  • It was fine till those last few notes.... ouch! Michelle I love you, but no.

  • I love Michelle, but this just doesn't seem like a fit. She doesn't have the "evil" side of her that is required for this. That's why Madonna worked so well. Michelle's voice would have been just fine though.

  • Catwoman can sing?

  • Michelle era troppo bella per fare Evita. c'era bisogno di una donna più ordinaria come Madonna. Sarebbe stata una bella scelta quella di Ken Russell con Liza Minelli

  • I always wondered why they didn't go ahead with Michelle.....

  • no matter how much you hate on Madonna...or how they had to change this and that..blah blah blah...she won a golden globe for it...and i thought she did a wonderful job

  • I like it.

  • i don't think i could sit through 3 hours of this. ouch and yikes.

she was fine at cat woman . . . but that's another role that madonna should of have had.

  • Pfeiffer does not have the voice or character powerful enough to have played "Evita." Madonna was the right choice for the part.

  • @klutzmobeel if you think Madonna has the range to sing Evita then you don't know the show. It had to be dropped so many keys

  • Madonna looks like Evita and has the quiet and understated sex appeal of her. Michelle Pfeiffer cant sing either.

  • She seems like the most beautiful woman on the planet.

  • i love evita the musical(movie to a less degree) but a hybrid of Pfifer/Madonna - would be ideal IMHO, Madonna's voice and Michele's face - epic win

  • Icky, Madonna was a lousy choice too.

  • I love me some Madonna and Michelle. But neither of them has the range or belt needed for this part. They had to do some serious dumbing down for the film so Madonna could hit the notes. I think Meryl Streep would have been better. She's got the vocal chops and (I hate to say it since I love all three of them) she can act circles around the other two. But she's the same age as Patti LuPone, who was denied the role because she was too old (They actually offered her the part of Evita's mother).

  • @MrsWillShakes13 Meryl Streep? She can't sing, have you seen Mama Mia?! She could act this, no doubt, but the songs would have to be dubbed. But I agree, she is probably a better actress. (LuPone could do it, but as you said age was a factor).

  • @MrsWillShakes13 Ken Russell wanted to film EVITA in the very early 80s with Liza Minelli. I would've loved to see that version, but I think Madonna was incredible in the 90s film.

  • Yikes!

  • Madonna should have won an oscar for Evita. She was perfect. But I am pretty impressed with Michelle Pfeiffer's voice here and she certainly would have looked good in the role. I can't imagine Meryl Streep playing it at all - despite being so incredible in Mama Mia!

  • @rees276 WHAT? OMG Mamma Mia??? That was a HORRIBLE film!!!! Yikes, and the singing was REPULSIVE! OMG, listening to those people sing was like pealing the paint off a new Porsche! YUCK

  • I actually like this. The expressiveness fits the song. Not the strongest vocal but I think it would've been stronger after she got the role and worked on it a little more.

  • Michelle Pfeiffer is a good singer, but not here. Hairspray and Grease 2 for example. I think they made the better choice with Madonna.

  • God this is awfully

  • sorry michelle but you sound like a cat being gang raped

you belong to roles where you gotta show some skin.

  • Wow, that was weak. Glad they passed on her.

  • Weak Singing and no phrasing. I think that a Latin American or Spanish singer should have been chosen for the film version to give it more authenticity. Madonna was lukewarm with a limited range.

  • Not the best here. Shame because she has shown in the past that she could sing (she sang the hell out of "Cool Rider" in Grease 2).

  • better than madonnas version by a mile

  • BAD

thanks God Madonna won this role!!! Webber said Madonna's voice was perfect

webber insisted the recording to be LIVE and withoyt studio stuff so Madonna made it. Thanx to Evita cause Madonna took a lot of vocal lessons

  • Frankly I love Ms P and I think that the off notes heard here are a feedback issue, let's be honest, Madonna ain't no wonderful live singer. Madonna sold the film, that was (at the time) what was needed. Although I think Ms P would have given a far more gritty performance. There are times during the film that I get my friends to pour hot tea in my eyes as the acting is so bad I want to go blind.... Ms P would have been real... God Bless M, although can someone teach her to speak?

