It was due to the expense. WSK has fallen on hard times in the last decade due to increasing costs and dwindling financial support. However, I understand things have improved somewhat recently, allowing them to make much needed repairs to the old palace they call home. I don't know if that means individual training has returned.
Terry and his younger brother Lorin were among the choir's best soloists in recent memory. WSK's sound has suffered since they've cut back on individual voice training. They're still good, but there are many better choirs in Europe now. Check out the Tolzer Knabenchor, considered by many now to be one of the very best in the world.
A little problem developed between the woman who was the primary vocal coach (who was also the mother of Max Emanuel Cencic!!) and choir administration, which at that time was also a woman. You know the "queen bee" concept? Well, that was a part of it. Also, the administrator thought Max's mom was working the boys too hard. So they went from "very ideally trained" to"not trained at all" and the job of teaching voice training was left to the individual Kapschis - unfortunately!
what is Kapschis? I never thought the choir is lacking of funding. But again the boys are allowed to join for free as long as they have talents is that right?
Yes, there was a period of time just after the turn of the century when income was not very good, and expenses piled up. As I understand it, the Institute had to become very frugal in order to survive.
The boys literally "sing for their supper" and education, of course, up to high school graduation, even when their voices change well before that time.
maestrovoci...thank you for your information on the decline of training in the choir. It is an old story....but who would have thought it could have hit the WSK in such a devastating way. "queen bee" is a very accurate.
