  • What would be the proper ratio (water) if I only wanted to cook 1/2 cup Quinoa at a time please? Thank you.

  • @nemoryer For 1/2 cup of dry quinoa use 7/8 cup water

  • quinoa hhmmm :)

  • the blonde girl is from modern family!

  • I thought the blonde gal was funny.

  • I looked up how to make quinoa and don't give a rats ass about some attention seeking idiot. Lose the pathetic blond girl. Yuck!!!

  • Wow, the stupid blonde girl made this video retarted.

  • Jamie, get off the DRUGS!!!!! Dumb ass!!!!

  • thank-you I just bought some in bulk and needed to know how to prepare it.

  • The chewing ditzy blond should be confined and not a part of the very nice lady doing the quinoa demo.

  • what the hell just happened... I just started cleaning up my diet and I absolutely love quinoa.

  • Screw the quinoa, I want you :D

  • Cute. I like your stuff.

  • I love your cooking show, I use your ideas all the time! Shockingly enough I think the annoying adult child was really funny in this video.

  • IT IS NOT A GRAIN !!!!

  • @RimlandThesis Check out the comments Rimland. Already heard this, already know this. Yes yes it's a seed, but we use it as a grain in the culinary world.

  • @RimlandThesis

stop being soooooo darn critical - be quiet and go do you're own video.

@ cook - thank you for this video!!!!!

  • @RimlandThesis

i know, it is actually a seed

  • @RimlandThesis Most commonly considered a grain, quinoa is actually a relative of leafy green vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard. It is a recently rediscovered ancient "grain" once considered "the gold of the Incas."

  • great stuff. just cooked a pot up before...only problem is it sticks to your teeth and looks funny!

  • Thanks for the great video! Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find other commenters noting that quinoa is not a grain but rather a seed and is gluten free.

  • You are very relaxing to watch and listen to - then that loud, annoying female interrupts, causing us to want to stop playing your calm, thoughtful video. Please make her go away.

  • Gonna make it for the first time NOW. Hopefully I won't be disappointed :)

  • ok first off the random lady was HILARIOUS! but nay way yea quinoa is EXCELLENT! def a perfect sub. for vegans and delicious too :)

  • I bought some in bulk so I have to rinse mine with a strainer. How long do I rinse? and with hot or cold water? I am a guy who doesn't cook well so I have to ask the dumb questions....Also I would like to see Jane's band on the show, singing the "cooking quinoa" song.

  • All quinoa coming into US pre-rinsed - even in bulk. No need to rinse.

  • @cookusinterruptus

    Thank you..

  • where can i get quinoa

  • Most grocery stores carry it. All natural foods grocery stores (like Whole Foods) carry it. You can also buy it online.

  • you make quinoa fun

  • there are 9 essential amino acids to a complete protein, not 8... sorry, just had to correct.

  • quinoa is not grain, surprisingly it belongs to the same family as spinach

  • Who the hell was that random lady in the video?

  • Thats a great video

  • I agree with Stonewalljackson7; I eat very little salt due to blood pressure issues. Sugar is off limits and starch is limited to a small potato once or twice a week. I bought some quinoa yesterday and am going to try & cook some tonight, to accompany some navy beans.

  • the blond is a female Jack Black

  • Many thanks for this clip. I used to live in Peru but don't recall eating quinoa. Now I intend to cook it regularly as it appears to be a very nutricious and healthy grain.

  • please, no salt for me, why ruin a good thing with salt

  • The salt is very important in cooking whole grains. It helps the grain open up and brings out the natural sweetness in the grain. That is why there is always salt in sweet baked goods.

  • No salt for me, drives up the blood pressure, mine has dropped almost 30 points since giving up salt entirely, sweet baked goods are nutritionally garbage, avoid at all costs

  • Check out the book Real Food by Nina Planck and read the section on salts. Our westernized version of salt is garbage....natural sea salt that hasn't been processed has many trace minerals.

Another good way to lower blood pressure is hot yoga. Exercise in general is of course good for you.

  • Sea salt does have trace minerals and is a tiny improvement, but basically salt is salt and the less you use the better off you are. The three S's that will destroy your health are Sugar, Salt and Starch. Minimize use of all three.

  • "Makin' up some quinoa! Really good for you!" Thanks for the video!

  • I love this video so much! It's such a simple help! I had never made quinoa because it seemed hard and confusing. Your very cute and delightful show makes it's a breeze! Thanks! I'm totally going to have to look at more of your videos!

  • castodivo,

What a sweet comment. Our "real " website (cookusinterruptus (dot) com houses are full stable of videos, plus menu ideas, recipes and blog.

    Cynthia

  • Nice show. Will try. Great help

  • elim12345

Try it 3x before you give up. I't's a wonderful grain, uh seed, uh berry. Whatever. I eat it, culinarily speaking, as a grain.

  • Just a side note...Quinoa is really a berry, not a grain at all.

  • Thanks! Great video. I needed to know how to cook some for breakfast and had no instructions. You saved the day! A friend told me to eat it with a teaspoon of coconut oil, some salt, and pepper. Yum! (coconut oil is good for you and won't make you fat, she says).