  • Hi everybody! As argentinian I must say that Madonna was just fine, till the final part, cause she was fat,and Evita at her last moments, was extremely thing cause of her condition.Nevertheless I would love Michelle instead of Madonna. From my point of view,Michelle is classy,Madonna is not.

  • @QueenAlexandra2007 the reason why she was "fat" as you say was because she was pregnant.

  • I grew up listening to Patti as Evita & she struggled with music (read her memoirs) But, honestly, Madonna was great for that part. She had what it takes. And, the last part made you believe she was sick and dying. Sorry, but she was the right one for the part....Not this one.

  • @HRHQueenMabb : Well Madonna was great for the part because they lowered the whole score at least a third.

  • People are unhappy about Madonna because she vocally wasn't right for the part and they had to butcher the score to suit her.

  • She wasn't that bad.......until the end.

  • guess this proves the old saying.."looks are decieving"!! LOL!

  • Whoever told Michelle Pfeiffer she could sing needs to be shot

  • I do love Michelle Pfeiffer, but this is quite horrible. I hate Madonna, and yet think she is marvellous in Evita.

  • gwen stavani would have been good, mind you i dont know if she can act.

  • thank GOD she didnt get this part!

  • no its not a tranished opinion its a difference between class and style. One is Royalty the other just rich you decide. I think anybody with class and style understands the difference

  • I so agree!!! Madonna is not giving props like she should be.....She perforemd it very well and the music as well!!! No she is no Soprano like most of them but she did a bang up job none-the-less!!!!

  • that is amazing as it has not been editing she has such a soothing voice<3

  • she is good

  • Is there anyway I can download this?xx

  • @nancyxxM Play it and record it via your computer's sound recorder then convert to an mp3 - BAM! :)

  • Michelle sounds too whiny and WAY too high pitched! I'd rather hear Madonna sing this!

  • Not bad.

  • This is a DEMO, her voice was not altered AT ALL. Listen to Madonna's on youtube, her voice has been altered and enhanced like crazy. Many parts have echo in it, or its volume was heightened. Madonna's voice is very average, she relies on performance (I give her credit for that). Michelle Pfeiffer's voice is just as good, esp when given the same post production work. MP didn't do the end well, but Madonna didn't even try it, bc she cannot hit the notes either (neither can).

  • I think it's amazing~ Though I might just be saying that because I'm an obsessed Pfeiffer Fan and don't like Madonna that much, but whatever. :P

  • I <3 Michelle Pfeiffer!!!!!!!

  • Nothing against Michelle Pfeiffer but she would not have sold movie tickets or gotten the press Madonna did for taking the role, which made people go see it. Her voice is also very thin in these demos. I have not liked everything Madonna has done, but you have to give her credit for fighting to play Evita and doing a damn good job for a pop star who has little experience. She also looks damn good in those costumes. Not to mention the parallels between Madonna and Eva Peron.

  • CAN WE FIND THE SOUNDRACKS OF EVITA RECORDED BY MICHELLE PFEIFFER IN A CD AND IF YES WHAT'S THE CD'S TITLE? :p

  • She's not a professional singer like Madonna, but I think she does one hell of a job. It's a powerful part for a non-prof singer, but Michelle proofed that she can sing in 'the fabulous baker boys'. With a little more practising she'd get her voice together, and would sound even more amazing!

Madonna did a great job as Eva, to be honest though.

  • This is a demo. And Madonna had 6 months of singing lessons before recording, which Pfeiffer would have had too. Pfeiffer would have been a MUCH better Eva...problem is the movie sitll would have sucked because Parker didn't understand the story, the lyrics or the point of the whole thing.

  • Pfieffer would have been better than Madonna,

but this role called for a European actress,

like a young Catherine Duneuave, or however you spell her name.

Eva was a mysterious foreign lady,

and American actressess are not all that mysterious.

Michelle Pfieffer is a fine singer,

and Madonna is an overrated singer, as far as voice goes.

Problem also is the film should have been made 15 years earlier,

it was no longer "eagerly awaited" when it came out,

    and musicals were long dead.

