • @billevanstime piano bar music? So ignorant.

  • @6shamus5

yes i'm an ignorant musician. maybe. you are simply ignorant. We can discuss this question 30 y after your piano bar idol death. .Listen Brad Mehldau please and learn.

  • @billevanstime get a life

  • @billevanstime Brad Mehldau (whose name you misspelled) has said in interviews that Keith is a major influence on him and that he aspires to reach Keith's level of creativity.

  • also Jack and Gary are among the best!

  • This video alone changed my whole perception of jazz

  • I just can't get enough of that double bass solo. Simply a sensual performance from the jazz masters.

  • One of my very favorites and he does it so well!

  • 2:55 Keith it's tryng to say no to gary????

  • best ever performance

  • @pfmfan38

dude, that's the saddest question I've yet heard on YouTube.

  • Right, sorry, but I was misunderstood. I just thought that the sentence "Respect Keith Jarrett, man." was addressed to some other comment. I have removed mine now.

I, too, believe Jarrett is one of the greatest.

  • AWESOME!

  • また日本に来て欲しい。

  • Respect Keith Jarrett, man.

He is one of the best pianist of the world!

  • There's nothing he cannot play

  • Keith is the MAN !!!!

  • Yes, what dvd is this from?

  • from what DVD is that?

  • I love "My funny Valentine". And this version is great, too. I love it when keith jarrett plays ballads.

  • Heaven.

  • PauloTozzi I totally agree with you , that's why I love this trio :) Gary's melodic lines are also like that and Jack accomps. sublime.

  • kewl

  • This is a brilliant interpretation of this old standard. Love these guys, some of the best of their generation.

  • Keith creates melodic lines that are full of spirit

  • It's nice to see Jarretts' expresions while Peacock solos. At first he disslikes the harsh begining 2:39 but when peacock plays an amazing line 3:36 Jarrett smiles :)

  • @Bassko Yes. I thought so too. Peacock comes in 'pitchy' in a way that doesn't work for me at the onset but then moves into the beautiful.

  • @mateo2006 Sure i agree.....bass players are awesome.the ones that played were Oscar were impeccable.Ray Brown..etc...maybe in that trio, gary gets overwhelmed by the others intensity..bass plays a crucial role in a jazz trio.i've played in them they can cause the trio to soar or sink.or even more demanding, think.

I met Oscar Peterson once- a solo concert.got to go back stage and hang.wow..what a nice man.-wownever forget his kindness and genuine humanity..he remembered my first name at parting

  • 2:49 - without Gary Peacock

  • the best what i heard in my fucking life ....

  • in my fucking life too! best fucking piano play!

  • and in my fucking life lol.

the best fucking formation in jazz today, So proclaim the great Popes of the specialty and the public countersigns. Point

  • @pianistobella In your fucking life? So I guess since you were 16/17? :p

  • great pianist!

  • ...amazing...

  • 0:00 - 1:30 fantastic

  • aufait demain c est la saint valentin je dedie ce morceau delicat a mon epouse qui j espere appreciera excuse moi milesje prefere cette version