  • "makin' up some quinoa!" haha

  • perfect! Thank you for your kind comment. Written and printable recipes on our cookusinterruptus site.

    Cynthia

  • Very entertaining video! Thanks, gonna cook my quinoa tomorrow and I might even sing while i'm doing it!

  • thnx for the vid. was wondering what this stuff was I passed up in the bulk foods section of the market each week. gonna give it a go. cheers, d'P

  • how much dry quinoa did you use with the 1 and 3/4 cups of water? Was that one cup of dry quinoa?

  • SheDirX

Thanks for watching our videos on You Tube. If you go to our actual Cookus Interruptus site all of the recipes are posted just below the video screen. I used 1 cup of dry quinoa.

    Cynthia

  • Hey! Thanks! Don't let these negative people bring you down. I think your show is fantastic!

  • You are wasting our time with the silly chum chewing woman (rude) with her shrill voice.

You did not say anything about cleanining the quinoa before cooking, to remove the bitter taste of unwashed cooked quinoa. But the 15 mins cooking time is a good tip.

    Thank you.

  • Sorrowek,

Quinoa purchased in stores in the U.S. has been pre-washed to remove the saponin - a natural insect repellant that causes the grain to be bitter.

    Cynthia

  • The other girl with a pony tail is really annoying!

  • Thanks! I tried it this way as opposed to browning it in oil first, I absolutely LOVE it, I've never had it al dente, it is perfect! :)

  • Sorry pathu32! Didn't mean to annoy. I LOVE the video with the lady, who is easy to follow and has a wonderful smile. Enjoyed it. Happy that several came onboard to talk about the seed as not a grain. It's important to know, because many people have been told to not eat grains for health reasons, and then don't eat Quinoa as a result. So sorry if I sounded critical - didn't mean to. Never wrote on any blog or YouTube before. Will be more careful in future. Appreciate you pointing it out to me.

  • quinoa is from south america from Peru and Bolivia the quinoa is good I can make tortillas

  • i can make tortillas! LOL great ending!

  • who is that other woman? she is SO ANNOYING!!

  • FYI: Quinoa is NOT a grain. It's a seed. It is pure protein, in the same way as sunflower seeds, etc. Just wanted people to know this. Better to have the facts right.

    Thank you.

    Kathryn

  • Hi Kathryn, Like kasha, quinoa is a seed that is considered a grain; the difference being that you cannot simme sunflower seeds and have them open up and become a dish that can be served like rice or cous cous. Quinoa is not pure protein. Though is does contain all 8 amino acids, it is only 12-18% protein, it has ~5x more carbohydrate than protein.

    Cynthia

  • Thanks. Everyone calls Quinoa grain - on this video, too. I know it's not 'pure' protein, but does have more protein as a seed. Vegetarians know to eat seeds/nuts for protein without meat. Quinoa can also replace wheat in tabouli (for those allergic). Can't tell the difference. I have never done this YouTube. Certainly didn't mean to degrade the quality of the video. Hope it wasn't taken that way. It is great for people who don't know. The lady has a beautiful smile - very nice! Thanks!

  • ummm you realize all grains are seeds... You're right that quinoa isn't a grain, but its because its not the seed of a grass. It's the seed of a fruit.

Grains are the seeds of grass.

  • this is great. i thought it was entertaining and had some good tips on how to cook quinoa. thanks!

  • Thanks! This helps!

  • don't you need to rinse it first to remove the bitter taste??

  • Good question! The grain is now pre-rinsed before it is sold in the store, even when sold in bulk. When it first came on the market in the 80s the natural coating on quinoa (saponin - which detracts birds and insects)made it best to rinse the grain with warm water before cooking. Otherwise there was a bitter flavor. Nowadays it is hard to find quinoa that hasn't been pre-rinsed.

    Cynthia

  • When I bought some at Whole Foods, they didn't say it was pre-rinsed. It's good to know that it should be pre-rinsed because I have no idea of how I would rinse it without letting a lot of it get away.

  • this is the first video i watched on your channel and its brilliant! i love the comedy mixed in!

  • Thanks maha77! We appreciate your support. You can find recipes, blog entries and more at our url. Tell us what you'd like to see us cook!

    Cynthia

  • I will definitely check out your url! I love that you focus on whole foods, which is the main type of food I prepare. I would love tips on ways to prepare the basic dishes with more variety: brown rice and other grains, veggies, soba noodles & greens. I usually resort to some Tamari and Sesame Oil and basic condiments. For example, your video on Mediterranean Quinoa was very helpful, I never thought of using feta cheese and currents with it and I tried it and loved it!

  • informative and funny too! so true.

  • my daughter introduced us to this stuff after her trip to so. america. good stuff all around

  • I just bought my first 500 gram bag of Quinoa yesterday and am delighted to have found your vid because now I actually know what to do with it :)))) Thanks!

  • Excellent! Watch How to Cook Mediterranean Quinoa Salad for more delicious ideas on how to use quinoa.