  • I have a feeling Michelle would have acted the hell out of this movie.

I Loved Madonna's version, and I guess we'll never know. But I know Michelle's acting is just "too good to miss."

  • I don't like Madonna much either, but I must def. say she did a great job with 'Evita' & I don't know why she got such crap from everyone..weird...but anyway, I absolutely LOVE Michelle Pfeiffer! But I don't know if her voice is nearly strong enough to have done 'Evita'..Of course, she was fine in 'Hairspray!'

  • Her singing gets better as the song progresses but it's too shaky, unsteady, and would end up being more distracting than anything, and therefore, wouldn't work.

  • Sorry. This just doesn't work for me.

  • The best one for this role was Patti LuPone without any doubt

  • I'm actually impressed with Michelle's singing. I didn't expect her voice to be as good as it is.

  • @LePoseurVegan Watch The Fabulous Baker Boys,

    her best performance.

She proves she can sing there.

The song in this video stinks by the way,

and even though Michelle can sing,

I have to agree that none of the alternatives capture the character

of Eva Peron better that Patti Lupone.

  • to be fair, she's easier on the eye than madonna.

and i dont think she's terrible at all. not a singer, certainly, but i actually think she has quite a pleasant voice to listen to. :)

  • Michelle Pfeifer has got a very good voice (even though sometimes she goes a bit over the top)... I'm impressed. However, Madonna was simply perfect! She may not have a wonderful voice, but the emotion she puts in every word makes it up. And, hell, her singing lessons paid off. Madonna's voice is very good in the film. And even when she did "You must love me" live, it was amazing.

  • madonna rocks.. Thisi is too bad

  • She can´t do it any better tan Madonna did it. She cant transmit anithing, very bad singer.

  • oh make the singing stop.....it hurts.

  • I don't know why everyone says Madonna's is better. Her version had a ton of help from the studio mix. Just listen to it on youtube and you'll hear the many enhancements. Then look up any live performance of Madonna where she's really singing and she sounds horrible. Madonna didn't attempt the end of this song. If MP were cast, they would've left that part out too. I don't think Meryl could've gone high enough for those notes either.

  • madonna's version is better and is true...... this version probably had a ton of help from the studio mix........ listen buenos aires by michelle pfeiffer is horrible

  • wow, thats the best (most polished) i've heard michelle pfeiffer sing, and that includes her role in the Prince of Egypt movie/OST. however, madonna was still the best possible choice for the film IMO, and did a terrific job; the key to her success in the role, despite her not having A Voice, is her impressive characterization of the lyrics, emotions and scenes - which michelle, sorry to say, couldn't quite keep up in this demo, IMO. still love her though! ---- oh, and Patti LuPone Is A GODDESS.

  • Why was Patti Lupone not considered for the movie? She would probably have rocked it! I personally didn't think Madonna did a bad job, and we all know Michelle Pfeiffer can act, just wondering why they didn't really try with the "original" Patti from Broadway.

  • i think i read/heard somewhere 2 different rumours about that: 1. she was too old for the role by then (she was 30 in '79 i think, so '79->'96?), and 2. she and andrew lloyd webber had a huge fight and falling out.........er, or was that about the musical production? meh.

  • Hm, I never heard of them having a big disagreement like that. Too bad, I love Patti. The age thing makes some sense too, but it's film, they could easily have worked around that. Wikipedia says it's age, and that Patti was asked if she wanted to play Evita's mother but she refused. Seems to me like the idea of there being a fight of some kind is the most likely.

  • Patti LuPone was far too old by the time the film was made.

  • @MithraMusic I love Patti but she was too old at the time, and would have had to have been digitally remastered to look the right age. (think Jar Jar Binks.) So they had to find someone younger. It's a shame Gloria Estefan didn't take the role, she would have really made it work.

  • @GoddessofCoruscant I can't pretend Madonna didn't do a good job though lol.

  • @MithraMusic right, she did. But she cannot hold a candle to Patti!

  • @GoddessofCoruscant We're definitely in agreement there. She's such an incredible performer.

