Dumb question ahoy! The "nice and cheap" Alesis Monitor1 Mk2 are passive monitors, does that mean you'd need to buy an amplifier to power them? Would it be more cost-effective to just buy powered monitors?

From personal experience, the KRK Rokit 5's are very good speakers for the price range, possibly the best. I went around to a lot of places and compared side by side, and I thought the Rokits were the best pick ($300 for a pair).

The Yamaha 5's were also amazing, but they were $400 for a pair. Personally, i didnt hear a $100 difference from the two.

Just my $0.02, might help someone :D

That's funny. I was rebuilding my bedroom studio when Dave did the tour of his a while ago, so I took notes from that. But I already had Alesis M1 Actives (Mark I originals) from the previous build, and I had grown used to their sound, so I kept them.

if anyone is interested in monitors have a look at the KRK rokit 5's. I've worked with the Alesis, and if you don't have a massive space for the sub frequencies to disburse into then they can really upset your mix. or at least this is what i found :D. x