  • @MithraMusic yes. I'm a fan of both Madonna and Patti though. Patti and Madonna are both icons in their own right in my opinion. It's just IMO Madonna did not have the voice for a role like in Evita. That role is and will always belong to Patti LuPone. Madonna is a singer, not an actress. Patti is both.

  • madonna do it better!!!

  • wth is going on?

  • Michelle is about equal to Madonna here (passable). If you want to hear a REAL singer do this, check out Patti Lupone's "A new Argentina" (the same melody). Quite a difference.

  • I think she would've been fine in the movie as they would've mixed her voice to fix it's weaknesses. Same as they do with Madonna every track on her album, as they did in the movie. Of course, I think Meryl Streep would've been the best. She was in the running, too.

  • u know, i think exactly the same as i am a meryl streep fan! but the idea of meryl as evita is weard. i am argentinian and i know evita`s face like the back of my hand haha. i find it weard beacuse there's no similarity in their faces. u wouldnt have found it weard because u may not be as familiarized with her face as we may be.. but annnnnyway, meryl would have given SUCH a WONDERFUL perfomance that no face would matter. hahaha AND SHE WOULD HAVE COME TO ARGENTINAAAAAA !!!

  • for a non singer, michelle has a nice voice. she just needed a little coaching. but madonna had the nuts for the role. and that atonal part at the end is written that way musically. . .

  • oh my....

  • LMFAO at 4:12

  • but is michelle pfeiffer to sing ???

  • madonna wins the day on this one.

  • Eahhhh thats terrible.

She should stick to the lower pitch songs....maybe.

  • Acting wise Michelle shits all over Madonna. But Evita is mostly singing and Madonna is a far better singer they went with the right choice

  • Hate to say this but I'm not a big fan of her singing. I think Madonna was the better choice.

  • Thanks for posting this -- I hadn't heard Michelle Pfeiffer's version of this until now. Unfortunately, she's not as vocally right for the role as Madonna was. She has the right look, but Madonna suited the role best. Madonna was the right choice.

  • Michelle is great!

But the best actress for this role was Elena Rogers ( a true argentinan) and the best actress and singer for the role.

  • Por favor, dejen de representar a Evita, Elena Roger es la mejor Evita de la historia, ni Micelle ni Madonna le pueden poner el sentimiento que necesita esta obra.

  • she sounded great until the end.

  • I like Michelle Peiffer. I think she is sexy as hell. But all these talks about she should have gotten the role or meryl streep should have ... u know what? the producers made the right decision for choosing Madonna - she won best actress for the role in the Golden Globe.

  • @Vlum88 Had this film been made between 1981 and 1984,

    when it should have,

I'm guessing Patti Lupone would not have been a big enough name to get it bankrolled,

and the ever lurking Meryl Streep would have starred.

I think there were one or two non-musical TV Movies on Eva's life.

  • You did a god job with the photos you choose for this soundtrack.

  • 4:13

    o_O!

  • she sounds horrible at the end

  • I agree! At the end this is just horrible!

I love Michelle as an actress and that's all about it.

As a singer, Madonna is 100 times better.

  • Juile Covington and Elaine Paige are the best versions of this song but full marks for Michelle singing it in a decent register... unlike Madonna

  • Michelle is a goddess!!!

  • MADONNA DOES IT BETTER!

  • Michelle has a lovely voice. No, it's not Broadway Belting out diva powerful. But, I like her voice much better than Madonna's! She would have been gorgeous in this role, too.

  • Snap...off key... Sorry. Two Words... Patti LuPone!

  • She wasn't off key, she at least managed to stay that way but she sounds terrible, strained and too self-aware of her singing to sound decent.

Patti is fantastic! She at times overdoes it but dang can she overdo it better than anyone can! My fave Evita is still Julie Covington from the original album, who I think Madonna tried to emulate

  • it's beautiful

  • Michelle you are CATWOMAN!

  • Her voice hurts my ears. O.o I like her as an actress, but I prefer Madonna for this song and movie.

  • I agree Madonna was the best for the part of Evita far ahead of anyone else!!

  • I do like the way she says "Yes! ...oh yes."

  • It's a little creepy... during this song all I can think of is Michelle shouting CRABS in Hairspray.

  • She is a wonderful actress, a great beauty but a lousy singer, Madonna is not much better but at least she projects some force, power, and that is what Eva was. Glad she didn't play Evita.

  • Don't understand why people can't give Madonna credit for playing the role of Eva Peron. Is it because they let her tarnished image affect their opinion? I don't particularly like Madonna, but putting aside any negative feelings, I realize she was great in this role!

  • I don't take anything into consideration when criticizing actresses in musicals..Madonna was terrible at the part. She sounded so strained to even vocalise and not to mention how they lowered the key to EVERY SINGLE TRACK on this musical to suit her limited range. It was just bad. But I will be honest..I didn't like Evita film not just because of Madonna, but also for the equally awful Antonio Banderas singing Che, who is the main star of the musical really

  • I AGREE!!!!

  • @burbonboy Well, let's see.... She was too old, gave a dull one note performance, couldn't sing the original key and tempo of the score.... Need more reasons?

  • i love michelle and i adore her voice !

  • terrible

  • Madonna looked appropriate for Eva but she wasn't good enough vocally, which was a great shame. Michelle would probably have acted it better, and would have looked great, but she was nowhere even close with the voice.

  • Michelle is very talented in everything she does and I love her voice<3

  • No way,she would not have been a good Eva,Madonna was right to write to the director telling him her thoughts and why she should play Eva.Michelle would just not have been right for the part

  • didn't Evita help/allow a bunch of innocents to be killed?

  • @CiaoCucin sorry for replying to your comment so late. She didn't kill them, no. But she allowed them to be tortured, which is almost as bad.

  • @GoddessofCoruscant there is not the slightest shred of evidence that Eva participated in torture. NONE whatsoever. That is malicious rumour fuelled by the Black Myth of Eva Peron. Cite your sources? Even Mary Main, who wrote the WOMEN WITH THE WHIP stated "there is no proof" for her claims. All historians who have researched Evita have denounced those claims. That is a fact.

  • @EnzFab73 I get your point, however, torture did occur during the Peronist regime. It's impossible that she didn't know about it. With the power Peron allowed her to have, she could have said something about it or tried to stop it. However, she didn't, which, IMO speaks volumes about her true character. Eva was vengeful towards her enemies, and very capable of cruelty.

  • @EnzFab73 however, I must say that I have seen your posts on Che Guevara, and you are right on the money there. At least we can agree on him.

  • Madonna is not a great actress, but she was a perfect Evita... I don't think they could have chosen any other performer for the role.

  • Uh Thank You! We'll call you.

  • I have never even seen this because I just can't stand Madonna. Of course, I have heard Madonna singing the songs, and they suck of course. But, I will say that I understand why they didn't use Michelle. Although, I adore her!

  • My opinion: Evita Peron was ugly. And so is Madonna. Michelle Pfeiffer is like an angel. So, I thing the casting was perfect. Madonna was just the right person to play Evita

  • What stupid comment! lol

  • Comment removed

  • Michelle Pfeiffer isn't as good a singer as the rest of the original Evitas (Julie Covington, Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone) but she is still MILES better than Madonna. At least this demo is in the original key, they lowered the songs at least 2 octaves for Madonna in the film.

And mind you, these are LIVE screen test demoes, meaning they are actually extracted from a video tape (it will be interesting to see her sing these live if they turn up)

  • i like this vesion, she singer very well.

it is a complete actress sing, dance is very well both dramas and comedies, but it lacks even an Oscar, let's see if this is the movie with Chéri.

  • i think this song was too high 4 Michelle 2sing. shes done 4 movies where she sings, including 2 musicals so it is obvious she could hav been great for dis movie but she isnt a professional singer like Madonna is so Michelle would hav just needed a lot of vocal coach just so she could get the words and notes flowing well without straining or falling short. she sings good here but there were a good amount of bad notes too. by the way Michelle is my favorite actress so dont get mad at me for this.

  • Madonna had a lot of vocal training for the role. If you listen to her albums after Evita such as Ray of Light which was the first one after - you can tell the difference before and after. I think Evita was the best thing to happen to Madonna. She did the musical and the story justice. Maybe there would be a better person if the film was made now (though it would probably consist of the cast of HSM!!) But at the time this film was release, they couldn't have chosen a better person.....

  • Couldn't have put it better myself.

  • Madonna was the original actress for the fabulous baker boys or at least the offer was extended to her first. the roles were reversed with Evita. funny how life turns out.

  • don't forget "Batman Returns". Madonna was considered for it but she chose to do another film instead.

  • one word describes michele magnificently beautifual if ya look real close at this video ya can she that she and the late evita have one thing in common hauntingly classic beauty !! in my opinion both are goddess and both women are hauntingly beautifual !!

  • I am not gonna lie-I think Madonna did a good job as Evita in the movie. All but the death scene, as I find myself laughing. She would not do well on the stage. This recording is not bad, but I believe the casters chose the right person-Madonna's somewhat harsher(not exactly the right word, but I hope you get what I mean) sound is better.

  • dont like...no!

  • Madonna did a good job in the movie, but she is not as good as Patti La Pone. Patti is the best Evita.

  • I'm amazed how much people disagree on this. We have to remember that this is an un-"varnished" recording of Michelle who, let's face it, kicked ass singing in "The Fabulous Baker Boys". If she had taken Evita to the screen it would have been fantastic (though I admit maybe a little nasal). But no disrespect to Madonna - the finished film was spectacular, and her performance moving and meticulous. Would love to have seen Patti LuPone, Elaine Paige or Julie Covington do it years ago though.

  • I really love Michelle and Meryl but how is possible someone think both could make a better Eva Péron than Madonna? OMG let's try to forget some other movies from Madonna, Evita is her best movie and for sure her best performance as an actress. Sorry but I just can't imagine Evita with no Madonna face, voice and crying on this movie. She was brilliant and for that she won a Golden Globe so... it doesn't matter her other movies cause in Evita she's just like any great other actress.

  • Well Said :)

WIithout Madonna Evita Wouldn't Have Been So Good :)

    She Made That Movie :D

  • Comment removed

  • I hated Madonna in the movie, there is only one person that plays Evita and that is the original broad/dame.

  • wow she sounds vile

  • Even with her limited range, Madonna is a way better singer than Michelle. On the other hand, she is a brilliant actress, something that Madonna will never be.

  • Nobody could have done this role...Madonna WAS Evita full stop.

  • madonna sounded sooooo much better.

  • Interesting Demo for Pfeifer. Sounds a lot of work had to be done for this role. without a doubt - Madonna did a great performance. pfeifer's singing would not have delivered the vocals lows Madonna worked on. anyway, its the past. I'm more interested in pfeifer's new roles to come.

  • Madonna was MADE for Evita. Like it or not.

  • Meryl Streep should have gotton the role.

  • Agreed.

  • Original Dame or Meryl Streep oh got shivers thinking about it

  • Holy crap... She's good! Madonna made me want to run for the hills...

  • she really excels with the lower notes, that's her range, this is way too high.

  • Ugh, I love Michelle, she is gorgeous but that role and that song were made for Madonna..period..end of story.

  • Debbie Harry would have been a great Evita, if it were done in the early 80's

  • Michelle sang it on a higher key, and she sang it quite nicely. I can't imagine anyone else singing "You Must Love Me" as brilliantly as Madonna though. I love both Madonna and Michelle. I think they should've done "Chicago" together! that would've been great!

  • Oh no! I mean, I love them both, but I can see them BOTH being Roxie lol!

  • Both Roxie LOL! yeah, they would fit the part. i can just imagine them in those skimpy costumes in Chicago, Yum!

  • oh HELLL NO! Madonna was the best choice for evita.

  • Well, I'm very happy that Madona got this role. Michelle isn't best siger. ;-)

  • I love Michelle more than just about anything, but I'm so happy she turned this role down...

  • Well, let me put it this way -- she's a better singer than me (and I'm awful).

  • Makes me appreciate Madonna so much more. She just has no power in her voice, Madonna brought that. And Madonna is far more seductive.
